Anti-Virus

Posted 04-23-2013 at 05:10 AM by Mr. Bungle
Yeah, I need an anti-virus. One that doesn't cost any money and is reliable. Help me out, computer science nerds. Or at least people who know shit about anti-viruses.

I don't have any viruses, by the way. At least none that I know of. I just really don't want my laptop to die of internet AIDS.

Avast seems like pretty good option for free right now.

Avast is great assuming you don't run Vista.

The popular ones seem to be AVG Free, Avast and Avira - Research those and make your own mind up, I guess. Other people seem to just use Windows Defender and do a twice daily scan using Malwarebytes.

I'm using AVG Free since like half a year ago and I had no notifications of any viruses or anything. It's that good.

I've heard it doesn't pick up a lot of viruses but that may be bias from people. I've been using it for years and not had any problems, but then my browsing habits are mundane.

I've been using paid AVG since forever and I'd never had issues with it until recently. It missed a rootkit or something, and it took MSE(!!!) noticing something suspicious, and me rebooting into safemode because it was going to try to run some nasty shit on next boot. I managed to clear it up, no thanks to AVG.

Also, I seem to be running free AVG despite having a paid license. I don't actually know what the paid license is worth now that all of the additional features are paid addons. I've been meaning to swap to free Avast for a while now, although I hear good things about paid Kaspersky.

I dislike AVG Free as they're always trying to trick you in to upgrading to the paid version. And they keep installing add-ons I don't want and have big scary warning messages when I disable them.

I currently use MSE, but I'm told it's not the best at identifying viruses.

Always gotta be free... Dish out 50 bucks for Webroot and you're set TBH. These days computer security shouldn't be something you save money on (to the point you're not willing to spend anything on it, that is).

AVG has been great until the most recent update where I can't bloody activate it for some reason and I don't know how to uninstall and reinstall it. I'm not getting any viruses though (touch wood) so maybe it's working somehow...I know I can't run scans.

Bear in mind that Avast! has been known to conflict with Steam.

I use Spybot S&D.

How did you uninstall AVG, STM? It's very annoying at this point.

Ha ha ha! Oh... You're serious?

You have to pay if you want a reliable Anti-Virus. AVG free couldn't protect against shit, but the paid version should be better.

I have been using Kaspersky for about 2-3 years now and have no complaints about it.

Yes, but I've had viruses that did less damage to my computer than Norton.

Operating System definitely plays a big part. I would recommend not using XP (or anything older). There are plenty of free anti-virus problems such as Ad-Aware Antivirus which will do a basic job for free. As a tip try to avoid downloading .exe files wherever possible (modified dlls can be dodgy also) and backup your non corruptable files (mp3s/pictures/videos) regularly.

Got AVG. It's already found a trojan and several smaller, less significant viruses.

Thanks guys. It's good to be clean.
