Oh, Christ (Continued)

It came. Animated Robin Hood DVD. He's had us watch it twice. I just took it the first time, the second time, I had to make myself something to eat, so that got me out of the second half. It's our turn to relax now, so we don't have to watch it again until tomorrow.

The film itself was not that good. I hated having to witness the Americanisation of wonderful English folklore (especially the American accents the characters bore, but if I'm honest, I'd rather that than poor English imitations, though I disliked the reference to American football in one particularly silly scene). In fact, it felt pretty uneasy in some areas. There was one scene in which a child tried to retrieve his arrow from the castle garden (or whatever the area was - possibly the bailey. I don't know much about castles), and he ended up playing around with Marian and some fat anthropomorphic chicken. The things he came out with, it was truly a Peep Show-cringeworthy scene.
On the topic of goings-on with Maid Marian, she was unbelievably 2D in this (as were quite a few of the characters - in fact, I can't name a real complex one off my head).

I'll admit, the portrayal of the Sheriff of Nottingham was different to what I expected, and so that was interesting to see, but it wasn't that great, either. Prince John had more of a presence, and there was no Guy of Gisbourne at all.

Even I could see where there had been corner-cuttings in animation, and I never really watched Disney so much. I swear that the rodent playing the drums at one point (which, as Robin Hood is medieval folklore, I'm sure is an anachronism) was actually part of a similar sequence from Snow White, only he wasn't Dopey.

All in all, it wasn't quite as bad as I expected, but I didn't really like it so much either. No worse than the recent TV series though. I'm considering showing him Mel Brooks' "Men in Tights" (not exactly hilarious, but it passes the time), but I think he might be a bit young.

And you should be proud of me for not moaning about the anthropomorphic animals. I was so tempted to.

Disney re-uses dance scenes an awful lot, two seconds and I'll find the video.

I always knew Disney used some of the same templates, but damn...

I can sort of see the value of the last couple though.

Traditional animation is very expensive, and believe it or not, their studios operated on a shoestring.

Before they used computers, or just in general?

Probably both, but more so before. Each of those famous Disney classics saved the studio many times.

No he didn't. The masters of Wikipedia did it much, much earlier.

Apparently, Robin Hood was done on a small budget
, even by Disney terms and the animation had to cut corners here or there.
