I can see how different bits of these pictures fit together

I believe those are Mudokon IDs. On that picture I can see 110110BC (or BB), which appeared hidden on the first photo with all the morse and barcodes.

must be just me but I see a torso. All I see in these images are parts of the mudokon body.

So to clarify – are we now supposed to be stitching these images together into a single coherent picture?

Basically the red channel was shifted — not sure about GIMP, but generally you should move the red channel while keeping the green and blue channels in place. Alternatively, you can simply omit the red channel altogether by creating a greyscale image with a (0; 50%; 50%) channel mix, since the image is pretty close to greyscale anyway.
