Wings of Fire 08-11-2014 07:23 AM

Even the second Hulk movie?

I'm sorry.

Holy Sock 08-11-2014 08:09 AM

Did anyone watch The Knick? Nothing particularly groundbreaking storywise but its rather tried and tested formulas were very well executed I think. Great anachronistic soundtrack, too.

Mr. Bungle 08-12-2014 07:13 AM

I wrote a big post about how I started watching X-Files then by internet fucked up.

Overall: good show, inconsistent (every episode so far is either amazing or kinda bland), with two great lead characters/actors.

Oh, and I'm on season 3.

MeechMunchie 08-12-2014 11:01 AM

I watched Sin City and it was sub-average.

I watched Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and it was fucking fantastic. Dreamworks original / Pixar sequel quality, with a charm of its own.

It gives adults something to laugh at not with cheap double-entendres, but by putting characters in situations that grown-ups find relatably awkward, but kids have yet to experience. Like a mild Curb Your Enthusiasm where every moment of tension is offset by a well-applied visual gag.

Job McYossie 08-12-2014 11:25 AM

I like it a lot too. It was just all around good. The squeal was pretty boring though.

OANST 08-12-2014 11:26 AM

I hate boring squeals. A squeal should be delightful.

STM 08-12-2014 03:02 PM

I've had some pretty great squeals I can tell you that.

Crashpunk 08-13-2014 01:48 PM

A nice squeal after a Cun't Spill...

Slog Bait 08-13-2014 04:04 PM

I caught up with Wilfred (US) and The Legend of Korra recently

I reeeeeeeally like the latest season of LoK. I'm not sure whether I like it more than ATLA or not, because on one hand the story telling has been all over the place in LoK and that can get kind of overwhelming at times trying to figure out everything that's going on, and obviously it doesn't handle pacing or character development nearly as well. On the other hand, there's so much going on and so much world building in such a short time I just want more. I love how the spirit world is no longer disconnected from everything else. That's one of those things that make me sit here like "IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES" while vigorously scribbling down shitty fanart of shit that would likely never occur in the show itself. The character development being all over the place makes certain characters that should just be side characters you don't think much about the most interesting characters in the show, while the main cast are kind of bland and not really worth noting.

Also, I think it's very interesting the dark turns this show has made. They've killed what, four characters now on camera in pretty "grim" ways? And most recently they had an air bender take a life by suffocating them. I know it gives the scenarios a heavier impact, but I wonder why they decided to do that.

As for Wilfred, series finale tonight. Not sure where this is going to end up, and not sure how I've felt about this last season. Sometimes it feels like they bench a little too much on the psychological aspect of everything and it just doesn't work.

Varrok 08-14-2014 08:36 AM

I've just watched Highlander for the first time. I really enjoyed it, though the film felt "too 80's" in the second half. 7+/10

OANST 08-14-2014 09:02 AM

Watch the sequel. Mannnnnn, it's so good!

Varrok 08-14-2014 09:14 AM

I'd much rather pretend that There can be only one Highlander movie

OANST 08-14-2014 09:21 AM

Highlander II is worth watching for one reason: It is by far, without a doubt, the worst sequel in the history of film. I had my mouth open in disbelief throughout pretty much the entire movie. Seriously. Watch it. It's hilarious.

Varrok 08-14-2014 09:23 AM

Is it like Munch?

OANST 08-14-2014 09:26 AM

You have no idea. It actually retcons the story to make them aliens, does an entire prologue to try to make that make sense, and then jumps 100 years into the future where they are attacked by alien immortals riding the hover boards from Back to the Future II. It's amazing.

Varrok 08-14-2014 09:36 AM

According to wiki it has a Director's Cut version which is reworked, with removed/added scenes and they removed all the reference that they're aliens now. This version is apparently known to be much better, to the point of being "passable".

I don't know which version to pick

OANST 08-14-2014 09:40 AM

Ohhh, go for the crazy, stupid alien version. I promise you that you'll enjoy it more.

Slog Bait 08-14-2014 09:40 AM

It sounds so beautiful

Watch them both at the exact same time.

