New Tattoo

Posted 09-11-2010 at 07:31 AM by nowtun
I got my new tattoo today. I had my sons name and date of birth put into abe's chest scar that I have on my back.

(Plan on eventually getting the scar re inked as it has faded)

so what? as long as he's not harming himself or others, he can do what he likes to his body.

personally, i've grown out of the idea of having an Oddworld tattoo. i've already got a tattoo in mind, but its money that stops me from getting it soon.

but yeah, that tattoo is something you can just call 'tribal' if you wanted, so it saves having to explain the whole Oddworld thing.

I wasn't judging him for doing it. It just would seem like an odd thing to see on an elderly man.

I was never one for big tattoos, but I do like the fact it's a plain colour. I often think that tattoos in full colour look a bit tacky. Since god knows when, everybody in my (we'll call it a) line has had a simple tattoo of a bird on their forearm, from Christ can only tell us which Great Grandad down to myself (with the exception of my dad who just never got around to it). I used to say I'd never get a tattoo, but after examing my Grandad's forearms, I decided these particular ones looked quite decorative.

I had the oddworld tattoo over 6 years ago and planned then that I would put the age and name of my first child in it.

@MA yeah thats what I was calling it today so I didn't have to explain it.

I tire of explaining it to people who see it. They always ask what it is, as if it's meant to have some deep emotional meaning, fuckers. I tell them it's from Oddworld THEN they want to know what that is.

Ah well.. the next tattoo from the my list of favorite games is the Mark of Shame from Halo. My body is going to be dedicated to the games of which I loved the most.

Mudanchee emblem on my upper arm, I was going for the Mudomo emblem on my other arm before realizing that it would look shit so I'm going to have to get it beneath the Mudanchee one.

When I think about it, those emblems can actually mean something, in terms of what they contain.

Mudanchee house Scrabs who are strong and doesn't afraid of anything.
Mudomo house Paramites who are cunning and smart.

I might get and oddworld tat but I feel I'll have to get a cross or something so it doesn't look idolistic.

I find it strange that so many of you apparently love oddworld enough to get a tattoo.

I hate the idea that all tattoos MUST have a deep inner meaning (with the exception of a couple of memorial pieces all of mine simply have personal aesthetic value), but ripping a tattoo from a fairly forgotten video game just seems weird to me.

Attaching your son's name and date of birth to the tattoo seems to make a confusing statement about your priorities.

and what do you mean by this?

who are you to comment what my priorities are?

I am a casual observer. I think this puts me in a prime position to comment about what your priorities are, or at least appear to be, thanks to the statement you're making with your tattoos.

Okay, sure.

You like oddworld SO much that you got Abe's chest piece done in large scale on your back. Fine, cool. Great.

You have a kid. Kudos. You choose to honor your child with a tattoo. Awesome.

But by incorporating the two tattoos together it's like you're saying, "I love oddworld, and I love my child, but I REALLY love oddworld".

I highly doubt this was your intent, but it's what came across. As I said earlier I don't think all tattoos should mean anything - they can just be pleasing to the eye. But mixing a tattoo with very little meaning (come on, do you really relate to abe on such a deep level?) with an important tattoo like the one you just had done is a major clash.

But that's just me.

And that's great. Maybe I'm biased because I have a fair amount of work done and a part of that has been the planning of placement and flow.

I wasn't trying to attack him or his tattoos. As stand alone pieces I like them both.

I am REALLY offended by your comments because basically you are saying that I love oddworld more than my son and I think you are the only person who has made that assumption. What you dont seem to realise is that this tattoo along with all my tattoos are planned out and I do look at the flow.

The putting of my sons name was part of the original plan for the tattoo and now I have had it completed 6 years later.

Also I think you are contradicting yourself when you say that you dont think all tattoos have to have meaning. But you see a problem with me putting my sons name on this tattoo????? If they dont need to have meanings then there shouldnt be a problem.

By the way all my tattoos have a personal meaning to me.

Since he got all pissy I need to retract my statement about them as stand alone pieces. I was trying to be nice, but really I've seen nicer prison tattoos.

Okay, wait. That's not fair. A lot of prison tattoos are simply amazing. The point is that the line work on your abe tattoo is horrible, the ink was obviously placed at varying levels, the stencil was placed wonky, and the script is...yow.

So there you go. In addition to disliking the placement of your newest piece, I think both tattoos in general look pretty shitty.

NOW you have something to be offended about.

@ Rigd3

Thanks I did see this but its still not clear where this assumption came from just based on me showing pictures of my tattoo.
Maybe he's just reading too much into it.

Actually I'm not offended in the slightest about this as it is a meaningless bitch fit. Once I've seen your 'amazing tattoos' then you might have weight behind your comments.

Oh and about the 'varying levels of ink' yeah your right but its because I didnt look after it 6 years ago as I should have and if you had read earlier comments I have stated that I plan on getting it re-inked.

Disgruntled Intern's Avatar
No, it's not a bitch fit. It's that your tattoos look like shit and aren't worth showing off.

And despite it being painfully obvious you didn't take care of them, that has nothing to do with what a crap job the tattooist did. When I said the ink was at varying levels, I meant varying levels of DEPTH. Meaning the tattooist didn't apply the same amount of pressure throughout the piece.

And you're right, maybe I am reading a little too much into the work on your back. But as someone who knows what the symbol means and where it originates, I can't view it as just another piece of tribal garbage.

Even if I did, I'd still dislike the placement. Script and tribal don't mix. Not very well, at least.

As far as showing off my own work in comparison to yours, I'll take a pass. The majority of my work is on my torso/thighs and I doubt anyone has any interest in seeing pictures of me in my underwear. Nor do I have any interest in posing for such pictures.

And since my calves and forearms are 'in progress' it wouldn't be worth showing those, either.

So when you get your back 're-inked', do yourself a favor and go to another shop.

The fact that you think the shitstain on your back is good enough to post is funny enough, but it's even better because you think it's better than anyone elses period.

Agreed with Shaman. DI I think your being unnecessarily bitchy, I don't really want to get involved but I love giving my opinions too much. I thought Nowtun's tattoo was nice and pretty cool with the child on his back thing. You don't really have much of an argument against Nowtun because every time you yo-yo up, he reels you back down. Again.
