I've actually been stuck trying to make music for like two months. It's been depressing me incredibly and I'm starting to give up. I haven't forgotten anything you've taught me, and sometimes I'll even throw in something you've shown me while just playing another song.

And Job one of the big things I want to teach you about, mostly by showing you pieces of music, are themes and ideas and ways you can experiment with developing them. The kind of things that can get the ball rolling on compositions.

I'm going to learn java over Xmas. Teach me that.

I love Java for being easy and having types, but also obligatorily hate it At this point I can't say if Java is a good language to learn though. For general desktop work is C# a better option in the post-Mono world?

I'm still tempted to point beginners towards Python. It's pretty simple to make things happen, but the library/import system and distribution always frustrates me.

I read a programmer’s joke recently that is just simple enough for me to get:

“Knock knock.”
“Who’s there?”

…
“… Java.”

It depends on how you want to use it. Java is not the fastest programming language, but you might not *want* the fastest one, you probably won't be programming Crysis or anything. Modern PCs are very fast anyway. If you would like to code something perfomance-heavy, you should switch over to C++ or other C-like language.

I program in Java, I don't really complain.

I just don't get the hate. It's like hating python for being more like a script language. I mean, that's the point, right? Python's awesome too.

Well, now I feel dirty.

Java's reputation for being slow isn't really warranted any more. I don't love it as a language, but I'm stuck with it at work. It's a pretty good choice for a first language to learn because it's simpler than C/C++, but makes a lot of the fundamentals more explicit than Python.

I love Python with a passion, but that's because I know it's better than Java - if you start with Python and then have to move onto another language, you're just going to get annoyed at it not providing all the things that Python does automagically.

What's wrong with that? Always seemed simple enough to me.

My uni's intro to software engineering course taught Python, and I actually preferred Java. The fact that you could look through the API and see how data structures are defined from primitives was nice for someone who knew fuck-all about programming.

Now that I am somewhat more learned I really appreciate Python. Beyond teaching control flow, I don't think it's a good beginners language though.

It's a tool. You use it for the right job. Of course Java will never be as fast as a compiled language, but as far as portable non-compiled languages go, it's the champion of it's class. Typically Java will run an order of magnitude faster than Python or whatever JavaScript derivative is currently popular.

Problem with Java/C# or any other GC'ed language performance wise is that GC kills. Random 5-20msec lag spikes from GC kill real time apps.

Also they have the JIT overhead, they will always start slower than native apps. N-Gen somewhat fixes this for CLR on Windows.
