Do they really need human and canine/feline/hyaenid ears? Particularly when these superfluous chimaeric pinnae are clearly non-functional given that there is only (one should hope) telencephalon where additional middle and inner ear structures would be required for functionality. Their rapid growth would also indicate poor structural integrity, indeed, the wind speeds they would have to endure would surely rip them off, undifferentiated dermal tissue they would be composed of, without any sensation of pain. There is also a remarkable lack of hair loss associated with the trauma subjected to the scalp for this transformation, and very rapid fur growth, which is particularly improbable.

And the distortion of the spinal column for the other entirely unnecessary and vestigial feature is particularly troublesome, if indeed that much of a change is even able to be appropriated.


And I have serious reservations about the lift-to-weight ratio of those tiny rotary blades on the ankles, especially since there is a conspicuous lack of any motor or similar driving device on account of there being leg anatomy in the way.

And Newton's laws, anyone? I notice that none of the guns illicit any sort of recoil which, given that they are not in contact with the ground, should propel them backwards and disrupt their flight patterns significantly. Similarly, the rocket launchers, which fire rockets that are self-propelled, should have no recoil at all, and yet...

Basically, it's alternate universe 1939. A bunch of strange alien things called Neuroi have invaded and already destroyed most of Europe.

The magic powers of Witches are the key, so those clever scientists invented the Striker Unit, a magic-amplifying plane-leg weapon. Or something. Witches manifest ears and tails when they use their magic, so as long as they're in the amplifier, they tend to have them. Witches produce a magical field that tends to protect them from getting knocked around too much, also the Striker Unit makes them strong enough to hold and swing those guns around with no recoil.

"Strike Witches takes place in an altered version of Earth, ravaged by the Neuroi. Several large pieces of Earth's landmasses have been obliterated (with Europe and Africa being the most intact), drastically altering the appearance of the planet in comparison to its real-life counterpart. The nations which the main characters hail from are also based on major world powers of the time albeit with different names and altered territories.

The Witches are the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, all of them are young adults who are also fighter aces, except for the younger ones who were scouted for their magic power. Also, they're all named after real-world historical Aces.

To their credit, the animators also go out of the way to show that almost all other girls who aren't old people also bare their legs, so I've shrugged it off as a social thing and now it doesn't affect me anymore.
