Have you noticed the ∞ under the checkpoints?

Phylum 06-13-2014 08:00 AM

Having checkpoints as well as quicksave helps to get rid of the mentality that you need to quicksave after every step. Also, you could get stuck in situations from quicksaving and need to return to a checkpoint.

Anyone else ever manage those infinite death loops in AE? I wonder how/if they'll address that here.

Quicksaving face to face with a Slig out of a fear always got me. The restart path button was the bane of my life.

Scrabaniac 06-13-2014 08:08 AM

I used to regret quicksaving during a scrab/paramite chase and continuously running into walls and dying! Hopefully in certain situations, the quicksave option will be greyed out

V_O_T 06-13-2014 08:09 AM

I think the difficulties they are showing in all this gameplay is set to the easiest for demo purposes.

Although setting it to the hardest one would be hilarious for us to see and incredibly frustrating for the new players there lol.

If the check points had set numbers on how many times you could return to it, that would be a good way to give the new players a set amount of chances. And if they exceed the number, they get sent to the one before that one.

p.s. I dont regret my one panic quick save when I got really far and didnt know if i saved or not. The quick save was in mid air in the bone works. nothing but splats for 5 minutes as I thought i could chant my way out lol.

Getting seriously nostalgic from watching the gameplay footage. Seeing the Stockyards in real time was one thing but when that music kicked in I got so many feels!

Oh fuck yeah I have definitely done that in AE when I was onto the second disk.... Then having to start the game all over again "well with the level select cheat" ;)

I hadn't :) Interesting, I wonder how it'll work? That seems to suggest there'll be a limited number of respawns on harder difficulties, but then, couldn't you just quicksave when you get down to one remaining?

Lorne has said in one of the E3 interviews that 'game over' screens were never intended for Oddworld, that perseverance was what they wanted to reward. So what exactly would happen if you lose all checkpoint respawns? Back to the start of the path, maybe?

Very interested to find how these new mechanics work!

Scrabaniac 06-13-2014 09:22 AM

I'm just so excited to play this game! Its a shame we have to wait a month and 10 days to get it :/ I hope theres more gameplay footage to come.. Outside RuptureFarms would be a bonus! :)

STM 06-13-2014 10:09 AM

No one mentioned the sexy, sexy, retrofitted 70s-80s analogue feel to the directory yet! It's a beautiful fucking thing. It's like they had this base technology and rather than focus on processing power and a higher resolution they kept this blocky-pixelated feel when they upgraded it to a holographic type display. That's the Rupturefarms I wanted to see so I'm happy right now.

*Pats JAW on the back*

Varrok 06-13-2014 10:23 AM

I really like the new directory.

Oziah 06-13-2014 10:46 AM

Looking forward to seeing these 'new areas and levels' that Lorne mentions! Especially since he stresses that a number of areas have been created to give Elum a larger role.

Hopefully Paramonia will be a bit lengthier now! I always felt it was kind of short compared to Scrabania.

I really like the new directory.

I agree. It was a concept that needed refreshing. I tend to never interact with any of the story stones in the games anymore because I know them all so well, but I'll definitely be checking them out now to see how high tech they look!

SoulStorm64 06-13-2014 11:13 AM

A yes the new directory looks absolutely brilliant. It's nice to see that it is touched up. It makes me excited what Oddworld: twice the flavors directories will be like "if that's what it will be called"

STM 06-13-2014 11:15 AM

That's more like it guys.

Scrabaniac 06-13-2014 11:26 AM

I think Abe's Exoddus should definitely be called Oddworld: Twice Ze Flavour! if it gets the NnT treatment!

Manco 06-13-2014 11:29 AM

Oddworld: X-tra Bone or go home.

Varrok 06-13-2014 11:36 AM

Oddworld: Soulstorm Brew.

I DON'T CARE IF IT'S NOT CATCHY ENOUGH

STM 06-13-2014 12:23 PM

Oddworld: Not all That Witty in Game Reference

Holy Sock 06-13-2014 12:30 PM

Oddworld 2

Also, I'm loving Abe's "I don't know". Gets me every time.

SoulStorm64 06-13-2014 12:38 PM

Well seeing as how new and tasty was named. I'm sure twice Ze flavor will most likely be the name.

It would be awesome if they had a Glukkin voice submission for all the different gulls you posses.

Well, I haven't seen any blood yet, that's for sure.

You can see some blood when Abe gets shot here.Video.

