But going back to Fluttershy, is there something wrong with her? Because she's 'sinisterly' quiet, and I've seen a few clips of her going mental.

Fluttershy is just very quiet and delicate, there's nothing "sinister" about her. She's generally very patient, but she has her limits. She's also a doormat, so it's safe to assume that she has a lot of pent up resentment that eventually boils to a head.

There's an episode in Season 2 that covers this, but I won't spoil it for you.

There's also a lot of fan speculation that she's secretly a huge slut, but that's a different conversation entirely.

I had this weird dream last night. It's a combination of this and the Abe HD threads. In the Abe HD thread, I was talking about Abe's scars and his ritual with BigFace.

So the dream (which starts in the middle of the action, as they do) has me in the middle of this Native American ritual thing. I'm being welcomed into their tribe for some reason or other. Bonfire, dancing, fluffy headresses, big starry sky, you know the sort of thing. The big chief guy comes up with a knife, and scores a line down each of my palms, then four vertical cuts along my bottom lip (probably a subconscious nod to Abe's stitches). The music rises, my hands are painted black with warpaint, and then lines of red, yellow and blue painted around my fingers. Then Big Chief Guy speaks, in a stereotypical, hoarse "Chief Injun" voice:

"And your name here shall be... RAINBOW SPARKLE."

Fuck me. What were you eating?

Yes and no. They're keeping her, but because of the uproar they're probably going to avoid giving her the spotlight entirely, which is unfortunate, because she's a fan favorite.

I’m fine with that; she works better as a side character who you have to be looking out for to notice.

That scene with her being prominent and getting a speaking role was almost cringeworthy. When a show starts trying too hard to make fan references is when things get awkward.

I don't see what the problem with fan service is. If it doesn't detract from the show itself, which I don't think it did, then what's the problem?

It’s a symptom of the creator being aware of and subsequently trying too hard to please the fanbase, which is often the point when the original charm gets lost in all the callbacks and shoutouts.

I like subtle stuff (like in the earlier episodes where Derpy can be seen in the background and suchlike), but when they go out of the way to put the character front and center with a speaking role, I get worried – especially when they rename her and then exaggerate her character for the role.
