I'm going to merge this with Music MK3. Carry on.

What ambient or dubstep do you listen to?

Dubstep is indeed taking its first baby-steps right now, but its interesting to see how much potential it carries, especially with the great amount of new artists that have appeared recently. Even here, I can be picky, because I don't want it to sound too influential - I want originality. There's a few artists who can accomplish that; Kromestar, Skream, Jme, Geoim, Blackdown, Burial, Kode 9, Darqwan, just to name a few.

Ambience-wise, I pretty much grew up with Aphex Twin, albeit he ranges from a wide array of genres, only a few of his albums can be considered ambience. Most would fall under ambient techno, I guess. There's Moby too, with some of his earliest albums, still love them. A few years back I discovered Susumu Yokota, which sort of blew me away for the remainder of the year. Having dug up his earliest albums a few months ago, I was able to truly appreciate his music. He's pretty damn good!

Classical: I have the entire Fantasia soundtrack which I frequently listen to <3 I'll also listen to any and all Disney soundtracks, why? Because I rawk.

Do you have 2000? There's some good stuff in that one too. If you liked the Rite of Spring or the Sorceror's Apprentice then I think you'd like 2000.

So we're categorizing all of our musical tastes, oh how fun!

Classical: I think I actually to more classical than I do rock or any other contemporary style, so to give classical some leverage, I'm going to sub-categorize it.

Baroque: I've grown to like J.S. Bach over the years with the pieces my piano teacher has me learning. Most kids I talk to say they hate baroque music, but you can't argue with the shear goodness of the counterpoint in it. Not many composers can produce it.

Romantic: I definately likes me some Brahms, Grieg, and Liszt. Pier Gynt and the Brahms Violin Concerto are definately two of my favorite works.

French Impressionism: Ravel. One of my all time favorite composers. If I ever become famous and have a funeral, I want the Adagio Assai from his Piano Concerto in G to be played live at it. I like some Debussy every now and then, but I've never actually sat down and listened to him.

Other Early Twentieth Century: Stravinsky. Nuff said. The Pines of Rome is another one of my favorite works, so I guess Respighi desrves to be mentioned. Gershwin is also good. Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris are brilliant. Jazz-Orchestra fusion is simply beautiful.

Modernism: Charles Ives is another one of my favorite composers. I love listening to both his conventional and non-conventional pieces. John Cage is good too. The prepared piano is one of the coolest instruments, if it deserves to be called that, in my book. I also like the atmosphere of Terry Riley's music.

Contemporary: I've grown to like Eric Whitacre, though I detest most composers that I perform in school or for some dumb festival. Philip Glass is pretty sweet too. I also like the atmosphere of Terry Riley's music.

----------------

Indie/Folk/Blues-ish: Sparklehorse. I love how somber his music is. The White Stripes are up there. Feist and Joni Mitchell are my rock heroines, though I'm not sure if Mitchell falls into the indie category. I love their voices.

Techno: Daft Punk. They kind of remind of Philip Glass with the repetetive, atmospheric nature of their music. The Gorillaz are also amazing. It's a shame to seem them go down, though. Can't say D-Sides did it for me.

Other: Stevie Wonder. Amazing musician. I always thought his song Mistra Knowitall should have been used the show The Riches. I'ver been wanting to get into Smashing Pumpkins. Opinions?

Sorry if the second block lacks description. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to the polytheism of rock music, and Wikipedia is no good. If someone could do me the pleasure of correcting anything I've listed, please make note of it.

abe is now! 05-18-2008 07:12 AM

Does anyone know why American Idiot (the song) has got two censored wors (fuck and faggot)? I'm not American... why did they cenosred them?

I'm sorry Kimon I might be the only one who gets an Atmosphere reference :(

Unfortunate but true. Anyways, I'm big on that album right now.

A couple of days ago, I bought three albums: Labor Days by Aesop Rock, Sketches of Spain by Miles Davis, and some Minus the Bear album.

Labor Days is an excellent record. The 5th track is about a little girl who's an artist drawing on the sidewalk, and it progresses through her life until she dies. Most excellent. Same with 9-5er's Anthem. The Minus the Bear album was mediocre, totally not what I was expecting though. I'll give it a few more listens and see how I feel.

I have yet to listen to Sketches of Spain, but I'm apprehensive because as of yet I haven't sat down and given a serious listen to jazz, so I'm scared that I'll despise it, or worse, get bored of it really quickly. We'll see how things go.

