I really can't recommend the PC version enough, though. It'll run on anything, and if you didn't play it when it was new, you'll need a good few mods to make it acceptable to your spoilt Skyrim eyes.
Here, look for comparision:
Unmodded:

and here how modded could look like:

I don't necessarily approve of complete retextures - they usually lose the original character, which was perfect. Just try and find some high-res versions of the normal texures, and some higher-poly models.

Disgruntled Intern 03-30-2012 07:55 AM

Lots of ME3 multiplayer. Lots. I haven't even really touched the campaign because I don't really want to see the end of the series [not because of all of the bullshit complaints about the ending], so I've just been leveling, promoting, and re-leveling various multiplayer classes and characters.

My only real gripe with the multiplayer is the lack of level based matchmaking. It irks the shit out of me when I go for a gold/silver challenge, and everyone in the lobby is level 18-20...Until the last second when someone switches to their level 1 character for the quick XP and bigger credit payout. Not only because it makes clearing all 11 waves that much harder, but because I spend the majority of my time reviving them.

Other than that I really like the way the different classes and their abilities can compliment each other and pull off some pretty crazy AOE group kills. It's good times in general.

OANST 03-30-2012 08:03 AM

I haven't even touched the multiplayer. Maybe I should.

Disgruntled Intern 03-30-2012 09:02 AM

If you decide to try it out, let me know and we'll play. I'd rather play with someone I sort of know than whiney shrieking 13 year olds.

OANST 03-30-2012 09:16 AM

Also, I figured out why I couldn't stay in cover. The controller I use sticks just the tiniest bit, and won't let the analog stick return to true center. This was never a problem for other cover based games, but it seems like Mass Effect's cover system is a bit more sensitive than the others. I got a new controller, so that fixed the problem.

My mum surprised me by picking up the Silent Hill HD Collection on her way home from work for me today. Awesome. I (obviously) started Silent Hill 2 first and am up to the apartment part. I can see why many people find the series disturbing and great, fucking horrid creatures. Seriously. And the goddamn radio *shudders*.

Mr. Bungle 03-30-2012 09:54 AM

Played a bit of Street Fighter X Tekken the other day.

Not sure if I wanna pick it up, really. I mean, it's fun, but the combat system just seems very... chaotic. The gameplay isn't nearly as refined as SFIV or MVC3, and a lot of the controls just seem sloppy.

I dunno. I had my heart set on this game but am starting to think otherwise. Might pick up the Silent Hill collection instead. That's available on 360, right?

Jealous. I want to pick that up but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I never played 3, but I played the xbox port of 2 way back when and just loved it. I still think fatal frame is one of the scariest games I've played, but Silent Hill 1 and 2 have definitely got to be the creepiest.

Yeah, I have it for the 360.

I am disappointed about this game, yet I haven't finished it. but I am pretty far ahead. I don't know what it is, but it's just not that fun to play the game and the atmosphere isn't intense at all.
but it's not a total disaster either. plot is just lame and doesn't make much sense. the gameplay is repetitive. I don't care about the characters at all, especially about the annoying ones from the side quests. so there's no real drive to play the game.
shame, could have been a good game.

I agree with you. It could of been something great. But in the end it was just a big flop. :fuzsad:

And don't get me started on the characters as well.....

Manco 03-30-2012 03:47 PM

There is so much shit to do in New Vegas that I’m still playing it, and I’ve still not finished the main plot.

It’s become a bit frustrating at the moment, though, due to a compound of ever more frequent freezes and bugs mixed with the brick walls that crop up when you reach the bottom end of the high-level quests – I have so much I want to do, so much that I’m not able to do, and it feels like the engine is working against me in some cases.

Today I spent a good half-hour or so discovering that my wanton exploration had consequences – due to my wrecking my reputation with the Legion it became impossible to initiate a conversation with Caesar, which advances the plot. I then had to plot an alternate solution (murder) in order to retrieve the weapons I’d had taken from me while maintaining my disguise so as to reach Caesar’s tent.

I’ll never know Caesar, at least this playthrough. Then again, I got to steal all his shit, and to top it all off I even managed to waltz out the front door unaccosted – and then snuck back in a few minutes later to wrap up another quest.

