so a word you made up is acceptable but the names of alien races on startrek and doctor who aren't?

i don't think he was actually saying that was an acceptable word, he was using it to make a point that longer isn't always better. that's what he keeps telling me.

Phylum 01-27-2011 05:54 PM

If anything he wrote it with the intent of it not being taken as a word to prove that infinitely long combinations of Greek suffixes and prefixes are stupid.

MA 01-27-2011 05:56 PM

so there.

LDG519 01-27-2011 06:31 PM

fare enough but I don't think words from scifi shows should be excluded, I can understand excluding that supercallafradulisticexpialladochias (havent got a clue how to spell that) but klingon, vulcan, farangi, and dalek actually have meaning, but if you say there not acceptable then I shall not post any more names of species in sifi shows.

YOU HAVEN'T BEEN WATCHING YOUR MARY POPPINS HAVE YOU MATE

Phylum 01-27-2011 10:44 PM

Supercalafragulisticexpialedocious has a meaning, even though the sound of it may be quite atrocious.

EDIT: By which I mean "even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious."

YOU HAVEN'T BEEN WATCHING YOUR MARY POPPINS HAVE YOU MATE

I know it is a song in mary poppins but I thought it was just that and that it didn't mean anything.

That's correct. 10 points to Gryffindor.

It's something you say when you don't know what to say!

Phylum 01-27-2011 11:44 PM

Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay.

MeechMunchie 01-27-2011 11:58 PM

EDIT: Nah, not funny.

Dixanadu 01-28-2011 06:17 AM

If a red squiggly line underlines it in Microsoft Word...not a word. Dalek isn't a word, but...Vulcan and Klingon are. O_o

Nate 01-28-2011 03:39 PM

I think we should restrict this thread to words that are playable in Scrabble. Thus, proper nouns (whether fictional or not) are not allowed.

MW is GOD.

Nate 01-28-2011 10:11 PM

MW?

Dixanadu 01-29-2011 06:25 AM

Microsoft Word, brah.

Wings of Fire 01-29-2011 06:39 AM

It's MSWord, or if you're not a retard, Word. M is not an acceptable acronym for Microsoft.

I think we should stick to what nate said as I have been using the "add to dictionary" function for years so things that come up wrong on yours may not on mine, for example dalek doesn't have a squigly line under it in my one, also what about people with open office, nates way solves these problems

Elmatto753 01-29-2011 01:33 PM

Brilliant. Now I have to dig out my scrabble dictionary (4th edition I believe).

Mudokon_Master 01-29-2011 01:37 PM

I believe these are all real words.

MeechMunchie 01-30-2011 03:00 AM

Don't add them, then. Because they're not words and sound gay.

Nate 01-30-2011 04:33 PM

An interesting article about some of the options for the longest word. I agree with his reasons for rejecting several of the words, but strongly disagree with his final conclusion.

Also, I didn't know that 'honorificabilitudinitatibus' was made up by Shakespeare.

Dixanadu 01-30-2011 04:35 PM

Also, I didn't know that 'honorificabilitudinitatibus' was made up by Shakespear.

You'd be surprised to see exactly how many words he made up.

Not included in that list: eyeballs. Shakespeare invented the word "eyeballs".

MeechMunchie 01-31-2011 01:39 AM

You'd be surprised how often you're Quoting Shakespeare.

Ruffle & Dufflecoat.

Nate 01-31-2011 02:08 AM

I really, really wouldn't

What I am surprised, though, is that I've heard lots of people mention 'honorificabilitudinitatibus' in lists of ridiculously long words without explaining its history.

MeechMunchie 02-23-2011 04:28 AM

Juices.

Dixanadu 02-23-2011 04:33 AM

Cull.

MeechMunchie 02-23-2011 04:56 AM

Slaugherthouse & Abbatoir.

Dixanadu 02-23-2011 05:12 AM

Irrelevant.