Leto, concerning chiptune. I haven't delved into it yet, but have you heard of Crystal Castles? My friends really into their shit, so I'll most likely be checking it out soon.

Leto 05-18-2008 09:55 PM

Google Crystal Castles, they're theiving little shits. :( do a google about them sampling other chiptunes. What I do reccomend is Bit Shifter, Sabrepulse, Animal Style, DJ Scotch Egg (heavier glitchy stuff), Seal Of Approval (has vocals), The Depreciation Guild (also has vocals), Kplecraft. there's so many, I'm just scratching the surface.

yeah, and Minus the Bear, they're like indieful boring postrock. depending what you like about them (the small amount that you did), there are several other places to go with that one

As a lot of people have said before, Burial, although pretty fucking decent, is not really dubstep at all, but like garage 90s grime etcetc, it's just been embraced by the dubstep scene. I don't really see the originality of the genre. People are raving about it being something completely new, never anything like it before, but it just doesn't sound earthshatteringly new to me. Got a Kode9 and the Spaceman (or space ape, can't remember), and it was shocking. Never was too keen on Skream. With Dubstep it's extremely hit and miss for me. I don't like a lot of it, and er go, it must be mixed with other things to keep my attention. Myrkur is doing some amazing things, check him out and pimp him to all dubsteppers you know. [And blackfilm, in fact I edited it just to include this band: http://www.myspace.com/blackfilmmusic
Very atmospheric ambient kind of dubstep.]

Get further into Ambient. there's so much more wonderful music in the genre and you haven't even scratched the surface yet :)

:

I'ver been wanting to get into Smashing Pumpkins.
to me The Smashing Pumpkins is a big popular doppleganger of every other band the member's liked. though everyone reccomends Siamese Dream I think it's called. What I'd reccomend to counter it is Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, give that a whirl.

Also from the bulk of your post, some modernist/contemporary I dont know what the fucksits I would reccomend to you: Eric Satie, the album Druqks by Aphex Twin (when it isn't superelectronica, it's beautiful prepared piano pieces; and Max Richter.

used:) 05-19-2008 01:38 PM

I know of Satie. I haven't listened to him that much, but the little I've heard, I've liked. Is he in that whole minimalist group?

Anonyman! 05-19-2008 02:08 PM

Aphex Twin is the god of brick shitting awesomeness.

used:) 05-19-2008 02:14 PM

The jazz trio Bad Plus did a cover of his song "Flim." I thought it was excellent. Beautiful melodies.

Holy cow, listen to him. Adore him, worship him. You'll have a hard time finding anything even remotely as amazing as Satie's music. I've been listening to his music since 9th grade, I think - it has always been inspirational and spot on every time I've felt discouraged about things.

used:) 05-19-2008 02:50 PM

Okay, rethought. I HAVE heard his music more than I thought. The piece Gymnopedie is one of my absolute favorites out there and I'm beating myself over the head for not remembering it before. I thinking about ordering it to play at my school's recital next year.

With that in mind, I shall set out to Rhapsody and use up my 25 free plays for this month on him.

It was great in the melody department, but man, the percussion was not up to Mr. James's very high standard. :/ It feels wrong after listening to the original for many years. At least it's nowhere near as completely detestable as the Dillinger Escape Plan's cover of Come To Daddy is. It's cringeworthingly bad.

I liked the percussion in the bad+'s cover. I don;t know what you call the certain noises they made, but I thought they went really well with the other music.

New Sigur Ros!

http://yousai.co.uk/gobbledigook.mp3

Sounds like a mashup between the band and possibley The Lion King soundtrack. Check it out, very different to what they have done previously.