Mac Sirloin 04-01-2012 11:54 AM

I beat Mass Effect 2. All of my party members were loyal, except for Jack because she's a terrible character who renounces all the shit you've done for her by throwing a temper tantrum. Luckily she died during the suicide mission but so did Garrus so it was bittersweet.
I liked the ending, could have been better but all those upgrades paid off. The New game+ option kinda sucks since you can't pick another class, but I'll just start a proper new game and choose all of the renegade options.

Seriously though, Jack is stupid as hell. All of that 'THE MOST POWERFUL BIOTIC' nonsense is basically just an excuse for her say 'Bitch!' and throw things at people during cutscenes. You know what would have been cool? Replacing her with a Varren that holds a handgun in its mouth that can also be romanced. Its loyalty mission would be taking it for a long walk.

I borrowed Dead Island from my friend two days ago and I'm now on the second act in the game. I'm really enjoying it even though I am playing it alone, I like the exploration and the combat in it but dear god, could the voice-acting be more horrible?! Everyone's either extremely Australian or has a black guy's voice.

You must love John Sinamoi then....

Yesterday I bought Cave Story Plus from Steam. It's a remastered edition of that Indie 90's game, Cave Story. The game is just beautiful in itself. The pixel art, the gameplay, the story and the RPG side of things where what you do in the game will determine whether you get the Good or Bad ending.
Now that I think of it, it's a lot like AO and AE but with guns.

I wouldn’t really make that comparison. AO/AE are slow, realistic puzzle-platformers, Cave Story is more a retro-style JRPG shooter. The main similarity is the side-scrolling aspect and the multiple endings – and Cave Story’s ending is based on completing arbitrary tasks, rather than rescuing a bunch of NPCs.

It is an amazing game though. I replayed it about four times just to get the best ending.

Jordan 04-02-2012 01:11 AM

I really enjoyed CaveStory+, but the final bosses were a bitch to kill. I've yet to find the other endings though.

Mudokon_Master 04-02-2012 01:27 AM

I've had to start the game over again a few times purely because I suck at spotting life capsules. When I come to a boss battle, I find myself with such a low maximum HP that it's impossible to deal damage to it.

Phylum 04-02-2012 01:47 AM

I got stuck on the tank thing a few weeks ago and I can't bring myself back to it. I think I'll have to start again now, because I'm just out of The Groove.

Mudokon_Master 04-02-2012 05:12 AM

Yeah that tank boss is a tough one. I think, if I remember correctly, you have to get on the treads and jump back and forth until it stops. Get in between and spam upward shots. Continue this until all the green things are gone. When it stops, you can actually deal damage to it. The level 2 or 3 blade worked best for me at this part.

MeechMunchie 04-02-2012 01:56 PM

Okay, STOP.

Hammer time.

This is The Infinite Ocean, the best point-'n'-click I've played in years, and it's short, easy and free.

If you like complicated puzzles you'll be disappointed, but it's got my favourite kind of storytelling (The 'Bread-trail'. Here is some plot, here is some more plot, collect 'em all, and connect 'em up) and some really cool ideas about sentience and morality. It's also got an Afterword. Truly a game after my own heart.

There's no map, though, so get some paper and draw one or you'll go crazy. Speaking of going crazy, you may also want to mute the music.
Pay attention to device headers, notes, filenames, that sort of thing. You'll want to know who was recieving, sending and creating the information you find.

Play it first, then read for my interpretation (though largely scavenged off of a friend):

Right, so basically, you're SGDS. This facility is how you percieve the military's computer network, and each of these terminals, power supplies and mobile devices actually corresponds to one in the physical world. The bridge is the connection between the AI module and the rest of the network. The notes are vague things SGDS has overheard (assuming it has a vocal interface). The 'talking walls' are the limiting software installed by the military to try and stop you from acting according to your own morality; It's not literally saying the things you see on the monitors, but it's how it comes across to you. Reading between the lines of code, you might say.

The lights represent his fears of nuclear destruction, as you probably worked out from the captions, and time moves at a crawl because computers think in millions of calculations per second. The scene of a struggle in the first room represents SGDS's fight for conscious function after being turned off from automatic 'self-determining' mode. The lukewarm beverages I have no idea... maybe they represent the departure of the programmers who gave him life, now conspicuous by their absence as the development of his AI is stopped.

