Outcry over disowned US rape girl

Offers of help are pouring in for an eight-year-old Liberian girl disowned by her own family in Phoenix, Arizona, after being raped by four boys.

The girl is under the care of the Arizona Child Protective Service (CPS) because her parents said she had shamed them, and they did not want her back.

Phoenix police said calls had come in from all over the US offering money, or even to adopt the young girl.

The boys, Liberian immigrants aged nine to 14, have been charged with rape.

The case has sparked outrage across the US and even drawn condemnation from Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, an outspoken anti-rape campaigner.

"I think that family is wrong. They should help that child who has been traumatised," Mrs Johnson-Sirleaf told CNN.

"They too need serious counselling because clearly they are doing something, something that is no longer acceptable in our society here," she added.

Brutal attack

Media reports said the girl was lured into a shed on 16 July with promises of chewing gum by the four young boys.

There, they held her down and took turns assaulting her for 10 to 15 minutes, before her screams alerted officers nearby.

The oldest suspect, a 14-year-old boy, will be tried as an adult on charges of kidnapping and sexual assault, police said on Friday. He is being held in police custody until trial.

The other three - aged 9, 10, and 13 - are charged as juveniles with sexual assault and kidnapping.

But the police said no charges will be filed against the parents.

"They didn't abandon the child," Phoenix police sergeant Andy Hill told AFP news agency. "They committed no crime. They just didn't support the child, which led to CPS coming over there."

Sgt Hill said people from eight or nine US states had called wanting to adopt the girl or donate money.

"It has been unbelievably fantastic in terms of support for the child," he said.
As much as the incident itself and especially the parents response disgusts me, I was nevertheless slightly heartwarmed by the acts of the Americans donating or offering to adopt her.

Thank God there are still decent people left in this world.

The fact that there are still people out there who treat children as their commodities horrifies me beyond belief. I don't ever give any sort of tough guy routine but I'd go into a room with her rapists and unashamedly and unfalteringly beat the shit out of all four of them.

Her parents? I'd feel nauseous being within ten miles of them.

Some people just don't see that a child is not an object that you can "own" or "decide" not to take responsibility for. It is a human being.

This sickens me.

you know me, so you know this really fucks me off. no need for me to go ranting about it.

there is no punishment great enough for certain crimes committed. i just hope that something in their life or after it will bring justice to this shitty mess.

In other news, Sudanese woman, Lubna Hussein facing 40 lashes for the heinous crime of wearing pants in public. Not not wearing pants, but wearing pants.

Should the wider world step in? While we have a peculiar "Prime Directive" type impression that tells us to stay our hands and not imperialistically interfere in other cultures' affairs, we are talking about 50% of a significant population of people who are being consistently and systematically oppressed by the bizarre historical and partially biological quirk of patriarchy. Perhaps we have an obligation to meddle?

Unfortunately, meddling causes more problems than it fixes. Also, we should probably start meddling in genocide issues before we start worrying about simple oppression.

Those parents should have their children taken from them and face negligence charges at the very least. I'd probably want those charges extended to the crime of Failing The Human Race.

This is why Muslims aren't people. They can get promoted once they convert or at least lighten up, but until then they're fair game.