Job McYossie 06-13-2014 01:51 PM

So if there are edits that are making Elum have a larger role, does this mean we might maybe, if all the planets align and my coffee doesn't spill, get some Elum action in a Exoddus remake?

Crashpunk 06-13-2014 02:49 PM

Elum in Exoddus is something I've wanted since I was a kid. I always imagined using him in Necrum and getting chased by a horde of Fleeches.

Holy Sock 06-13-2014 03:11 PM

One thing I'm really liking is how busy RuptureFarms is. I think it will make the contrast with the more peaceful native environments even better.

Scrabaniac 06-13-2014 03:31 PM

Yeah theres a ton of stuff going on at once, which gives you the urge to wanna get out of there. It also gives you a more relaxing feel once you reach the Monsaic Lines to explore more of the scenery and what Abe can do.

V_O_T 06-13-2014 04:13 PM

Abe's exoddus: Brewin' Bones

Yeah JAW, we are that hyped we have already started the name contest for the next one lol.

I can't wait to explore!

Also, guys, if it's not obvious enough from the footage, secret areas are now trap doors or hatches. Look for the hatches! Lol.
As if you didn't know where they were in the first place haha.

Holy Sock 06-13-2014 05:01 PM

I was rewatching the older gameplay from the 2012 build and I think that some of the quicker animations might simply be for better gameplay. Although some of the older animations (I don't know if being on a different engine is also a factor) look smoother I can see that the character movement would feel rather sluggish.

The only real way to keep the quick character responses would be to speed up some of the character animations for particular actions.

I could be wrong, and maybe they are changing some of these animations (we've harped on about it enough...) but I can totally understand why it might be more beneficial this way.

Scrabaniac 06-13-2014 05:35 PM

As long as the game runs smoothly, i won't have any issues :) Yeah there are a few issues to be dealt with, such as the glitchy Scrab that gets bigger for a split second, how their beaks go through walls and how they can kill Abe whilst facing away from him etc.. But i'm sure at the end of the day we will all be so hyped to play it, all the little things won't matter :)

You might be right, it does make sense why they would be so fast.

Also: the control scheme I noticed it's now X to jump up. I really hope the classic control scheme will be available. Trying to relearn the controls from what we are use to is going to be hard at first. ITS IMPRINTED INTO MY BRAIN!!!

Nate 06-13-2014 06:23 PM

It's hypothetically possible that the skippy animations might be due to 60FPS gameplay being recorded and uploaded at 24FPS. Perhaps it's smoother when you see it in person. Maybe.

Also, I don't know why people are suggesting new names for AE. The remakes should all be subtitled 'New 'n' Tasty' for the sake of consistency.

SoulStorm64 06-13-2014 09:13 PM

Personally I think that it would be kinda wierd if both games had the new n tasty slogan attached when the refence to the games story itself.

That would be like saying in 98 that Abe's exxodus should have been named Abe's oddysee 2 for consistency.

AlexFili 06-13-2014 11:20 PM

E3 overall has been good although it's annoying when developers leave ouy the PC. Seems like a bad way to do business. Let's not forgot when Oddworld jumped to Xbox and flopped back in the day. Oddworld-wise I enjoyed the trailer a lot, I was expecting remade cutscenes but not new ones like the Scrab cage part. I'd love to do a few videos of this on PC. Wouldn't mind getting it on Wii U either. I hope that there are plenty of sections where you can possess a Slig and explore a good portion of the map. Yelling at Slogs was always a lot of fun. Well done JAW!

In my mind, 'New 'n' Tasty' doesn't refer to one specific game, but is a label applied to all the remakes. Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee: New 'n' Tasty has that title because it's a newer and tastier version of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Not because it's a phrase that happened to be mentioned in that game.

Varrok 06-14-2014 12:55 AM

Yeah, because it can't be both.

Phylum 06-14-2014 01:11 AM

It's Oddworld: New n Tasty though, isn't it?

The game is always referred to as NnT, so either way it seems silly to have another game with that in the title now.

Crashpunk 06-14-2014 01:15 AM

Plus New N Tasty referrers to Mudokon Pops. So having AE New N Tasty won't sound right.

V_O_T 06-14-2014 01:56 AM

Oddworld Abes Exoddus: Newer n' Tastier.

MeechMunchie 06-14-2014 01:57 AM

Nate is silly.

V_O_T 06-14-2014 02:23 AM

Legit question here, will the WiiU version of the game contain things the other versions wont? Im referring to the rope crossing scene.
