Something different...

Posted 06-14-2012 at 11:32 AM by Varrok
Hey, guys... I can't help but notice that since the last week a big number (bigger than usual, I think) of sad blogs showed up here, so I though I could share something happier with ya...

I've just bought a guitar. To be honest it's my very first electric guitar in life, here it is:

Kramer Vanguard FR440-S BKM and Marshall MGFX30

As you could've guessed I'm not (yet) a good guitarist, so I'll be trying hard to improve myself from now on, and when I'll be good enough, maybe I'll make some covers (I'm planning to play some thrash and heavy metal)

...well... um... that is all from me

It's funny because you said 'heavy metal', heh heh.

I'm not really a fan of guitars that look like that, but if that's what gets you off, I suppose.

Learn the fuck out of your scales and different chord voicings. Honestly. I don't play so much any more, but I used to play a lot, and I got good at learning really complicated lines without really knowing what I was doing. Then when I wanted to improvise, I didn't know where to start. Then I learnt the scales, which was frustrating, because I wanted to go back to more interesting things than scales, but if I did play the fun stuff, I remained a shit improviser.

Yes, learning scales is currently high on my priorities list, do you know a good place to start? I mean, if you learned by web (I don't have a teacher)

That is a very nice guitar. I've had an Epiphone Les Paul style for about 5 1/2 years now, I love it. Yours is better than mine, though.

If you're into rock music, practice pentatonic scales. They're easy, and get you used to the motions (and if you wiggle your fingers on them, you sound great to non-guitarists).

But I would also get used to ionian scales (regular major scales - if you want to follow a logic, start at C and learn them in the pattern of the circle of fifths), and from there you can get into all the modal stuff (just the same as ionan scales, but taking a different degree as the root. For example, taking the D of an ionian C scale and without changing the original intervals of the C ionian, get up to the next D, which is dorian mode, by the way).

It is? Cool. It has a very low string action though, I'll better get used to it. Today a friend who happens to have the same (Epiphone LP) guitar as you is coming to me to check out my rig so I'll be able to compare them.

I'm a bit dissapointed by the amp though, the effects aren't as good as I though they'll be or I just can't set them up correctly (or both!)

How does people know how to set Gain, Bass, Mid, Treble to sound like xxx?

Nice guitar dude. I've been "playing" for, let's say six years and I'm only getting around to learning my scales and shit. Theory can only make you play better, right? Not to say I'm a bad player.

Get a distortion pedal. They're much better to use in my opinion seeing as you can get the sound you want through the pedal and, with a quick stamp, you can switch to clean.

Also, where are you learning your theory? From a teacher or from a website? I haven't the money for lessons so I'm trying to find a nice site that I can use.

This is decent and covers lots of basic stuff, but not overly well imo. The interval recognition tool on that site is good.

Or if you're serious, Musition is great, but costs.

Yeah, I'm planning to buy a dis. pedal at some point, the model for this amp is a bit overpriced imo, so it's not gonna happen soon.

I learn from web tutorials, but mine wouldn't be useful for you (not in English)

That's a nice guitar, but I'm more impressed with the amp, I'd kill for it.

I bought it for an approx. 122 GBP. The amp itself is not expensive as for 30W

Get a Cube amp. They're relatively cheap for the unbelievably good sound that comes off them, not too mention that distortion is pretty intense for a built in effect. And there's a lot of them.
