Statikk HDM 10-13-2006 09:01 AM

I tried listening to contemporary/pop country in the car with my mom and other relatives on numerous occasions. After about 15 minutes I freak out and ask "How can you stand this shit? Its so trite and boring! Do you have any older country music or rock you like?" Is it just me, or has country on the radio been suckass pop music with twangy guitars and almost completely lacking in merit for oh, I don't know, 10 years?
300th Post in the the thread. Booyah.

OANST 10-13-2006 09:43 AM

More like 20.

Arxryl 10-13-2006 02:00 PM

Also, it's proven that country makes people more aggressive. Even Acid Rock made people less upset after listening to it...

Statikk HDM 10-14-2006 06:55 AM

Country makes people more aggressive after they listen to it? Most of its a bunch of pansy shit about how perfect their lives and wives are in East Nowhere, Suburbia nowadays. Or how much they love "God". I say that because its never just "God" or "Jesus" because its sang in a smarmy, over the top fashion and so molismoed it ain't even English anymore.
"Ah love Jay-esus!"
I can't understand the appeal.
How its outselling rap and metal is beyond me, though both of those have fell off in quality on the radio, too.

Arxryl 10-14-2006 07:02 AM

I don't know exactly how it makes people more aggressive, but it does.
Maybe something to do with how people hate stupid people, and country sounds like a bunch of stupids gathered up for a meeting.

They ran tests to prove this. they played different kinds of music very silently at the restauraunt. They had people take surveys after their meal, and more people were aggressive, rude, and mean when they took the survey after listening to country.
Funny little fact...

Statikk HDM 10-14-2006 02:37 PM

Here is an article about aggression as it relates to music.
http://www.apa.org/journals/releases/psp845960.pdf
They bitch about heavy metal lyrics being incomprehensible, though men could interpret them and hear the words clearer than women. Listen don't hear! Also, after listening to violent music people scored significantly higher on verbal tests related to "violent words".
The paper made some good points but I think the whole methodology is pretty flawed.
I don't like how for the non-violent stuff they used two Beastie Boys songs to offset the harder rap(Cypress Hill and Run DMC) in the second test. They also stuck with the song Jerk Off again for the second test even though it wasn't contrasted with another Tool song like the first test was. A mellower Suicidal Tendencies song was chosen to offset I Wouldn't Mind in the second test though. Sloppy sloppy.
The Night Santa went Crazy, even while being a humorous song had the same relative effects as the serious(their words) violent music did. Weird. Why the hell did they use Violent Femmes in the second part? Also, way to say that people who like "violent" music will be sucked into a spiral of "antisocial behavior", APA. Way to just pull that right out of your ass, Anderson and Carnegy. How do they explain the metal and hard rap communities if this music causes "relationships to deteriorate" and creates a "hostile work environment" that effects "personality". What are we supposed to listen to, you big whiny douches? In short, I knew the whole study would be bullshit when they referenced the PMRC in the first paragraph of the paper. And where was the country music!?!?!

Arxryl 10-14-2006 05:01 PM

I fully agree with you. I listen to quite a few violent songs, (including The night santa went crazy) and I am not "anti- Social."
Some people are just stupid like that I guess...

Leto 10-15-2006 01:16 AM

You only feel the music if you listen to it. I reccomend Shpongle, or pretty much any decent ambient stuffs.

Click microradio. I like this muchly, probably due to Melodies from Mars being my favourite Aphex Twin album.

I haven't heard anything by System of a Down, that I know of. I've been meaning to check out their music.
Current genres and their bands:
Thrash Metal: Slipknot, Korn, Dethklok
Heavy Metal: Metallica

I'm sorry, your genre definer is rather off.

Hobo 10-15-2006 03:31 AM

Yeah. Metallica are more trip hop i think you'll find.

Statikk HDM 10-15-2006 06:59 AM

I think ANN NEELY was being deliberately obtuse. Korn is a nu-metal band, Dethklock is a parody band that satirizes many different forms of metal with their own show on Adult Swim.
Metallica was one of the finest thrash bands in America at one time. Say, I don't know, 14 years ago?
After looking at some other studies on the effects of music don't listen to music. Its all bad for you.
Country Music: Increases alcohol consumption, decreases frequency of sex, leads to early marriages.
Rap music: Promotes gang violence, objectification of women, and drug use.
Heavy Metal music: You'll turn into a sociopath and hate women and religion.
Adult Contemporary: You'll turn into a pussy.
Jazz/Rock Fusion: People will laugh at you for liking artists like Chick Corea and you'll never get laid. You'll wank constantly to Zappa "pick" albums and you'll die a broken man.
Funk: Cocaine is a helluva drug!

Arxryl 10-15-2006 07:23 AM

Interesting results... But no where on there does it say Video game music is bad although I can probably imgine what it'd say...

Video game music: People will think you are a geek if you listen to it in public. Stay confined to your room for the rest of your life.

Which works fine for me...

OANST 10-15-2006 12:08 PM

I bought a bunch of albums recently. All of which I love.

Califone- Roots and Crowns- Awesome
Holopaw- self titled- Beautiful
Holopaw- Quit +/or Fight- Extra crazy beautiful
Built To Spill- Keep it Like a Secret- The absolute shit

I recommend all these titles. Buy them. Love them.

Arxryl 10-15-2006 12:24 PM

I'll try and find a few samples... those sound pretty good.

I recommend Weird Al Yankovich. One of the funnier people out there.

GTdragon 10-15-2006 01:04 PM

I'm more of an oldies junkie (0w0) music from the 1920's to the 1950's. To be speicific, rag-time, jazz, and dixieland.

Arxryl 10-15-2006 01:36 PM

I also enjoy Jazz. I used to play the Saxophone in middle school, but I rarely play it anymore.

And I remember listening to some rag-time. it's pretty good!

If you like dixieland then you might enjoy Holopaw. It's good to hear a southern band that uses traditional southern instrumentation and yet doesn't sound like they just fell off the short bus. Southern music these days is just so goddamned stupid.

*gets dictionary*
Yes, I quite enjoy being obtuse.
I know that Korn is Nu-Metal, it's just that a lot of stupid people argue with me on that, so, I try to save my keyboard the work and just label it "Thrash Metal".
I've heard Metallica described more as a "pop" genre nowadays, but never a "trip Hop".
As for Dethklok, I know it's a show.

Bullet Magnet 10-16-2006 02:02 PM

You know, I quite enjoy the Rat Pack...

If you like ragtime, listen to Dream Theater - The Dance of Eternity. The ragtime section in that is so insanely kickass.

Arxryl 10-17-2006 05:20 AM

Hm...I'll try a few samples then!

Statikk HDM 10-17-2006 07:07 AM

Dream Theater is a great band. Hell, pick up anything.
Edit: Sorry about the obtuse thing. Said it a lot in high school after being accused of being "deliberately obtuse" by a Professor.

You win OWF for managing to talk about this section on here.

I feel the metropolis pt 1 keyboard solo is more fun to listen to though

Kamille 10-18-2006 11:11 AM

Just bought Weird Al Yankovic's new album Straight Outta Lynnwood its great if you like Weird Al you should try to find music by The Tubes.

The one that sounds like it belongs in a Sonic game?
That's great.

Fun fact: It's actually a keyboard/guitar unison.
