people are seriously arguing about colour choices for a logo
as if it's gonna ruin the game are you fucking kidding me? |
You're starting to see where I'm coming from, I think.

Personally what I'd do is gradient the neck into the sawblade. However there's there's two problems with that, One is that the blacks will mix with the 3D of the letters, and the other is that it's kind of an industrial logo that is easy to stamp- gradients don't work well with those.

Further edit, colors now kind of match the RF logo from AO intro:

The neck's still a little too fat, but apart from that it's geniunly a lot better imo.
|
Ah yes, piss yellow and gradients. Exactly what was missing.
|
MM's one is much better. As Manco said, a piss coloured glukkon doesn't sit right.
|
I can see why they chose the colours they chose it just doesn't work as well as they were probably hoping.
|
Piss Glukkon is better than purple Glukkon.
|
They obviously want to distinguish it from the original. You know, like advertising.
|
Because the remake of the game, that was supposed to be close to original, just can't look similar to the original
|
Jesus you people need to get out more.

I feel semi justified for being nitpicky with logos because graphic design is one of the things I do on occasion for money.
I will now proceed to be so picky its obnoxious to even myself. So, I was trying to figure out why the logo felt so off and of course the biggest thing is the colour choice, but christ look at these tangents: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/60726531/thing.png It flattens the heck out of the image and that's part of the reason the glukkon head looks so strange along with the elongated neck. None of the logos we've seen with the glukkon head thus far had the mouth tangent, nor did it have the elongated neck, which is usually cropped off around where the collar of their clothes would start. Then there's the colours. The purple is really more of a blue and it's meant to compliment the orange lining New 'n' Tasty, but the blue is too purple and the orange is not yellow enough for it to get that nice complimentary look. The lettering is fine, we've already established, but the way it's set it up it literally looks like three individual pieces stacked on top of each other sloppily. Too much clutter. I wonder why they went with orange and blue instead of yellow and purple. Also, while this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it doesn't pop very much because there's not that much contrast. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../greyscale.png That mouth is bothering me so much |
i'm honestly dreading new footage of this game because already people are nitpicking over something so small.
the actual logo is fine as it is, apart from some small details which can be ignored. |
Yeah, why make something close to being perfect, when we have something average/good already?
|
I personally love it when products could be a lot better but fans are too far up the companies asses to say things could be improved. Really makes me feel like I'm going to be getting my moneys worth.
|
Urine yellow and gradients aren't the answer, the colours do look a bit muted but that doesn't bother me too much.
Slog Bait is right, the glukkon in particular looks lazy, I mean, look at the ear-slit, the artist hasn't blocked it in properly. I don't know if that was intentional or not but to me it seems they missed a few pixels, which isn't a good look. To be honest I'm not too bothered about the logo, seeing as I'll be buying the game for, well, the game. But if you're going to do something it should be done right otherwise what's the point? |
I’ll put an imaginary dollar that the logo was thrown together by a JAW staffer (who isn’t a graphic designer by trade) in a rush the week before E3 because they needed something to put onscreen at Sony’s event.
Slog Bait makes perfectly valid points (except for the Glukkon mouths which have always been like that), but I really don’t feel like this is something worth getting pissy over. |

The fact is though, everything I've seen has just made me go, well that's pretty bad, or this could be done, correctly identified as small things, but small things that would make a surprisingly big difference, and people slate me for pointing them out. I think it's odd to say forgive JAW because they're small and they can't do an overly great job, in that case, they shouldn't be trying to recreate such a monumental game. To be honest I'd rather they just left it alone than release something shoddy for funding. Also, I wouldn't say a logo is a 'minor detail'. It's something that a prospective buyer will use to determine whether they want to purchase the game, and I personally feel it doesn't reflect the atmosphere and gameplay all that well, and that's largely down to the choice of colours. |
If they can't deal with criticism then they shouldn't be the ones making the game. After all, if the finished product is mediocre or bad then what's the fucking point?
I mean, look at the Silent Hill HD Collection. That isn't even a full remake, but look how bad it turned out. Some fans said something pre-release, but most didn't and just carried on licking Konami and Tomm Hulettes arse. The fans didn't say anything, the playtesters didn't say anything, and then it shipped that way. Is that really what you want for Oddworld? Edit: Connel is a speedy shit, but his points are dead-on. It's basically what I'm saying but in more detail. |
Nep, that implies that you're not at all happy with what JAW have shown so far. Do you really think their work is that terrible, and is comparable to low quality remakes?
Many of the people working at JAW are fans of the game, too - They'll try their best to make the remake as good as they can, depending on their limitations. Jordan is right. I mean personally I'm happy this is happening at all - What's been shown so far looks pretty damned good despite the lack of polish. And I'm not licking anyone's arse - As a long-term fan of a game which, for me, is of huge significance, I genuinely do like what's been shown so far. Yes, I do have a few niggles about some of the new content - Yes, I'm not 100% happy with what's been shown, but many of my concerns are because it hasn't been polished yet, and I don't feel it's really fair of me to voice them. Overall, it's a lot better than what I was hoping for, anyway. Yeah I also understand that many people here really care for the franchise, but perhaps some of your expectations are too high. Sure, people can give creative criticism here, but it's up to JAW's discretion whether they read it and take it on board or not. /tipsy ramblings E: People are also forgetting that the original game isn't going anywhere. Yeah, many of you may consider it to be a wasted opportunity if JAW can't get the remake "right" in your opinion, but who else would want to do this? And do some of you really think their work is that terrible? |
This forum better not turn into an Oddworld version of No Mutants Allowed.

Again, though, I'm not saying the end product will be bad, I'm thinking of the consequences and how to stop them from happening. I still have faith in JAW, but just because they're fans doesn't give them the right to fuck up and get away with it (Tomm Hulett). |
:
In the end I don't give a flying fuck about the logo. It was the conversations focus at the time so I figured I'd pick it apart. Still looking forward to the game. |
This is a forum afterall, we need this kind fo shit to discuss!
What do you guys think of the way the mines are now laid out in one of the first few screens of the game? Theyre in a tidy line like in the original, instead of in that messy pile like we saw months ago in another preview. Do you like that they were breaking the 'grid system' and opening up the posibilty to a more varied, unpredictable gameplay expierience, or would you like the grid system to remain in place in New 'n' Tasty? |
