EDIT: Also Nate's going to probably get over his relief at me having an interest that isn't overtly anime and start being mean again so if you want to talk about it more with me then please let's suffocate our ailing forum further of posts and take it to PMs. |
Once again it falls to me to point out that this is not a Phoenix Wright thread. It's the "What are you playing right now?" thread.
EDIT: Just saw the last paragraph of WoF's post. True. |
I'd appreciate a Phoenix Wright thread, but I'm thinking that not many of the OWF members have played it to keep the thread alive. It's a shame, really.

Skyrim is still absorbing my time as of now, And It will continue to do so once I get the DLC. I never bothered buying it cause I thought the full game was enough.
Nope. According to a friend, the DLC; particularly Dragonborn is fantastic. Other then that. I revisited Spyro 1 for my channel. I'm not a huge fan of the original Spyro honestly, I mean it's a great game and all, But I find the other 2 Spyro games on PS1 far superior. |
Yeah, it's been fun listening to you get mad at all the little things S1 did wrong.
|
:
Spyro 1 is a good speedgame though, same as 2 and 3. 1 isnt that glitch heavy as well, unlike its horridly broken sequels :D |
Yup. Crash 1 for it's not so great checkpoint system (Resets boxes if you die, no matter where you are in the level) and jumping mechanics and Ratchet 1 for the lack of strafe and rubbish double jump.
Although I will always have a special place in my heart for Crash 1. What with it being my first ever video game and all. Plus I always thought Crash 1 had the better level design, with some great platforming sections. (Great Gate, Road to Nowhere ect) |
I hated that you could fall from secret levels by going in Z axis in Crash 1. I hated that so much. I hated my imprecise gamepad analogs.
|
You can do that in all of the Crash games. It's never locked to a 2D plain.
|
That's not true. You can't go towards and away from the player in bonus levels in Crash 2 and 3. Seriously, try that. At least not in 3.
EDIT: Damn it. I called it "secret levels" before. Hope that wasn't the keyword in this conversation. |
No I knew you meant the bonus levels. I could of swore in any crash game, moving towards or away from the camera resulted you in falling. Perhaps it wasn't like that in every level I dunno.
You are however right about Crash 1. It was so frustating in the N. Brio and Cortex levels |

What I like about the original Spyro trilogy is they function so well as am example of iteration in game design. The first in the series establishes the series’ distinct core, and the sequels build on that with more depth and fun without taking away from the core. |
Oh I wasn't saying S1 was bad, I quite loved it. I was just saying watching CP rage at all the small things was funny. Well not really rage, but still funny regardless.
|
I wasn’t accusing anyone of disliking the game, just using CP’s criticism of it as an excuse to talk about Spyro. Because there’s never enough Spyro talk.

The thing that I hated in the First RnC: The lack of bolts. U get to the final boss, u get him to the final phase, u die. And the game doesnt give u ur bolts or ammo back. This is a staple in all the games in the series, but when it costs so much for ammo in that game, and theres no special bolts like in 2, where u can get bolts that are worth 1,5,10 etc. Like gems in spyro. When I got the HD collection. I played til Drek, lost, ran out of bolts, and quit the game and platinumed 2.
the platforming wasnt really a problem, but apart from the bolts, the checkpoints were worse than the checkpoints in jak 2. U could be set back up to 10 minutes with all the enemies respawned and with none of ur ammo. So yeah, Good starting point, but i absolutely can not go back to that game after playing the sequels. The crash bandicoot save system was a pain when i was a kid, but now I can finish the game in one sitting, so i dont have to worry about it. Also, Im all for a spyro discussion. Its my favourite speed game to watch. (I quoted wrong, and i cant copy paste a quote in, so this is mostly a response to post 337 by crash) |
RnC 1 did have different bolt values, it just lacked the denominations >50 that later games added. In terms of progression, it was pretty similar to the other two games, where everything is fairly straightforward to purchase except for the top-tier guns. I've never been in a situation where I've run out of bolts at the end of the game, either.
I understand Chris' complaint about the double-jump, but it's not really relevant once you get the heli-pack, and there's hardly any platforming before that. To be honest, I can't think of any really hard platforming in the first 3 games. The checkpoints in the second and third game were really bad too, just in a different way. There were too many checkpoints, which then had to be offset by the enemies dealing stupidly high amounts of damage to retain any challenge. It's especially bad in the second game. By the time you get to Snivelak you're basically forced to farm bolts for the best armor at the time. There's just no way to avoid all of the bullets that kill you in 2 hits. |
Never had a problem with the difficulty in the 2nd and 3rd game. yes u still died in a few hits, but that was the same in the original. Problem with the 1st game was u go back to the 2nd level and enemies hit u as hard as they do in the final level.
And strafing helps ALOT. I almost never take damage in the second and third games. The checkpoints were bad in the second and third games, but they had checkpoints. The first game they were literally non existant. I spent over an hour just trying to get past the main mission on the lightning planet. Cuz 15 minutes in u die and then ur all the way back to the beginning. 2 and 3 had much better checkpoints, u would only lose a few minutes, which is bad, but no where near as bad as the first game. |
I found ever single Ratchet and Clank game easy enough to beat apart from the first one. Ratchet 1 was surprising hard at times. The final boss was very challenging.

