The coding wore my arms down to a bloody pulp, rendering me unable to manipulate any object in the world again, but it was worth it.

But how will the muggle learn anything new?

The scientist will learn how the lightning machine works. After being zapped a second time, he will probably decide that dealing with the lever is work best suited to a few postgraduate students, while he and his colleagues will get to the important business of measuring and recording the route of power transference.

Or, alternatively, his colleagues will learn much from his smouldering corpse.

Even if the individual is worse off, society has been bettered by that scientist's sacrifice.
