Grid system rocks

Jordan 06-23-2013 01:32 PM

I'd be happy either way, but I'd prefer it if they got rid of the grid system. It seems sort of outdated and I reckon it would look odd with the game being properly 2.5d.

AvengingGibbons 06-23-2013 01:36 PM

Would you like to see more of those unique scenarios in the game, like the swinging boulders in paramonian temple rather than the typical regular use of the same old mines/electric fences/etc?

Edit: I've only just now looked at a scrab and thought 'hey, it looks like a crab' and afterwards realised that's probably why theyre called sCRABS.. im so slow...

To Jordan: Why would you think that? It's not like the grid is visible

The grid wouldn't have to be in your face for you to see it or feel it there. I'm cool either way it goes. It's still a 2D platformer (kind of) and that's all that really matters to me.

I worded it incorrectly. I meant it would feel out of place with how the game is looking. Because it's closer to being 3D than Abe's Oddysee was, I feel like it should retain the freedom of a 3D game by getting rid of the grid. It's a weak argument, but as I said I'm not fussed either way.

Manco 06-23-2013 02:22 PM

I think if there isn't some kind of grid system in place we might start to see some messy animation. A lot of things like Abe's jumping and ledge hanging rely on the grid system; if that goes then we'll probably see some "correction" in the animations.

Whether or not that will matter probably comes down to how noticeable it is. You can see a bit of this in action in the original Eurogamer announcement footage - when Abe hoists up onto the first ledge he shuffles back a bit.

I hope to fuck they don't bring back the fucking swinging spiky balls. Or at least make them less tedious.
Man, fuck those things. There were glitches where you get hit and they're nowhere near you. Plus, the bats make you panic and rush yourself.

Slog Bait 06-23-2013 04:38 PM

I love those spiky balls and hope there's an entirely new level dedicated to nothing but hopping swinging spiky ball gaps while simultaneously dodging bats.

STM 06-23-2013 05:26 PM

And falling rocks.

Nepsotic 06-23-2013 05:28 PM

The falling rocks don't bother me. At least they were fair.

Slog Bait 06-23-2013 05:34 PM

Falling rocks + swinging spiky ball + bat combo

DarkHoodness 06-23-2013 05:40 PM

I wonder if the guys who like to mod the old games over in OM&H ever tried making a level like that.

E: On topic, the spiky balls with the bats were only frustrating 'cause they were so damned glitchy. As a puzzle they'd have been challenging if all you had to do was observe a pattern and get your timing right, rather than getting unfairly shafted by a bug instead.

I sort of wonder what JAW will do with them in N'n'T, if they'll keep them in or replace them with a different mechanic.

This is a thread for discussing what was revealed at E3. Speculation and preferences about NnT should go in their own thread.

If someone finds the appropriate historical thread and revives it, I'll give them a posrep for enabling my laziness.

Vyrien 06-23-2013 11:30 PM

Do you mean the ideas thread?

Nate 06-24-2013 02:56 AM

That's the one. I've revived it.

leocrow 06-28-2013 10:45 AM

What's the point in reviving a 95 page thread? I would vote in making a new one if one is needed, overly long threads rarely help
