Doctor Who broke your cousin's TV.

sue that cunt.

Jbot123 01-08-2014 06:19 PM

Getting into Doctor Who is my big 2014 goal. (I've got priorities) I've seen like half of the episode with the evil manequins, but I was pretty impressed. I intend to start watching the tv series and eventually go through the whole "expanded universe" shebang. But my question is, what am I getting myself into? Is there a huge continuity or is it usually just straight-up "Monster of the Week"? On top of that, if I DO watch the show, should I start from the beginning, or somewhere else? (I'll probably cave in and watch them all eventually, but as an introduction...) Also, are any of the sister series/comics/radio shows/whatever any good? I normally wouldn't ask so much, but I know how pleasing it is for a fan to introduce someone to their fandom.

Nepsotic 01-08-2014 08:49 PM

Well, you can either be in the fandom (a whovian) which might make you excessively annoying, because I haven't met a "Whovian" who isn't, or, you can just be a fan of the show like me and the others here. I am a big fan, but still not a whovian.

There's a massive story arc from series 5-7 but basically just start from the beginning. Netflix has all the new episodes except a couple, but when you get to those you can just download them.

There are audio dramas, and a lot of them are really really good. They're made by Big Finish and you should probably check them out. As for comics, they're fun, but only the classic ones. The comics about the new series are aimed at little kids. You should probably be able to find some of the classic comics in any good comic book shop. Over here, we have Forbidden Planet, which also has a tonne of awesome figures.

The classic series is tricky, just about 45% of Troughtons era are missing and probably won't be found again. Either way, you should definitely torrent some stories. The format's different. Usually each story is about 4-6 episodes long, in the later ones, anyway.

It's different, and similar at the same time. There's no need to watch them in order, though. Especially considering a lot are missing.

Start with the modern ones, either the series when it first came back with Eccleston or Tennant's first series.

Nepsotic 01-08-2014 10:02 PM

Why would you start with Tennant's?

MeechMunchie 01-08-2014 10:07 PM

I think "Christopher Eccleston should have got another series" is pretty much the only opinion I hold on Doctor Who.

Phylum 01-08-2014 10:25 PM

Because that might be what's easily available to him.

I prefer the Eccleston series to the first Tennant series. The series introduces a few recurring characters too, but you'll pick up the idea pretty quickly if you start with Tennant. Both are good places to start, regardless of quality.

Basically don't start halfway through a Doctor, or with Matt Smith.

Slog Bait 01-08-2014 10:32 PM

Jbot lives in the states, so if he has Netflix somehow some way he has series 1-6 readily available for instant streaming. If not, most of the instant stream websites that can be accessed in the US have series 1-current, including all of the specials.

I don't see a scenario where it would be more difficult for him to start with Eccleston unless he started with Eccleston and realized he just flat out did not enjoy Eccleston.

Phylum 01-08-2014 11:34 PM

My point is that starting with either would be fine.

There's no reason that it would be harder to start with Eccleston. I meant that if, for example, his friend has a heap of episodes starting with Tennant he wouldn't have to lose any sleep about missing the first new season.

MeechMunchie 01-08-2014 11:57 PM

I'd say start with Eccleston, since that's where the reboot began, and you can feel pretty much how the British public did at the time - not knowing quite what to expect.

He didn't want to do another one, he said he only wanted to get the series up on it's feet again, and after that he pretty much turned his back on the programme, which is fair enough, he didn't agree with the politics with the show. Or something.

STM 01-09-2014 08:05 AM

Shame though, he's a good actor, still my favourite of all then new ones. IMO the first season was best. Would have loved to see him do Season 2 as well.

Nepsotic 01-09-2014 09:00 AM

I think series 2 was the best, but I agree, he's a really underrated Doctor.

