NES region problems.

Posted 01-03-2012 at 04:34 AM by Crashpunk
I'm been wanting to buy a NES game online. The only problem is that it is been sent from the US and meaning it is the US version.

I'm a little confused with if the NES is region locked or not. I have a PAL/UK NES system and I was wondering is US games would work on it?

Does anyone know?

The NES is region locked, but it took me 2 minutes to stop it from being region locked, it involves snapping a certain pin with a pair of pliers, but I did it years ago so I can't remember exactly how to do it now, but there are plenty of guides online and it can be easily done in your home very quickly, all you need are pliers and a screwdriver.

I really don't want to mess with anything. If I break it, I'll be very upset.

Apparently some US games can work on UK NESes, Only problem is which games?

I don't know exactly, but if you really don't want to do it I'm sure there it someone who will do it for you. But trust me, all you need is a step by step guide and you will be fine.

I found this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWYC93JtHbA Looks simple enough.

However I'm still unsure if I should do it.

I don't have a NES and I'm not sure why this interested me enough to find out that there is a detailed video of how to take your NES apart and where the screws all go. It also shows what chip you want to disconnect the pin from (even though it's to solve a different problem).

Yeah I actually did it to fix a different problem but I just happened to know that it also bypassed the regional lock out.

I actually collect old games and consoles as a sort of hobby. I'm intrested how Gaming was 10-20 years ago.

If you're going to buy the stuff for the love of god keep it in good condition. If you want to play the games, it's easy enough to go here.

There's apparently some bullshit reason as to why that is actually legal, so I figure I can post a link to it.

Emulators aren't the same as the feeling of playing a SNES infront of your old TV, square controller in your hand... I sort of wished I played Super Metroid that way back in the day, rather than 12 years after it came out infront of a PC with a quicksave function. Still a fantastic game, though.

I would rather buy the original game and play it on the console then play it on emulators.

No I hate it, but it has to be done as part of retro gaming

My point was that if you're going to collect them don't fucking break a part of the NES.

Poine well taken Phylum, I really don't want to break into my NES just to play a game. I can always wait for a PAL version to be on sale

This is really not a difficult "fix". In the video DH provided, it's going to take more than a safety pin the cut that 4th leg from the chip. (You can even see where the chip was previously cut, he just bends it away with the pin) I keep a pair of flush-cut dikes (side cutters) for applications like this. A regular set of cutters will work just as well. Other than that, the video is very thorough.

I remember about 5-7 years ago when NES consoles came into the shop like mad with the dreaded blinking red light. Remember that problem where we were all somehow oddly taught to take out the cartridge and blow??? lol. Replacing that black 72 pin connector solved it every time. The replacements are quite a bit more resilient than the original ones.
