Abe worked as a floor waxer. Maybe if he saw what they actually did to the creatures his opinion would be different.

Was he exclusively a floor waxer his whole life? I figured slaves did whatever work was given to them, and Abe just happened to carve out a niche in floor waxing.

I'm sure he's given the floors of the main slaughterhouse a once-over. I'd be surprised if he hasn't witnessed some level of animal cruelty. Even so, for Abe to hoard a Meech would be like me hoarding a cow. Only the cow is a deadly, carnivorous maw of teeth that will kill me as soon as look at me and my superiors will grind me into slurry if they find out I have it. There doesn't seem to be an up-side.

I'm almost certain that he was quite aware of their technological process (slaughtering etc.) but still it didn't bother him. For Abe those creatures were no more than raw material for making food untill Bigface told him that RuptureFarms actually severely damaged local ecosystem.

Sekto Springs 11-18-2011 11:25 AM

That's kind of what I think. He's been working in that environment since birth. Cruelty and hardship are part of his day-to-day life. After so many years of seeing his friends being beaten and animals being slaughtered, it stands to reason he wouldn't bat an eye.

Admiral Zaarin 11-18-2011 11:36 AM

Oh, sorry, I've edited my previous post so the sence may have been disrupted.

I completely agree. And he had absolutely no time to think about ecological problems or something like that. Normally people don't think of "higher substances" while living (or more appropriately - surviving) in conditions like that.

Michael 11-20-2011 01:16 PM

These are all fair points! But even if Abe was accustomed to cruelty and consumerism, there would be nothing to suggest he didn't have enough sense to realise that the extinction of a race was a bad thing! He might have overheard glukkons talking about the 'last meech' in the same way he overhears the mudokon pops board meeting.

Whether his motives at the time would be in line with Abe's personalty as we know him now is unclear. Perhaps Abe's eyes were just naturally a little more open to morality than the others? It is clear from the games so far that most Industrialised Mudokons are complacent and passive. Considering his spiritual significance and destiny, I think it's more than plausible that Abe always had some form of altruism, despite his upbringing, able to understand concepts greater than what he was taught.

If Abe did hoard a meech somehow, if it was for the greater good of saving a species I think we can forgive the 'cruelty' of his actions!

Admiral Zaarin, bear in mind that Abe also 'thought he had a good job' when he was witnessing his fellow muds being beaten all the time, and no doubt being beaten himself! Perhaps he was speaking in terms of floor waxing being better than scrubbing meat grinders. It's definitely safer :p

Besides, keeping a pack animal like a Meech on its own in an enclosed space would be cruel.

I hope Abe isn't cruel.

Meeches are pack animals? How do we know that?

That is complicated. Video from AO said.

From here.

Q: I was wondering if you could add a web poll to your site? Also, what do (or did) Meeches look like?

Alf: I'll see what I can do about the web poll. I have personally never seen a Meech, either first hand or in photographs. Some say they looked like small hairy pancakes that left trails of sticky mucous on the ground. Legend has it that on any given day, one could witness swarms of Meeches squirming by the millions over the placid fields of Mudos.

EDIT: Also this and this.
EDIT EDIT: And this one too.

I should get paid for this.

For spending minutes - MINUTES, I SAY! - trawling through the oddworld.com archives and finding the various sources.

Glitch 11-21-2011 08:02 AM

If Nate is getting paid I want to get paid

Wil 11-21-2011 08:15 AM

You are getting paid.

MeechMunchie 11-21-2011 10:08 AM

Nate is paid in love.

In addition to his actual job.

Yes, that is true but it doesn't change the situation. Furthermore Abe wouldn't have risked his "good job" for saving some meeches. Abe definitely realized that if he weren't immediately shot upon being caught concealing livestock he would have the most dangerous and humiliating job possible in RuptureFarms which would most likely end up in a gruesome death far worse than just being shot.

Also I can't see how and where Abe could technically hide meeches. Meeches are wild predatory creatures after all. Besides he must have hidden a considerable number of them to be able to restore the population (several specimens hidden in RF without professional handling and overwatch == extinct).

Sekto Springs 11-21-2011 12:18 PM

People love Nate? Since when?

MeechMunchie 11-21-2011 12:24 PM

I'm so young and innocent I forgot that he was supposed to be the unpopular one.

