There are loads of those things where I live.

I was following the trackbed of an abandoned railroad line when I came across this shut down industry.

In actual fact it's a kaolin-dryer. When the kaolin is extracted from the ground, it's mixed with water and sucked up to one of these places. That huge central structure is actually a furnace, once it's lit the doors are kept closed, and the heat travels under the floor toward the chimney stack you see at the far end. The kaolin water is sitting on the heated floor, and this causes the water mixed with the kaolin to evaporate, leaving dry kaolin, which is bagged and then loaded onto a train.

The kaolin is then taken off to be used in pottery, paper, and as a filler for various things. Kaolin is what makes paper glossy and porcelain glazed. It also acts as a whitening agent.

It's the second one I've explored so far. There's about two or three more on that particular railroad line that I still haven't explored, with the last one on the line being an absolutely huge kaolin drying complex. Plus there is a second abandoned line that I haven't explored at all yet, with about 10 kaolin dryers - So I've got my work cut out!

ferill, asa I told Charlie a night or two ago, I was imagining you as someone with longer, black hair. Don't ask me why, I'd just pieced together an image of what I thought you might look like, as with most members here :p But, I must admire your cuteness, and almost innocence.

I will make no promises, but I might have photos of moi available soon. Though, if you happen to live in Australia, you would have seen me on national television at Aussie Stadium, carrying the New Zealand flag out onto the field, in remberance of those in ANZAC, who fought with their lives to defend our two great nations. You would have also seen me matching through Sydney today, as it is every year, to once again comemorate their dedication. And if you live close to me, you'll see my mug in the local newspaper, after taking part in the Cataflaque Party, for once again, the rememberance of those in ANZAC. Gawd, what a long, tiring, day. Yet, all that unwanted publicity.

Hey, I believe I gave you kids 2 pictures with me smiling. I admit, I do look sad in that last pic, but that is my concentration face. I'm trying to take a good pic with the digital camera, while holding onto it and having the sun in my eyes for the right light. You'd look like you haven't smiled in a while either! :p

Yeah, those were old pictures from when I was 13. I just posted 'em because they were the only pics I had that I approved of. :D

I've had long hair for a while and I love it. I have a natural wave to my hair, so whenever I'm geting a trim, the hairdresser always tells me how much she envies me. I also have friends that just like to play with my hair. I have to use a ton of conditioner to get it looking and feeling good though...a ton.

My hair is very soft and ebony-dark, but like some weird anime character, all my hair gathers together in a group of pointed edges. I don't have to use conditioner in my hair that often, luckily, it's naturally beautiful :p