E- I keep getting speedied today woe

Varrok 08-14-2014 09:42 AM

I'm really torn between those two choices. It'll take a while till I decide

Crashpunk 08-14-2014 03:41 PM

Just started watching Stargate SG1 after LITERALLY YEARS of wanting too. It was on a list along with countless other shows which I never bother watching but want too...

Farscape, Game of Thrones, Star Trek DS9, Breaking Bad...

Anyway, I've only see the first 2 episodes so far and I really like them. I liked the stories and the setting. The characters are also good and already memorable. And just the whole idea of a Stargate is really interesting. So yeah, liking it so far. I'll be sure to give Atlantis a watch too.

Mac Sirloin 08-14-2014 04:49 PM

Highlander II: Highlander

MeechMunchie 08-14-2014 08:42 PM

Highlanderer

He's a mythical hero who cheats on his wife.

Varrok 08-15-2014 12:47 AM

Also, the Quickening is the stupidest name ever

Slog Bait 08-15-2014 02:19 AM

I saw The Cat Returns.

It was cute and silly.

I liked it. That makes it the second Ghibli film I could genuinely get into and the only one that didn't bore me at any point.

Wings of Fire 08-15-2014 10:17 AM

I liked it every time Baron opened his mouth. Just thinking about it makes me want to binge watch The Princess Bride again.

....brb.

MeechMunchie 08-16-2014 05:59 PM

Small Apartments. It was one of those comedy films with loads of famous people in it that ended up being too weird for its own good. I really liked it, predictably enough.

"I'm afraid your landlord died in a house fire last night."
"Oh my God, is he okay?"
"Uh, no. He's dead."

Mac Sirloin 08-17-2014 11:54 AM

I marathoned season 5 of Adventure Time this weekend. I never misliked AT but I sort of avoided it for a few years because I felt I'd outgrown cartoons like that.

I was wrong, it's a great show. Some episodes can be snorefests, but it's consistent and there's a nice thrum of activity in the background; little plot threads always shifting and moving forward. I love The Lich; 'FALL'. Yikes.

Nate 08-17-2014 10:04 PM

There are some really good episodes in Season 5. The ending of Lemonhope Part 2 absolutely broke me to pieces.

Mr. Bungle 08-18-2014 11:18 AM

Need to catch up on AT, stopped somewhere in season 4 and I can't say why. Well, I did think the back story was getting a little convoluted but maybe I just got burnt and sick from how much I watched it last year.

Oh, and does anyone here watch Veep? Cause you should, the newest season is brilliant, might be the best TV I've watched all year. Absolutely hilarious and a little bit disturbing near the end. It's certainly starting to come into its own as a great mix of crude black comedy and political drama. So excited for season 4.

Varrok 08-21-2014 10:05 AM

So yeah, I got my hands on Highlander 2. I wanted to obtain the original theatrical release, but I fucked up and got the newer version without really knowing it. Sorry, OANST.

It... it was not horrible. But I understand that it was massively redone/resequenced/rethought. There were no aliens, "Zeist" word never comes up in my 2004 version. Instead the rebel battle was... in the distant past. And the punishment for Connor and Sean Connery was to be exiled... into the future! With immortality! Because why not! As you can see, the alternate version avoids a few retcons while keeping some others and making new ones, but I'm guessing it's still much better than the original. It's still stupid, but I can see it really tries to make sense now (which I guess wasn't the case in the original H2).

There's an (additional) scene where the main evil guy, Katana from the past looks at the tv showing the future footage of MacLeod being old but not yet dead from the natural causes. That makes Japanese-Sword-From-Before-Humanity very angry so he sends his two weird goons to kill him. I have an urge to demand an explanation of how this "time" works, but it'd be hypocritical of me to not follow it with a milion other questions about other plotholes.

I like the actors. In this version, the actor who plays MacLeod has some lines redone and he sounds extremely better than in the original H1. They got rid of the stupid accent, he sounds almost like a decent actor now. I noticed they cut many stupid lines from this version, like any unnecessary narration to make the movie a little better

Sean Connery is surely the highlight of the movie. He's sympathetic and his dialogue is fairly superior than of the other characters. It's almost like he improvised them.