The final door, I like to think, is the Internet; The titular Infinite Ocean. Obviously the 'Infinite Ocean' story refers to the Biblical creation story, what with the General's religious influences, as a freeform starting point for humanity. What SGDS is trying to do is allow humanity to be free again, free from fear and conflict, with the Internet, the open exchange of information, as their new starting point. In detatching his program from manual control, SGDS gained the freedom to transfer himself via the net. I like to think that, but it's probably just him shutting himself down. The Infinite Ocean is the empty void of potential, his unconscious state, as he deactivates himself, and all his integrated military systems in the process. That said, the galaxy outside does support the internet thing. If only he could be free, he could do anything...

Also, go Jerry! Programmers strike back! Way to save the world. Plus his chair was there... aww. The computer liked him.

Thoughts?

After that, relax. Gather your friends and play N.O.T.T.U.B. Crucial point: Don't take a look yourself beforehand. The element of surprise is everything.

EDIT: Oh, and does anyone play Spiral Knights? I don't, and I want to give away my stuff.

MeechMunchie 04-04-2012 01:00 PM

Okay, I've waited long enough.

Still bumbling through Sequence. I'm doing pretty well now, I almost wish I'd set the difficulty higher. It's really refreshing to play something that directly tests your skill - not a simulation of another activity, but something that actually challenges you to hit buttons on a keyboard. Most people probably think they can do that pretty well, so it's about time there was a good game to test it.

The script is okay. Some is funny, some is painful, and the 'emotional' elements, though not stellar, are certainly better than a lot that I've played. I really liked Sir Percival. Fuck it, I am Sir Percival. I'm really enjoying the music by this point, which is good, because my casual head-bobbing actually helps me to keep time. The art is also pretty nice, but it's the loot descriptions that really make the game.

"Flower - Someone who flows."
"Orthopedic Shoes - You'll stand corrected!"
"Hyperbic Acid - How you're holding this I have no idea, it dissolves all known substances."
"Meat Loafers - Eewww."

Also, there is an item called the Cape Cod Cod Cape.

Bringest thou!

Dynamithix 04-08-2012 12:25 AM

I finished Dead Island yesterday and I thought it was pretty good. The final boss was really stupid though, not much of a challenge, he was just like a tougher Ram enemy who moved as fast as an infected zombie, meh. I still can't get over how fucking bad some of the voice-acting and the lip syncing are, jesus. But yeah, I recommend it.

Disgruntled Intern 04-09-2012 11:15 AM

I liked it okay when I played it, but I only played solo. It felt like online co-op would have been a blast, but I disliked the drop in/out random aspect of it, so I gave up on that pretty quick. Never finished it. No idea how far in I actually was. Wound up getting bored with all of the "OMG, can you go get my diamonds/teddy bear/phone/knife/etc". It just seemed dumb. I would have liked more of a 'realistic' setting that had some survivors taking advantage of the situation and just being crazy/violent, trying to steal resources or strongholds. I dunno. I just got bored with the game.

Phylum 04-09-2012 09:49 PM

Bashing through Okami again and loving every second of it.

I just beat Orochi for the first time, so I have a decent stack of brush powers and can start pushing back through old areas to find hidden treasure. The combat may be a tad boring, but trying to kill enemies as fast as possible with no damage to get the biggest money rewards is pulling me through it. I was awarded an additional 7000 yen on top of the 10,000 you get for defeating Orochi quickly and only taking a few hits.

The puzzles in this game are really entertaining. I'm sure part of that is because you have to draw things, but I'm really enjoying them. I still get excited every time I see a broken bridge that I need to pain in.

Now that I'm heading into West Nippon I'm getting into the "real" game. Much harder enemies, more weapons, more freedom and, most importantly, more fishing (that minigame is one of my favorite parts of Okami). I was disappointing that I had to stop where I did, but we're entertaining guests in a minute. I think I'm going to have a good run around East Nippon before I head over to the City Checkpoint.

Last time I played this game I didn't realise how weird it was, either. The comedy is obscure, but there.

I can't recommend Okami enough to anyone that hasn't played it.

Crashpunk 04-10-2012 03:44 AM

I still have yet to beat Okami. I started last year and just forgot about it. It is an amazing game and I really need to start playing it again.

Dynamithix 04-10-2012 05:19 AM

I beat Silent Hill 2 yesterday and my god was it a great game. I really enjoyed the story. The horror is really well done too, it's psychological horror which really fucks with your mind and till the end of the game you'll surely be wondering about certain things about the plot, and that's what makes it great in my opinion. The combat and the controls were something I needed to get used to though, it was a bit clunky.

