Why is this news?

Posted 02-04-2012 at 03:09 PM by DarkHoodness
Every year an article like this appears in the news:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16891596

It's like we hadn't seen snow before or something! I mean it's winter - Doesn't the weather normally do this sort of thing around this time of year? Sure, some parts up north have -12 C but in most places it's only as low as -1 C and not at all unusual.

I mean I can understand news coverage of the cold snap over central Europe right now since temperatures there are a lot lower than they should be in parts, but I'm fed up of us Brits living up to our stereotype every time we get a tiny bit of snow.

It's like here, one snowflake hits the ground and everyone is all "OMG, SNOW! STOP EVERYTHING!" and our infrastructure stops working. Yet in Europe during a normal winter, the same amount of snow hits the ground and barely anyone bats an eyelid while everything carries on as normal.

The hell is wrong with us? And why has it always been that way?

It's because the UK isn't guaranteed to have snow every year like Sweden or Canada so therefore when it does come we don't expect it and as a result we are not prepared to deal with it.

Tonight I was supposed to out with a friend, but he couldn't make it because his bus was stopped and I didn't want to go just incase the trains stopped running and I ended up stranded.

May sound silly, but I didn't want to take the risk of getting stuck because of the UK coming to a halt over a bit of snow.

I remember 2 years ago that my college was closed for 2 weeks because of snow... but of course they were just trying to cover their ass in this whole health and safety bollocks.

Maybe it's so the old people don't go walkees in the cold spell. All the same, a big who cares man? It's really not something to PMS over.

It does royally fuck up a lot of things though. Transport mostly.

The only good thing about it is that I get to throw Snowballs at people I don't like.

The question is, why does that happen in the UK, but hardly ever in Germany for example unless the conditions really are that extreme? When I was staying there during one winter there was a big snowfall and everything carried on pretty much as normal.

"We aren't prepared for it" and "it rarely happens" isn't that much of an excuse considering it's not uncommon here. So why aren't we prepared? And why does it always take us by surprise?

However maybe this year is an exception, and I'm sort of eating my words - Currently in south-east UK we have 6 inches of snow, which is sort of uncommon since I've not seen it as thick as this here since I was a young child. Tonight/this morning I've had to clear it twice off my guttering and power cables since they were bowing under the weight a bit - While I'm also glad I don't have to go anywhere, there's no way I can cycle through this.

Yeah, if I lived there it'd be a common occurrence and I'd make sure my guttering and power cables would withstand the weight of 6 inches of snow.

I guess that's the same problem with our infrastructure - Except an inch or two of snow here is a common occurrence, yet we treat it like it isn't. And that's what annoys me.

The same thing happens in Denmark. The infrastructure is a little better equipped to deal with snow though.

You live in England, DH, this should be enough of a reason as to why we never learn year after year. At first I didn't want it to snow quite vehemently but now if it gets me an extra day off from sixth form then let it bring the country to a stand still for all I care.

YES! Our fine countries inability to deal with a few inches of snow, even though in the south every single road is clear, means that Sixth Form is shut today. Thank you Cameron and your array of impractical, over paid fucktards, and thank you, health and safety shit heads!

Now I'm off to literally drink my body weight in coffee.