Oh yeah, Sean Connery is alive after H1. Yeah, I know he died for good but he didn't really. You just have to call his name, silly, and he comes back alive.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don't find it stupid, my brain is already a bit damaged by the movie.

Oookay, maybe it was horrible. But it was enjoyable (I belive the original wasn't, as there were no improvements to make the movie enjoyable). The 2004 version actually looks nice. There's Doctor Cox from Scrubs here. He's a bad business guy. He's really entertaining to watch.

The ending is different. The girl and Connor don't fly to the different planet. Or even the past. They just are on earth and hapy end.

OANST 08-21-2014 10:09 AM

Yeah.... that's definitely not the version I saw.

Varrok 08-21-2014 10:25 AM

I'm currently reading about the version differences and the circumstances of making the movie. This is interesting:

:

In the renegade version, a documentary following the film has the filmmakers explain why the original theatrical release contradicted the first film. According to them, the inflation in Argentina had risen so high during filming that the film's insurance company started to take creative control, and made a film they thought would make the most money.

'Christopher Lambert' was so disgusted with the re-written script that he wanted to drop out of production, but due to contractual obligation he was forced to finish the film.

During the course of filming Christopher Lambert cut his finger to the bone in the first sword fighting scene and Michael Ironside dislodged his jaw in the dome fight.

The director disliked the theatrical cut so much, he left the premiere after only 15 minutes.
There are many things in original H2 script that make me believe the script made sense and would made a good movie if the Argentinian Insurance Company didn't mess it all up

Example:
:

The original script explained very clearly why Conner and Ramirez were immortal on Earth when they were sentenced.

JUDGE : I sentence you to exile from Zeist. You will be transported to the planet Earth. Each of you to a different time and place. There to be reborn. Once you have grown to the age you are now, time itself will take on a new meaning for you. One year on Earth is like one day on our planet. So on Earth you will be immortal. Furthermore, your memory of this planet and your lives here will be gone. Until the time of the Gathering. (Page 9 of the HIGHLANDER II script)
Retcon? Yes. But it explains why MacLeod and Sean Connery acted like they didn't know each other in the first movie. The second movie doesn't explain that at all.

Edit: Here's the original script:
http://www.joblo.com/arrow/highlander_2.pdf
It makes more sense than the movie.

OANST 08-21-2014 11:07 AM

It still seems bad, but certainly not the type of bad that it ended up being. Making the series more sci-fi like just seems like a bad decision all around. Weirdly enough, I think the television series captured the tone of the first movie best. I used to watch that show religiously when I was in high school.

Varrok 08-21-2014 11:11 AM

Yes, I understand that the sci-fi is a weird choice and I like the original direction much more. But whatever, I wasn't gonna take the sequel seriously. I'm just saying that they're not as stupid, impulsive, completely bullshit decisions as you would believe after watching the movie.

I'm not sure whether to watch other films and tv series.

Wings of Fire 08-21-2014 11:46 AM

Highlander is basically the perfect movie and I actually don't want to watch or read anything related to it because it's kind of my sacred cow.

Veep is amazing. I started watching it after each episode of Season 3 of GoT and quickly just started tuning in for Veep specifically. Dave Foley as the (swedish?) groping Diplomat was just hilarious.

Yeah, the Lemongrabs are without a doubt my favourite part of the show. They're just so off. Justin Roiland's amazingly shrill voice also makes pretty much anything they say stand out.

Oh, I can't stand the Lemongrabs, Lemonhope included. But that song and the visuals with it were really affecting.

OANST 08-22-2014 08:23 AM

I really recommend watching The Leftovers. The show is way beyond strange, but it's also very beautiful, and very sad. It's odd that it's as much fun to watch as it, seeing that the central theme of the show seems to be depression, despair, and loss. But it is. Every episode is fascinating, and it keeps getting better.

Holy Sock 09-03-2014 03:08 AM

Caught up with The Leftovers. I have to very much agree with OANST. I wasn't entirely sold after the first couple of episodes but I think it grows more confident as it goes along. And it's stand alone episodes are particularly strong.

OANST 09-03-2014 07:58 AM

Yeah, I loved the ones that centered on a single character. Those were great.