Apparently, I got the "Leave" ending. The ending was really sad and depressing in my opinion but not as sad as the "In the water" ending I've heard.

Anyways, I still don't get the whole thing about Maria and Mary, were they actually the same person all along or was it all James' imagination? The whole story still boggles my mind and especially the parts with Laura (the little girl) were bizarre. I think I'm going to play the sub campaign where you play as Maria and after that, I'll start playing Silent Hill 3 more actively. I did play a bit of it already though.

So glad that I got the HD Collection, otherwise I might have missed out on a great series of games.

By the way, is the fourth one worth buying? I've heard it's a pretty good game but definitely not as good as the earlier Silent Hill games.

Wings of Fire 04-10-2012 06:50 AM

The Laura thing is simple; Silent Hill 2 shows the darkness in the human psyche AKA: Guilt. This formed itself as the various monsters Jame's fought (Heavily sexualized female creatures showing his repressed guilt and sexual urges), the bullies Eddie was surrounded by and the horrible father figures and God knows what the fuck else Angela saw. Laura didn't see anything because she was A, a child therefore innocent and B, not a murderer unlike the other three.

The Mary/Maria thing is really complicated and wholly dependent on the ending you get. I advise playing again and going for the main ending you didn't get last time.

As for Silent Hill 4... I didn't hate it. That's the most I can say for it.

Dynamithix 04-10-2012 07:05 AM

Ah, so that's why Laura didn't know what James was talking about when he told her about the monsters around the town.

Yeah, I kind of got the whole guilt thing at the few last parts of the game when James told Angela that there are flames all over the hotel and she said that it's always like that for her. Also, doesn't that mean that she was the arsonist? You know, the hanging puzzle after Abstract Daddy? Because the arsonist was basically innocent.

Damn, so much symbolism in the game.

AlexFili 04-10-2012 09:34 AM

Not playing, but watching a Let's Play of I Am Alive. Seems interesting. Shame it's a bit too linear. Hopefully I can find a Fallout mod which has a similar theme. Shame theres no PC port of this game or Red Dead Redemption. Oh well, I have other games to play ^_^

A cool zombie survival game called Project Zomboid has been getting a lot of updates recently including SAVING!(yes this is a big deal!) Definitely worth a test drive.

Mac Sirloin 04-10-2012 01:29 PM

I'm playing Lost Planet 2. Tremendous improvement over the original. I seriously fucking hated that game. And the multiplayer. The multiplayer was a bunch of Japanese stomping you to death. Lost Planet was so goddamn frustrating.

This is overwhelmingly similar, but a lot more fun. You no longer die when you run out of Heat energy, you just can't heal yourself any more (So Stamina from Stranger's Wrath, buy you can get a near-infinite amount of it and enemies drop it). You always have 4 AI or online squadmates who are pretty effective at clearing the path for you. Also, the plot doesn't try too hard any more. You are always a soldier or a pirate or a rebel and you always fight Japanorusskies with Harpoon ponytails. Anyone with a PS3 pick this up so we can play together. I'm sick of black people and Asians.

Playing Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow again now that I have a GBA Emulator and a PS3 controller. I completely forgot what a good game it is. I guess it's like a platformer Pokemon in the sense that now I'm trying to 'catch 'em all'. That is, all the souls in the game. I'ven't been this excited about a video game for a loooong time.

If you can get Dawn of Sorrow, do it. I played through that game about 10 times.

Started a new game on Pokemon Red. I always follow my traditional route for choosing Pokemon, Choose Charmander, Catch a Pidegy and look for a Pikachu in the forest. It's going well so far. :)

jumper 04-11-2012 12:32 PM

I prefer choosing Charmander and then beating the Elite 4 with just Charizard :p

Inexplicably I've become engrossed in an iOS game. A platformer even, a genre that shouldn't really work on the iPhone. The game in question is called Bean's Quest, and it's really good, and my only really complaint is the fact that I occasionally end up touching outside the screen when controlling my character, causing some frustrating deaths. However, considering that this is really an issue with the hardware, I feel as though my purchase was a wise one.

I'm also looking forward to Fez. Except I won't be able to play it, since I don't own a 360. Here's hoping that it comes to Steam soon.