A few years ago, post-rock was the music of the future. With bands such as Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Icelandic heavyweight Sigur Ros leading the scene, it seemed like lengthy, crescendoing guitar instrumentals would be the soundtrack of choice for catharsis-seeking teens and meditative filmmakers alike well into the new millennium. But with an exception or two — Explosions in the Sky’s score for “Friday Night Lights” and the continued success of Sigur Ros’ pro-vocal, pro-glacier epics — the post-rock bubble has long since burst.
As one of the few bands to ascend beyond the genre’s aesthetic and commercial boundaries, it’s no surprise that Sigur Ros’ latest single breaks new ground. Or rather, old ground. The appropriately titled “Gobbledigook” (Icelandic for “Gobbledigook”), which the band released for free on its website today along with an NSFW video, steps away from the band’s usual iciness in favor of an acoustic campfire vibe, all click-clacking, double-time drumming and frantic guitar strums. It’s the sort of rough, tribal music that’s helped nature-centric bands such as Animal Collective and the Dodos replace post-rock as the outsider sound of choice but Sigur Ros are hardly copycats.
Unlike Animal Collective’s lo-fi romps, “Gobbledigook” maintains the band’s usual pristine production, letting singer Jónsi Birgisson bounce over a bed of high-pitched harmonies. His melody is both catchy and high-flying, avoiding the aforementioned bands’ frequent problem of burying their singers. It does the group good to add a little energy to the mix: the song clocks in at a scant three minutes, which is barely enough for an intro in typical Sigur Ros time. Older fans might find it dizzying but for a band once willing to repeat itself ad infinitum (or at least for eight-minute intervals), it’s a breath of fresh air. The band’s fifth album, “Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust,” is due June 23. More of this, please.

Does anyone here listen to Dave Brubeck?
I loved his cover of 'Blue Moon'.

Leto 05-30-2008 01:15 AM

And Then

Like if Regina Spektor was good. Sorry internet, I just never got the love.

Mac Sirloin 05-30-2008 04:25 AM

I just downloaded the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater OST. Good stuff.

ParasiteSklent 06-03-2008 09:45 AM

This thread seems to be all over the place, but on the topic of favorite genres, I like most types of rock music. Also, techno and classical, though I don't listen to it very often. Favorite bands right now are Coheed and Cambria (love the singer's voice, even if everyone else hates it), Rammstein (I have a thing for German music), 10 Years (same reason as Coheed), Mindless Self Indulgence (just because), and Turmion Kätilöt (industrial metal from Finland is amazing.)

Rammstein (I have a thing for German music),
You heard of a band called Subway to Sally? They're very much like Rammstein but I rate them higher.

ParasiteSklent 06-03-2008 09:51 AM

No, never heard of them. Anything that sounds remotely like Rammstein will most likely appeal to me, so...away, to Wikipedia!

Anyone enjoy anime music? I've been digging the Seatbelts, the band that performed the soundtrack for Cowboy Bebop. I love the song "Blue."

ParasiteSklent 06-03-2008 03:57 PM

I listen to anime music once in a while...usually from Fullmetal Alchemist or Death Note. So mainstream. I'm lame like that.

used:) 06-03-2008 04:06 PM

It's not lame. FMA and Death Note have really nice music. Excluding some of the intro and outro songs (sorry if that's what you listen to). Death Note's aren't that bad. I can't stand FMA's intro songs.

ParasiteSklent 06-03-2008 04:07 PM

Yeah, the actual music in both the shows are better than the intros/outros. I can't STAND the first intro from FMA. It drives me crazy.

Hobo 06-03-2008 04:11 PM

As far as anime goes I've only started watching death note today. The intro and outro make me want to kill people. The other music is nice though.

The intro and outro make me want to kill people.

I felt the exact same way when I saw the second opening for the first time. The fact that I was wearing headphones didn't help. I almost tore my hair out.

used:) 06-03-2008 04:57 PM

The second outro reminds me of an episode of South Park. Random words in English just going off in a cloud of Japanese.

absolutely amazing band.

Leto 06-27-2008 03:28 PM

Bumping for heeeyulp. Does anyone live in Sydney/would be willing to send me in the right direction for a show? I may be going to a Sigur Ros gig on the 2nd of August, but the main problem is I'll be in a land where I've never been before, with no sense of direction bar a shitty map.

Kimon 07-15-2008 02:29 PM

So sorry to bring bad vibes into the music thread, but what the fuck is so great about Tha Carter III? Lil' Wayne probably has the biggest lack of flow out of any rapper I've ever heard, and his voice sounds like shit. I don't get if that's part of the appeal or what... his wordplay is pretty good for a mainstream rapper, but that doesn't make him Jay-Z or 'Pac, not even close.

Basically I don't understand the hype at all.

EDIT: Actually I just listened to Dr. Carter and that's a cool song. He's got a pretty personal delivery and suchlike. Still... not quite the savior of Hip-Hop.
