Is Sonic popular?

MeechMunchie 03-16-2012 02:44 PM

Was.

It was never good though. Always shit. Assways.

But your forgetting the amazing plot twists in the game.....

:

As Sonic celebrates his birthday with his friends, a mysterious being known as the Time Eater suddenly appears, destroying the party and sucking everyone through various "time holes", scattering them across different places in history.
Well it does beat Super Mario storyline. LOL :D

MeechMunchie 03-16-2012 03:20 PM

No, actually, Sonic’s thing wasn’t simply “running fast”. The original games were built around the concept of momentum-based movement and platforming. Compare how Sonic moves and jumps from a standstill to how he runs and jumps after building up speed, they’re quite different.

So levels were built around this concept of momentum and inertia. You don’t just jump from platform to platform, you need to build up the momentum to cross a gap that you couldn’t get past from a standstill. To reach higher areas in the level, you need to get the momentum to take off from ramps and gain enough altitude. Hitting an enemy or item box bounces you around, and several elements and obstacles (bumpers, spikes, enemies in your path, pits, fans...) exist to thwart your attempts at building up momentum.

The idea is you use this momentum to reach better paths, get more points and complete levels faster. The problem here is that you do NOT get momentum by just holding right through levels, and speed is not always a good thing. What the classic Sonic games did was create a platformer based around moving through the level environment carefully and fluidly, and that is what gives them a lasting appeal.

Mac Sirloin 03-16-2012 03:58 PM

That lasting appeal is slapped sideways when all of your momentum and fluidity means nothing when the levels are built to bring you to a full stop repeatedly, often by smashing an enemy into you, for no reason other than they rarely actually built those levels to be any fun at all.

I have fun playing classic Sonic, but it is a lot of bullshit. Dynamite Heddy was a better game.

Sonic is a a garbage man. Shadow the Hedgehog had a gun and gigantic, fuck-off eyeball doing you favours and shit. Shadow for President.

I'm replaying Bioshock because, I mean, fuckin' Bioshock, you know? Fuckin' Bioshock.

I'm also playing Mass Effect 2. I don't like Miranda or her boobs. I think Miranda and her boobs is a bad character and while I'm sure someone is going to explain how great Miranda and her boobs are, I will not be listening because only Garrus, Mordin or Grunt will be following me until I find more alien buddies.

I'm also just going to check if you can kill off Jack because she's a fucking stupid character.

...

You can't? That's even fucking stupider. I'm glad I bought this used, Bioware. You stinky monkey.

You mean a game which rewards building up momentum and playing well has obstacles which punish not paying attention and just blindly running forward?!

So the point is more 'Momentum and superspeed are for specific problem areas and the bulk of the game is traditional platforming'?

Fair enough, explains why I sucked so bad at them. Doesn't excuse Sonic magically flying around in the cartoons but that's my problem.

I'm playing Corpse Party. Sounds like a pretty neat game, right? Pretty Mactastic?

I'm in over my head.

We're playing Machinarium. By we, I mean me and my dad. I haven't played it this far before so it's pretty fun to solve the puzzles together and such. It also has a nice soundtrack. Yeah.

Oh and Deus Ex. I'm wondering if I should start making a Let's play of it. Then again, no one would watch it.

I think it’s more “most of the game is designed to reward momentum and speed but a lot of the obstacles are designed to punish blindly running forward”.

Momentum is not just running forward. Preserving speed and momentum is not just running forward and hoping obstacles magically stay the fuck out of your way.

You guys are still talking about Sonic the faghog....

I for one are going to upgrade my desktop that I got for free to play more video games, I was going to tell you guys but no, I did not feel like telling you.

You just told us idiot. Also Sonic the Faghog? wow, your not even trying are you.

Anyway I've been playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl single-player, just finished All-Star Mode with all the characters and i'm now trying to knock out 5 bots on cruel brawl...my god it's hard.

Shannon wanted to get the new Naruto fighting game. It's actually a really good fighter. I was surprised.

Dynamithix 03-19-2012 06:52 AM

It looks like it plays really well and the graphics are quite nice. It got pretty good reviews too.

I dusted off my PS2 and started playing Resident Evil 4 again. I swear I'm going to beat it this time. The last time I got stuck at some part but now I'm going to beat it. Damn controls take so much time to get used to.

Crashpunk 03-19-2012 07:38 AM

RE4 controls so much better on the Wii, I actually beat it not to long ago and it wasn't that hard.

OANST 03-19-2012 07:48 AM

I like it because it feels like it takes actual strategy instead of memorization of button combos. Some of the characters are kind of cheap, but there are ways to counter them, and these cheap characters are so weak if you do figure out how to counter them that it's not really a problem.

Shannon hates it when I use the puppet wielding characters as she can't even get near me with them.

MeechMunchie 03-19-2012 10:41 AM

Okay, that's twice in a row. If he mentions Shannon again, we can make fun of him like schoolboys. Which I am.

OANST 03-19-2012 10:48 AM

She sent me a message saying that she figured out how to beat me when I use the puppets. She "figured it out" against the computer. Heh. She's in for a surprise.

Those puppets are fucking cheap.
