PotC3. I loved it. I agree with most about it being better than the second. Barbossa was my favorite character. I was disappointed about Davy Jones being Becket's bitch though.

I was expecting Barbossa being the Pirate King, since I thought Jack would vote for him. I liked the ending, it wouldn't seem right if Jack had just settled down on land or anything. If you stay after the credits then you get to find out that Will and Elizebeth make a child.

E'l Scrabino 05-31-2007 10:56 PM

I saw saw 3. I loved the angel trap, very well disigned methinks.

Saw PotC3 today. I must say, it was my favorite one so far. The first two felt a little disjointed at times (although they were still very enjoyable movies), but this one was very clear as far as plot direction and character motivations go.

You kidding? This was BY FAR the most obscure, complicated and all-over-the-place of the three films. Which is what it is generally getting slagged off for in reviews. But I didn't mind it one bit, it was obviously designed to be ridiculously complex.

Sort-of spoiler:

SO they've basically set up yet another PotC film, for Jack to go after the fountain of life/youth/whatever. How silly.

No more silly than any of the other plots to these films. Plus that would have strong thematic links to the rest of the series. I thought it would make a rather nice continuation, myself.

Dark Elite_H2 06-01-2007 01:50 PM

I recently saw Spidey 3, and to tell the truth...it was kind'a mind-twisting. Too many plots. 'fact, I don't even know if MJ loves Peter no more...

I respectfully disagree with you (and a bunch of reviews, apparently).

I don't know. As far as convoluted character motivations go, the first two just felt like train wrecks to me. Enjoyable train wrecks, but train wrecks none the less. All I know is that I asked "Why?" during PotC3 far less than I did during the first two. Meh.

EDIT: Holy crap! PotC3 got ripped to shreds in the reviews. What I don't understand is how these people hold the first two movies so highly while utterly hating the last. It's the same formula as the first two: pirates babbling on about intrigue and betrayal, only to be broken up by intermittent action sequences, and then a giant fight at the end. The writing in all three is overly-complicated, stilted, and corny, but it's at least enjoyable; you can't just say that one is worse than the other when they're all essentially the same.

If you ask me, most of the reviews out there are mistaking repetitiveness of the series' basic formula with flat-out bad spectacle. They're all spectacle; people are diluting themselves if they think otherwise. But, again, at least they've been enjoyable.

I just saw an anime movie called The Cat Returns. It was really good, and parts of it had me laughing out loud! It took a while to get used to the bipedal talking cats, though.... o.O;;

mitsur 06-02-2007 10:45 PM

Just saw PotC 3 as well.

SPOILER ALERT

I found the pirate election part funny, because they all voted for themselves, even when they said it. Even if the whole part was a bit stupid.

I also loved how everybody was backstabbing left and right. It was hard to keep track of who was screwing who, but eventually it came out in the end. I think Jerry Bruck was brilliant for letting Will be a bad guy, at least for awhile.

Another thing I liked was how they made Jack look more nuts than ever. The multiples made me groan at first, but it made me laugh eventually.

Jack's focus on getting his way was amazing. He was using everyone to achieve his own ends, but I think it was pretty smart of him to be able to plan everything.

Finally, I'm going to say this is better than numero dos, but not as good as number one. Great movie, entertaining, but the X factor just wasn't there.

8/10

END SPOILER

ANN NEELY 06-04-2007 10:45 AM

Last night I watched Batman Begins. It was awesome, even though I'm not a fan of Batman.

I keep hearing all sorts of good things about Pan's Labyrinth, so I guess I should keep an eye out for that one next. My parents saw Shrek 3 with my little sister yesterday (I am so sick of those movies, that I had no interest in seeing it). They said it was good.

Citizen Siege Fan 06-04-2007 11:19 AM

Shrek the Third

Has anyone gone to see Shrek the Third?

I see lots of people talking about Spider-man 3 and PotC 3, but not Shrek. This just has me baffled.
I work at a movie theater and depending how busy we are I can pretty well see how movies do, PotC3 was expected to be the biggest of the three movies, but it was surprisingly the lowest.

Also I was wondering if anyone knew if John H. Williams, CEO of Vanguard, produced Shrek the Third. I know he produced the first two, but I'm not so sure about this one. If anyone knows I'd appreciate such information.

Arxryl 06-04-2007 11:59 AM

Sorry CS Fan, but I haven' seen Shrek 3 yet. I want to, but haven't...

As for PotC3, I have seen it recently in theatres in Downtown Disney Anaheim California whilst on vacation.