MA 01-09-2014 12:25 PM

i agree that it would have been cool to have Eccleston continue as the Doctor because that was the last time i enjoyed the series, but at the same time holy shit am i glad he didn't. he could see what was fucking coming. he's a great actor with many unique traits that could be utilised well and have been, but shitty-arse goddamn writing is shitty-arse goddamn writing.

Nepsotic 01-09-2014 12:27 PM

So he left 5 series' before it went downhill? He must be really good at predicting the far future.

MA 01-09-2014 12:29 PM

he's Doctor fucking Who duuuhhhhhh

STM 01-09-2014 12:58 PM

Season two was good. But damn I would have preferred Ecclescake combating the Cybermen than Tennant.

MA 01-09-2014 01:11 PM

i wasn't keen on Tennant to be honest. he was okay and i can understand how everyone loved him and all that shit but, whatever, i just wasn't keen.

Crashpunk 01-09-2014 01:18 PM

Ow my brain

I too am British so I watch Doctor Who otherwise I get the ol' chopping block.

Anywho, I watch Doctor Who for much of the same reasons already mentioned. I want to see if it manages to pull itself back out of the ditch it's dug, this coupled witht he fact I grew up with it is what keeps me watching.

My first memories of watching Doctor Who was the first episode of the reboot back in March 2005. My family had gone on holiday to a static-caravan/chalet park in Skegness at the same time, The episode aired whilst we were over there and though I could barely tell what was going on due to the scart lead making the TV black and white and the signal constantly cutting out, (Gotta love those old analog TV's) it was the start of a kind of family tradition where every Saturday is was on my mum, my brothers and I would gather round and watch it.

But yes, the writers should be hung for all the shit they pull.

Crashpunk 01-21-2014 09:26 AM

Just to piss OANST off. I thought I'll bring this thread back with showing you some of the worst action figures I've ever seen.

Varrok 01-21-2014 09:32 AM

Did it work?

OANST 01-21-2014 09:33 AM

I'm like so mad right now or something

Nepsotic 01-21-2014 09:47 AM

The Daleks are cool.

OANST 01-21-2014 09:53 AM

Yeah. R2D2 is pretty sweet.

Slog Bait 01-21-2014 10:10 AM

But R2D2 didn't even happen until 14 years after Daleks

THEY HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON

Daleks don't even have the luxury of having a tiny person pilot them

OANST 01-21-2014 10:15 AM

Oh, I don't care

Slog Bait 01-21-2014 10:17 AM

How do you not care about the lack of little people piloting a robotic shell

OANST 01-21-2014 10:36 AM

I'm a bad person.

I'm not sure whether a model of a Weeping Angel can really be called an "action figure".

Varrok 01-21-2014 10:15 PM

It's articulated, but moves only when you don't look at it.

STM 01-21-2014 10:45 PM

I'd just like to point out that those figures are bad enough to make a Strike Witch and a Kastere turn in their graves both at once.

Nepsotic 01-22-2014 07:47 AM

They're better than the super old ones. Like of the ninth Doctor. I don't think they're made by the same people, though. I just know that all figures of things without human faces (Cybermen, Daleks) are pretty good.

STM 01-22-2014 12:25 PM

Nep, c'mon man, they're dolls.

Wings of Fire 01-22-2014 01:01 PM

Toys are pretty serious business.

Slog Bait 01-22-2014 01:15 PM

Toys make the world go 'round

Nepsotic 01-22-2014 02:09 PM

I don't even care, I'm going to keep collecting Dalek figures and nobody can stop me!

Slog Bait 01-22-2014 02:15 PM

Not good enough

Build a Dalek army from scratch

I SHALL ASSIST YOU

MA 01-22-2014 07:18 PM

so will i. i'll drink and smoke in the corner and make unhelpful remarks about what you're doing, mainly consisting of "you don't want to do it like that", then i'll butt in and take over and fuck everything up.

i'll bring a chair, don't worry.

STM 01-22-2014 10:09 PM

Do you want one of my chairs or do you have your own now?