I love everybody!

I just saw this on a youtube comment for the FeeCo depot song:

:

In Fee Co DepoT should be a announcer voice. Like - Incoming train from Bonewerks arriving at Terminal 24.

All SoulStorm Brewry train connections are delayed , PERMANENTLY.

TRAVEL ANNOUNCEMENTS? Good idea?

JennyGenesis 11-22-2011 02:40 PM

The voice for that would be a Slig I assume?

Sekto Springs 11-22-2011 03:34 PM

I actually really like that idea. It could be a slig, or perhaps Aslik himself before he's blown up.

STM 11-23-2011 07:56 AM

I dunno if it would work for Aslik because he's the Vice President of a huge company but I can imagine having a slig, hell, even a shrink announcing.

Yo Glitch? Huh, huh, how about it? Huh?

Sekto Springs 11-23-2011 09:20 AM

:

even a shrink announcing.
That makes even less sense than what I suggested. :p It would be like having your on-staff therapist giving the announcements. It's not their function. At least Aslik is qualified to do that job, but you're right, he'd likely get a grunt to do it.

STM 11-23-2011 09:33 AM

Ah yeh, I sometimes forget what shrinks are for....it's in the name...but never mind.

Crashpunk 11-24-2011 01:20 AM

I have some Ideas i was thinking off whilst playing Abe's Exoddus again.
When Abe is in the shadows and waiting for a Slig to walk past, He could step back into the wall, flat him self out and let the Slig walk past whist looking at the Slig's movement. A bit like Metal Gear Solid
http://www.ggsgamer.com/wp-content/u...ar-solid-1.jpg

Another idea was whispering. whilst there is a sleeping Slog or Slig, you could whisper to a fellow Mudokon to follow you then sneek off. The Whispering could be automatic when a Sleeping enemy is near.

That would defeat the purpose of many of the puzzles, which is to do things without alerting sligs.

LIJI 11-24-2011 07:37 AM

I've always assumed Sligs have a very good sense of hearing; since they instantly wake up only by the sound of your step, they'll probably also wake up from a whispering voice.

They could have used standard pre-recorded announcements made in Aslik's voice. That would be logical since Alsik paid so much attention to Public Relations.

I just saw this on a youtube comment for the FeeCo depot song:

TRAVEL ANNOUNCEMENTS? Good idea?

Hm, I dunno. To me FeeCo Depot always gave the impression that it was closed at the time Abe arrived there, in addition to locking all the gates. You could say it was a restriction of the engine, but no trains were ever departing until Abe unlocked the gates. No other creatures except security were ever there. Adding an announcer voice would take a lot of the atmosphere in Feeco Depot away I think. Especially if it's a slig it would become a cheap comical easter egg.

The announcer could kick in when Abe boards the train and the doors are closing. But not during gameplay, I think that would ruin the experience in that place.

Phylum 11-24-2011 11:40 PM

I think the place generally needs more ambient background noise, be it announcer or something else. It's a transport hub for fuck's sake.

STM 11-25-2011 05:30 AM

But then it might take a way from the simple music in the background. I love the FeeCo theme.

Admiral Zaarin 11-25-2011 09:23 AM

By the way how about adding train activity to some "action free" screens (like elevator screens in Bonewerkz terminal)? For example there's a screen with several locomotives parked in a "roundhouse depot" in the background. Showing one of these locs starting up (deisel sound, clouds of smoke etc.) could increase the immersion in depot atmosphere. Also it would be nice to add some ambient sounds like coupler clangs, distant deisel roar, shunting whistles. It's a railroad station afterall.

Sekto Springs 11-25-2011 10:54 AM

I second the Admiral's suggestions.

Mikaeel 11-25-2011 10:58 AM

Yea, I agree with that as well.

I read somewhere that when you remake a game from PS1 to PS3, you gotta rewrite a few of the designs cause their different consoles.

STM 11-25-2011 11:01 AM

I third that, that's a really amazing idea!

Crashpunk 11-25-2011 11:21 AM

TRAVEL ANNOUNCEMENTS? Good idea?

Why not having a quick annoucment after every door you've come out of, Like if you've just come back from Slig Barracks/Bonewerkz. Make them funny too.
