To be honest, I'm not a very big fan of Guillermo Del Taco's movies. They're good, and there was a point where I liked them, but now they just don't really click. I'll see this because hey giant robots, but A) I don't have to like it and B) That inexplicable GlaDOS voice is the kind of lazy nerdlinger attracting tactic that make movies like this difficult for me to enjoy. I almost feel like he's stuffing this down my throat saying 'EH MANG YOU DON'T LIKE IT EH WELL HOW ABOUT YOU CHOKE ON IT PADRE'.

Fuck you Del Toro. You fat rapist.

Varrok 12-17-2012 11:33 AM

E: NVM

E2: I've watched Nightmare Before Christmas. I think it was my first experience with Tim Burton's movies. It was cool

MeechMunchie 12-17-2012 01:13 PM

Sekto Springs would probably want me to point out that Tim Burton only turned up for work twice while they were making that film.

Mr. Bungle 12-17-2012 01:14 PM

I agree with Mac. While the voice actor is quite good, in willing to bet that voice was being used simply to attract the hordes of slobbering Portal fanboys/nerds.

The movie itself looks decent, though.

Really? Huh, maybe that's why it's good.

He did it because he's a huge fan of Valve, apparently he rung up Gabe Newell to ask him. I see what you mean, though. That's why I will never ever go to see a film that has '3D' in the title, it's just a cheap marketing technique.

I've come to accept Del Gato as a purely visual director, like Zack Snyder. They both make beautiful films, but suck horse balls at writing original material. Del Guapo less so (Hellboy 2 had far more heart than SuckerPunch), and he does excel when he writes in the context of his native culture and in his native language. I'm pretty sure we already discussed Del Cholo's shortcomings in detail in the last "I have just seen" thread.

I'm really glad he didn't end up doing The Hobbit. The inconsistency in character direction and design would have really put me off my waffles.

I do appreciate his vehement loyalty to traditional special fx. However, I see nothing but CG in the Pacific Rim trailer. Shame.

You know me too well~

It's funny. Henry Selick's interpretation of Burton's style actually translated better than when Burton does it himself directly. Somehow, Henry Selick made that movie more "Burton" than I think even Burton could have. This contrast is evident in the stop-motion films he actually did direct (Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie) which come off more streamlined and sterile.

Mr. Bungle 12-17-2012 04:26 PM

Has anyone seen The Hobbit yet? My friend said it was the best movie he'd ever seen, but he hypes the fuck out of everything. I think it looks pretty good.

Sekto Springs 12-17-2012 04:33 PM

I haven't yet, but I really want to. I have seen at least a quarter of it in promotional material alone. It's the only movie I've been looking forward to all year, but even that isn't enough to get me into a theater on opening weekend. Especially considering the box office records it's already broken. I can't stand crowds, and crowded theaters are the worst.

I can tell you just based on what I have seen and heard that it's not as good as LOTR, and there's some moments that are pretty stupid. I'm sure in spite of any criticism I can muster, I'll enjoy the fuck out of it.

Mr. Bungle 12-17-2012 05:13 PM

I still haven't seen the last third-and-a-half of the original LOTR trilogy, they never really interested me that much. I'd like to see them but I just never had the opportunity. The Hobbit just looks like a fun movie to go see in the theaters while blazed out of your skull. Like I said, I'm not a huge LOTR nut, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it despite any stupid/"untrue tothe book" moments.

Plus Martin Freeman is awesome.

Sekto Springs 12-17-2012 05:25 PM

Anyone who knows a lick about filmmaking would know that if the LOTR movies were truly accurate to the source material, they'd be three times longer and significantly more boring. Granted, there are some things Jackson includes/omits that may have been in poor judgement, but I still find his adaptations thoroughly entertaining. I'm sure this will be true of The Hobbit as well.

You could actually attribute a large number of Jackson's decisions on how he shot the original trilogy to Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation from the 80's which - while ill-fated - did a great job of condensing and interpreting the material from the novels in a cinematic way. Jackson emulated Bakshi's version, which is evident in many of the shots, beat-for-beat.

Naturally, the Tolkien estate hates Jackson's adaptations because of his liberty-taking.

third-and-a-half

Isn't that just a half?

Yeah I guess so. I just didn't wanna go through writing that I had seen only 2/3rds of 2 and none of the third for some silly reason.

I'm also bad at math, but surely that much is apparent.

Crashpunk 12-18-2012 08:42 AM

Yeah I really NEED to see the Hobbit sometime, I'm a huge fan of the LOTR Trilogy and I have no doubt this is going to be amazing too.

Manco 12-18-2012 10:16 AM

I saw it, it was pretty good.

Definitely has a different tone than the LotR movies did, quite a few more humorous moments and generally more light-hearted. Which, if you’ve read The Hobbit, you’d know is perfectly okay, but if you’re only a fan of the LotR movies you may be disappointed.

It’s more action-y than the book, I will say that. I guess this is because a straight retelling of the book would be rather slow and dull without jazzing it up a bit, but it didn’t quite sit right with me.

I do like how meticulous they’re being though – because they’ve got three movies for a fairly short book, they get to spend a lot more time fleshing everything out and not cutting things for time.

OANST 12-18-2012 10:17 AM

Tom Bombadill Tom Bombadillo. He sat on a bug, and farted a pillow.

MeechMunchie 12-18-2012 02:03 PM

Also some shit about yellow boots.

OANST 12-18-2012 02:05 PM

And a hat.

Mac Sirloin 12-18-2012 04:22 PM

I want to see it because I like Martin Freeman. Unlike that talent less sack of crap Ian Mckellen, seriously that drowning rat should just stop riding Peter Jackson's coattails.

Vyrien 12-18-2012 04:24 PM

I liked Ian McKellen in Othello, I thought he suited his character really well.

Mr. Bungle 12-18-2012 04:25 PM

Martin's the man. He can even make bad movies semi-enjoyable (Hitchhikers Guide)

That movie was crap but he made it bearable.

MeechMunchie 12-19-2012 09:02 AM

His lovely crinkly face makes me smile.

I'd like to think the awesome Jim Henson puppets helped a bit too. Unfortunately, their best efforts with visual fx were still not enough to save it from the vacuous blackhole of fail that is Zooey Deschanel.

Mr. Bungle 12-19-2012 10:37 AM

I didn't even watch the whole movie, but the Vorgons did look exactly how I imagined them. I also liked Marvin's design.

Zooey can go suck a butthole, I don't get what people see in her.

She's the ultimate manic pixie dream girl for hipster farts. She only got to where she is on her looks and charisma, not unlike countless other female celebrities.

Wings of Fire 12-19-2012 11:09 AM

I watched the first two episodes of Arrested Development.

I'll be honest, I'm not crazy about it.

OANST 12-19-2012 11:18 AM

SEINFELD ISN'T FUNNY!

Wings of Fire 12-19-2012 11:44 AM

Seinfield is also fifteen years older.

Also I like Seinfield.

Mr. Bungle 12-19-2012 01:47 PM

Seinfled is fantastic, fuck the haters. Curb Your Enthusiasm is funnier, though.

And Arrested is a grower. Give it time. I didn't think it was amazing when I first started watching
