Think of the Children!

Posted 09-11-2009 at 06:34 AM by OANST
Today was Abbey's first day of school. It was pretty hard to stand there and watch as she was taken down the hall to her class. April and I were having some serious separation anxiety, as were many of the other kids. There were about a dozen kids that were just bawling.

Then there's Abbey. She just smiles, waves, says bye, and walks down the hall.

I don't quite know how to describe how I feel about this.

She's confident and unafraid of unfamiliar situations. Encourage it. You don't want her to become a crippled sociophobe like me.

Exactly what BM said. Though then again I was confident when young. So basically always encourage her to be confident all the time.

April just picked her up. When she did, the teacher told her that Abbey sort of wandered off during recess to do her own thing. No big deal. But while April was telling me about it over the phone I hear Abbey screaming in the background "Don't tell Daddy! Don't tell Daddy!", and then she starts loudly bawling. I told April to give her the phone, so that I could tell her that I wasn't mad at her, and that she will know better next time. She refuses to take the phone and just starts crying harder. I hear her asking April in between sobs if I'm mad. April just tells her that she doesn't know, and that she should just talk to me.

Anyway, I finally got her on the phone, and calmed her down.

Why was she punished or something for not hanging around the other kids? And just wondering, is this preschool or did she go somewhere earlier?

This is Kindergarten, and no, she did not go to preschool. This was her first day of school ever.

She wasn't punished, no. Maybe scolded a bit.

She was scolded for not socializing to the point of being afraid of your reaction?

No. She just thought that she would be in trouble for some reason. We had talked the night before about how she has to be extra good and do everything that her teacher says. That was probably what set it off.

I am confident you'll raise her to be a fine young lady.

I mean, already. Damn, why can't all children be like that. Make my visits to Wal-Mart more pleasant, though perhaps less amusing.