I never said the 2nd and 3rd games were hard. I said that the enemies dealt lots of damage. It's also worth mentioning that they generally move faster, and attack more frequently than in RnC 1. After the first game you have more health, more mobility (with strafing) and more checkpoints. The enemies gradually get less and less reasonable as the games go on, until you're forced to buy armor to sponge the bullets that will inevitably hit you. It's artificial difficulty, and it does nothing except pad out the experience - much like the lack of checkpoints in the first game.
Strafing actually broke a lot of the balance from RnC1 in my opinion. You could still dodge reliably in the first game, you just had to crouch-flip or do that thing with the thruster pack. Both of those slow you down significantly. You couldn't dodge while rushing forwards and attacking like you can in the other games. I really think the added mobility was a big part of the super-powered enemies you get in the later games. |

Crash and Spyro are game series of a type that I think don’t really get made any more: all-ages friendly, lots of charm and style, easy to finish but difficult to master. The industry as a whole has moved away from the platforming genre except for indie games, which use 2D platforms as vehicles for artsy-ness which is nice, but doesn’t scratch the same itch. Spyro in particular has a great sense of exploration of a fantastical world that most games nowadays skip out on. |
I loved the first three Spyro games. 100 percented all three of them. I never played any that were made after that because, and correct me if I'm wrong, the creators sold the franchise. I had no interest in it after that.
|
Not exactly. Insomniac were the creators of the franchise but they partnered with Sony to make the games. When they decided they wanted to move on to other projects Sony took the rights to the series and handed it off elsewhere.
You were right not to bother though, as none of the sequels ever really lived up to the original trilogy. Most of them outright sucked, and the few good ones were just good, not great. |
Yup. Identical to the Crash games, Only Crash had more better games after the original 3.
I remember liking the Spyro GBA games and parts of A Heroes Tail. Enter The Dragonfly could of been great too. If only they didn't rush it out for release. |
I never liked the Crash games. In fact, I hated them.
|
Yeah I know. But the comparison to Spyro is always there between them both.
|
Crash 1 had aged very badly ten years ago.
I still love 2 and 3 though. |
The first and second Spyro games are awesome. (3rd was also great but I didn't care for the multiple characters angle) I still love the first game the most because of the dialogues from saved dragons and the gnorcs who mooned you in the second world. I think I need to replay Spyro 1 right now actually.
|
Yay, all my favourite games are getting Discussed!
:
Whereas for Ratchet and jak, it was just Naughty dog and insomniac made the game and sony owned them, no third wheel. The only PS2 spyro game I really liked was Dawn of the Dragon, the final one before Skylanders. Has anyone seen a speedrun of Enter the Dragonfly? If u havnt, I highly reccomend it. The speedrun lasts about 2 minutes, thats how broken that game is. |
You guys are trolling me, right?
|
isn't this like the third topic in a row to be talked about enough to validate it's own thread?
I started playing Smite with my brother, quite a lot of fun, and my brother knows so much about each god it's fun to hear him tell stories about each one. We both are pretty bad, though I'll admit he is considerably more skilled than I. |
