The Happening of Spore

Posted 07-03-2008 at 03:53 AM by Havoc
Alright! First things first. I have just returned from the theater where I saw The Happening. The first thing I thought when I saw the trailer for The Happening was that the plot could be okay, depending on the underlying story. You can make or break a movie with the ending and final role out of plot elements.

So what happens in The Happening (ha ha)? The movie starts in Central Park, New York City. Everyone is busy with their daily lives when suddenly everyone at once just stops and starts killing them selfs. They stop dead in their track, mumble some rubbish, start walking backwards and then find some (most of the time) hilarious way of killing them selfs. These people seem to have no control over what they are doing and it's therefor deemed to be a chemical terrorist attack, hitting the heart of New York City. Top university professors come up with the idea that chemicals are able to make the body's natural survival instinct do a complete 180, making the person want to kill them selfs as fast as possible.

Later in the movie some nutcase decides that it could be plants releasing deadly chemicals that kill whatever is around them. While at first you'll probably think 'haha thats a good one, now what would the real reason behind all this be?', you'll soon discover that the entire story revolves around this idea. Plants are sick of the human species and decide to whipe us all out using the most hilarious way they could think off.

As if this poor story line isn't bad enough, the movie is crawling with bad actors like Zooey Deschanel who takes first price by doing some of the worst acting I have ever seen in modern day movies. My god the kid actually outacts her!

There's a lot more bad things that could be said about this movie, such as bad directing, camera shots from the 70's, lack of music, suspense buildup at entirely wrong moments, ect. But in the end there's only one thing to blame for crap like The Happening, The Village and Signs. They are all equally crap and happen to be written by one and the same person: Manoj Night Shyamalan. The last halfway decent movie this guy wrote was The Sixth Sense and after that it was downhill very fast. Mister Shyamalan, this is a request from movie lovers all around the world, please stop writing movies and if you must, stop directing them yourself. YOU SUCK AT IT.

I'm sorry for such a direct and to the point review of a movie, but crap like The Happening doesn't really deserve my attention. I just want to warn all you people that it's crap and that you shouldn't waste you're perfectly good money on it.

Spore

Moving on to happier matters, the demo for Spore has hit the interwebs and I must say it's very addictive. The creature creator is a wonderfull tool for all creative minds to create and form whatever you please. The demo of course has a lot of locked content which will only be available in the full game which is set to be released in September. But none the less the demo is very enjoyable indeed. When I get the time to make something decent I'll post it on here for you all to see.

I rather like Zooey Deschanel. I will concede, however, that she's not consistently great. She's a bit like Woody Harrelson - fantastic in the right role but otherwise totally dodgy.

Zooey Deschanel was great in Hitchhiker's. Not seen her in anything else though, so I can't judge her other work.

I quite liked Signs, the last half an hour of the movie was suitably epic.

Me too. I swear I almost shat myself when I saw the alien's hand sliding up that coal shoot.

The Sixth Sense, Signs, and The Village are the only movies of his that I've seen. Lady in the Water looked pretty cool; based on the way Havoc described The Happening, it just sounds like a big rip-off of Alfred Hitchock's The Birds. Plus, a number of people told me it's terrible.
