Believe it or not, 80% of it starts out as gameboy sounds. Then I put them into guitar pedals, then into a computer with more effects on it, then some layered guitar...

Yep. this genre, everyone hides behind layers of reverb. but hey, it sounds like music if you were to jump off of a cliff or go deep underwater.

I met Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel, last night. He stood next to me for about an hour at the Holiday Surprise Tour. I also got to see him perform last night, which is something he hasn't really done in about ten years. I also got to see Olivia Tremor Control, Circulatory System, Elf Power, Music Tapes, Nana Grizol, 63 Crayons, The Gerbils as well as Neutral Milk Hotel.

All of this was last night.

Edit: I forgot about Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't. They were there as well.

OANST 10-24-2008 07:26 AM

Are you telling me that none of you degenerates know who any of these people are? None of you have ever heard of Neutral Milk Hotel? The band that made what is considered by many to be the finest indie rock album ever?

I'm sorry, this deserved a double post. I'm very disappointed in you guys. You were all supposed to be awestruck.

Assholes.

Hobo 10-24-2008 07:56 AM

I've heard of NMH if that helps...

Well....That's a start.

Kimon 10-24-2008 11:06 AM

Neutral Milk Hotel is beyond excellent. But that's the only band in that lineup I know. I thought they broke up after the first album?

Ooh ooh! I know basically nobody here likes hip-hop, but I recent saw Cunninlynguists with Icon the Mic King and Substantial... it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. Icon did a freestlye on stage whilst blindfolded, and had people from the audience pass random shit up on stage, which he would then identify by feeling it and then incorporate into his freestyle... it was fucking amazing. SO GOOD

And even if none of you have heard of Cunninlynguists, some of you should at least appreciate the name.

Breaking up doesn't really come into it. Jeff Mangum was Neutral Milk Hotel. He just had some other people playing with him occasionally. He had a bit of a nervous breakdown after the second album, "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea". He then joined a traveling circus. Seriously. He really did.

Kimon 11-14-2008 10:51 AM

Fucking circuses. Circi. Ahem.

WELL, I can't remember if I posted this before, but does anybody else fucking love Gogol Bordello? I'm completely entranced. Seriously, punk has never been this appealing, it's the most fun, energetic, hysterically enjoyable shit to blast through your ears drums. AHHHH!!! I wish I were born in the Ukraine!

Also, I've been listening to Definitive Swim (Def Jux compilation album), including the likes of Aesop Rock, Cool Calm Pete, Cannibal Ox, and various others. Also, Tainted Love has been stuck in my head for a while...

SOMETIIIIMES I FEEL I'VE GOT TO

CLAP

RUN AWAY, I'VE GOT TO

GET AWAY FROM THE PAIN YOU DRIIVE INTO
THE HEART-UH ME!!!

Urhm. I was very amazed but... I thought the thread died and I felt it should be left in peace. In fact, you explained to me earlier the whole circus thing and whatever. Does anyone know why he freaked the fuck out?

Leto 11-14-2008 01:15 PM

I even figured out I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire so I can campfire guitar it to anyone who happens to be near me.

I love it.

My tastes in music are very strange. I admit it. But on my iPod, there's a mix of different music. But there is mostly classical on there. You know, Beethoven, Chopin, etc. There's some Scatman John on there. There's a whole album of Daft Punk on there (Discovery) while including Technolgoic, Robot Rock and Around the World. I've also got Madness on my iPod. But I listen to classical music on CDs mostly when I'm at home and not out and about.

Strangely enough, classical music seems to really relax my pet guinea pigs whenever I play it.

It seemed to have a lot to do with the pressures of touring.

I just got listening to Mr. Bungle's 'Disco Volante' again, and I have to say, it's starting to grow on me. Not as good as the self titled album, but that B52s parody (this one was great at a live performance I went to - Patton even had tights over his head to make him look bald) that's on the end of Carry Stress in the Jaw was great.

EDIT: For those who think I'm going mad, I still can't listen to 'The Bends', 'Playtpus' or 'After School Special' without turning off the stereo and wishing I'd never put it on. Or 'Desert Search for Techno Allah'. No matter how many good things people have to say about that one, it gives me headaches.

Black Moth Super Rainbow.

Holy shit.

OANST 12-08-2008 06:31 AM

M.I.A.'s new song has been driving me crazy. I can't get it out of my head.

Leto 12-08-2008 11:05 AM

M.I.A is a plague

M.I.A is a plague

A fucking interesting one, though. I don't know how I feel about it, to be honest. If I take a lot of what she says literally then I would have to dismiss her without question. However, I get the impression that she is more intelligent than you may first think. At any rate, it's a good time for pop music if you can call her pop. Much more interesting than the average shit.

Some, some, some-a some I murder. Some-a some I let go.

Facsimile 12-10-2008 06:29 PM

M.I.A sounds like children's music.

Anonyman! 12-10-2008 06:38 PM

Music for children or music by children?

Facsimile 12-11-2008 06:03 AM

For children. It's bizarre.

Leto 12-11-2008 01:01 PM

'$20 Dollar' is the only M.I.A I can I've kind of liked, but certainly not for the vocals

Anonyman! 12-11-2008 01:59 PM

I only like 'Paper Planes'. And only because it was on that Pineapple Express commercial, so my subconscious decided to attach PE to PP. Now I love the song. Fuck.
lol peepee

mitsur 01-04-2009 11:38 AM

Necro'd, although we probably need a new version.

Listening to a lot of Incubus lately. Otherwise some new bands I got is Minus the Bear, Mute Math, Shiny Toy Guns (only a few of their songs are to my liking [sp?], unfortunately) and some Police.

Go ahead and -rep for my blantant mainstream music taste.

P.S. New Killers album is mostly shit, imo.

Edit: BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM

fuck.

Facsimile 01-04-2009 05:38 PM

I've thought about getting into Incubus for a while, but they tend to just sound like a Faith No More rip-off to me a lot of the time. I still like them though, and with the crazy economy, I can't afford to import CDs anymore, so might have to look their way.

Hobo 01-08-2009 07:48 AM

I have got some tickets to see Porcupine Tree perform their new album in October. Get in.

OANST 01-08-2009 08:31 AM

I got the new Fleet Foxes album. Very beautiful.
