Tall and Taller Studios

Whag'warn!

Just a little shout out and some shameless self-promotion here. Recently, a friend and I set up 'Tall and Taller Studios' to make a web-comic series. Our first series is 'Port Rice Avenue', set on a street in fictitious New York, the story follows two protagonists as they got about their lives. It's sort of a comedy really, or it tries to be, it's pretty random as well. If you have a Smackjeeves account, giving our comic a fav would be much appreciated.

Not sure if that will link you or not, so just in case:

Hope you enjoy! =)

It is better now. But now I have to scroll down to see the pages

And there's some mess with the bottom of the page

Best of luck to ya. I don't really see much appeal, but at least isn't a bunch of stick figures covered in massive amounts of text. Which is more or less what my comic would be like. It might also just be me who isn't the targeted audience for the humor. Or this is just its first tentative steps.

Whatever the case, I hope this goes well for you.

Oddey: Have you ever gone back to the first few strips of your favourite webcomics? They always take a little while to find their voice.

Use a digital font for your text rather than handwriting it.

Also, panel composition! http://mokoudraws.tumblr.com/post/18...i-just-want-to

And get a URL and your own hosting at some point too, it’ll boost your credibility.

Yeah the site design is to be desired. For people struggling with the text use CTRL+mousewheel

Thanks for the feedback. The text will be updated in the future to make it easier to read. I'll relay the information back to the artist as soon as possible.

To answer some of the specific questions some people had,

It might also just be me who isn't the targeted audience for the humor. Or this is just its first tentative steps.

Right, due to some constraints we actually had to change the initial idea, this was more of a test than anything so in many senses, yes it is a tentative first non-canon strip. It's supposed to be a bit random and silly, it will make more sense to a rather niche audience on another site actually who will understand this more because of our actual IRL personalities.

The site has since been updated again to a very simply layout, I don't actually like this one as much as I did the second design but it's much more functional so I'll allow it to grow on me. As I've said, I'll speak to the artist about the text, and a note about the humour, as I've said, it's somewhat niche, though it will follow a silly sort of style rather than anything too in-depth or thought out. I'll make a point of saying that we run this as a bit of escape from the monotony and sometimes upset in our lives, it's just a bit of fun and a way for us to have a good laugh with each other while we make the strips.

Also, panel composition!

Thankee!

I can't tell if the characters are copy and pasted with new mouths drawn in or your pal can only draw shrugging bored nerds.

I couldn't read the text at all, either.

As far as the website design goes, put the navigation buttons at the top. I can live with scrolling for the comic, but not something that essential.

Looks okay. You're at least accomplishing more here than every single person in this blog who complained about it. The humor/art style isn't really my thing, but I'm also not a big webcomics guy.

From one artist to another; keep at it. Do things that are 100% you, even if the majority hates it. That's no way to make money, but integrity means a lot more. At least to me.

Thanks guys. To be honest I think the artist took it a bit worse than I did, I know what they can be like but he sort of took it quite personally. =/

Any way, the next comic is under the works and I didn't actually have any say in this one so if it's a massive success maybe I should get out and let him go on un-abated. XD

Well I think constructive criticism is always good. Artist's style and quality gets better and better, just tell him to keep doing what he's doing

Any good artist knows to take criticism on the chin. I don't know what he's so butthurt about, as most of the comments made in this blog have been about the site design, not the art. Unless he's responsible for that as well. In which case, he could benefit from a few graphic design courses.

Nah he's just a bit touchy. The site was generic I think, it's since been fixed as far as I'm concerned.

the comics could definitely benefit from more colour, and maybe some backdrops for setting but that stuff isnt really required in webcomics (i guess? Not a big webcomic buff either). there's room for improvement but you're off to a decent start

I approve of the fact you have responded well to criticism and actually changed the site so the comic is now actually readable.

It didn't really do much for me, but like Nate said, every webcomic takes time to find its feet. Especially given how constraining the format is. Just keep going.

Cheers, the next comics will have a story, to some extent, and will be more fleshed out in the details such as backgrounds. Due to time constraints, he isn't going to colour it, he did offer but I told him he needn't worry about it.

As long as the the writing is good you don't need colour, anyways.