I enjoyed the film, and it definitely had more of an actual ending than the second one. I also enjoyed the backstabs and the twists. The ending for the movie did kind of hint at yet another sequel, but it may also just be hinting that Jack won't be done being a pirate any time soon.
And the Disneyland ride reference in the middle of the movie was pretty interesting as well.

Overall rating: 9/10. Better than the second movie, and right up there with the first (tho' the original is the best if only a bit.)

Executive Producer, yes. And I have come to hate the Shrek films, but I very probably will be seeing this one regardless - just so I can bitch.

Rex Tirano 06-04-2007 12:45 PM

Shrek isn't out in the UK yet. But I will probably see it if people tell me it's good.

Loved the first. Hated the second.

And I have already gushed about this [I think] but Die Hard 4. Can't wait. :D July 4th! Wooh wooh! :D

Hmm. I liked the second Pirates more than any of the others.

But then, I do have a non-sexual barnacle fetish these days.

Daxter King 06-04-2007 04:39 PM

Oh, I saw Shrek The Third. It sucked, it really did. Maybe one good laugh through the entire movie. See Pirates 3 instead, mush funnier.

Venks 06-04-2007 05:38 PM

Shrek the Third could of been better, but it had very, I mean very, hilarious parts.

Doesn't mean much though; he also Executive Produced Happily N'Ever After, which was woeful. And, more importantly, actually made by Vanguard.

Fluid 06-06-2007 12:15 PM

just saw those two last american pie-s..... they suck.
all about stfler's cook.

Rex Tirano 06-07-2007 06:30 AM

I watched the fourth American Pie and it was so awful I turned it off. I never even bothered reading the back of the 5th DVD case. Pfft. Just crap.

Arxryl 06-07-2007 07:25 PM

it's a teen-semi-porn-movie, what do you expect?

Dracula’s Ex 06-08-2007 02:56 AM

Phah, I hate those types of movies. I also hate movies like saw; thats just sadistic crap. No plot what so ever. Waste of frigging time. 'Hide and seek' was alright, though I got confused 'bout what happened in it...

Kimon 06-08-2007 05:26 AM

Saw actually has a pretty intricate and involved plot.

Anyways, I saw PotC 3 as well. I thought it was a bit crappy and boring.

*Spoiler Warning*

Although I liked the scene when the British guy was walking down the stairs and his ship was exploding all around him from cannonball blasts. That was sweet.

That's exactly what sets it apart from Hostel, which is sadistic crap.

Nemo 06-10-2007 03:26 PM

I just watched The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, and lemme tell you, it deserves it's epic status as one of the best movies ever.

It had very good acting, very good effects, and an extremely awesome story.
Mix those three ingredients and let sit for half an hour, and you have a very good movie.

6-finger-fred 06-11-2007 12:50 PM

I just saw Hostel 2. It made me cringe once or twice but it is pretty much the same as the last one. Nothing but seeing a bunch of backpackers get mutilated.

Spoiler Alert!

The part where she cuts off the guys wang was kinda funny though. And the bubblegum gang is still really funny.

Mutual Friend 06-11-2007 03:51 PM

Oh my god, what a find! An HBO mini-series (I’d call it a drama serial, but whatever) from waaaaaay back: 2003. Angels in America. I only bought it cos I knew it had a great cast and was gay-related and was very cheap. And also that it was meant to be good, of course. It’s just an epic, epic piece of drama, incredibly intelligent (sometimes it goes to far and the fact this used to be a play sort of shows through), moving, political, theologically relevant. Fantastic stuff. Really, really brilliant. If you can get hold of it (through whatever means) then do so, cos it’s wonderful. Bit of a trek at 5 and a half hours long, but totally worth it.

Other Stuff:

The Third Man – really liked it, but wasn’t blown away by it. Not one of the greatest films of all time, which many consider it to be.

Hot Fuzz – came out on DVD today, and I snaffled a copy at Tescos (only a tenner!) during my lunch. Didn’t enjoy it as much, but then comedies are NEVER as funny as when you see them at the cinema. But it’s still a classy thing.

I agree, it didn't seem like it's own movie. All of that info could have been condensed into another 45 minutes in the second one, and the whirlpool part could have simply started with: "MAELSTROM!"

SPOILER

I mean really, Calypso? What the hell?! THEY CAN'T EVEN GET MYTHOLOGY RIGHT! DIDN'T THEY READ THE ODYSSEY?!?!

This might sound weird, but they're calling it 'live free or die hard' here in the U.S.

That's because movie producers wanted to rip off New Hampshire's phrase.

Yeah, I know. Yeesh, is Hollywood spiraling downward into originality, I mean in all honesty, everything is either a sequel or a spin-off these days.

EDIT:

I just found the poster for the new Batman Begins sequel on the WB website.
