I have a mighty need

Posted 06-30-2014 at 09:25 AM by Job McYossie
I have a mighty need to play Munch's Oddysee. Like, I've been playing other games trying to get my mind off of it, the best I've done is some psyconauts, but Much is still there, looming over. I don't really remember much about it, so the need is partially curiosity. I COULD look up a let's play, but I wouldn't want to watch another one. (Unless of course Crashpunk did one, but that's because I've always watched his stuff.) I don't have it for Xbox, and my last 2 Xboxes died anyway. I have the cash to go and buy another copy, but I hear the 360 can't play the audio right and a eighth of my enjoyment for that game is probably Munch's voice. That, and I don't feel like having to buy the game again when I already bought it on PC.

I have tried so much to get the PC version to work. I'd gotten it to a near running point, where it wasn't crashing. But in spots the game runs too fast, like waaay too fast, and I end up flinging abe off the map and then the game crashes. I wish there was some way I could limit the FPS, because that seems to cause it, without just recording it with fraps.

Oddio though... still can't get over that great pun.

Have you tried messing with V-Sync to get it to work fast enough

there is no V-sync option, that was my first thought too.

You have V-sync options in your GPU drivers config panel too

Thanks. I had actually just come back here to say that that fixed my issue (or so it seems). Forcing Vsync is a really great fix so far. I just wish it was auto enabled so users didn't have to do it themselves.

I believe stock GPU driver V-sync setting is "ON, unless application requires otherwise"

Have fun with your Munch.

Nepsotic hates you already.

I have an Nvidia GeForce 550.

I'm having fun.

Don't care if people hate it, I can still manage to enjoy myself, and that's what I like in the end.

EDIT: Slog hadn't posted when I typed this.

You can't burn me, I'm magical damnit!

Despite how much everyone hates it I can still muster up the will to replay it once every so often. It’s not bad, really.

Well as Phylum said in a recent thread, it's playable.

I still have a hard time saying it's not bad, though, because objectively it is pretty bad.

I love how insistent you are on it being an objectively bad game, when a majority of the people here who were also disappointed by it will probably disagree with you.

Anyway you can't objectively say something is a "bad game". If you tried to classify anything as a good or bad game, you're immediately drawing a subjective line between the two.

If you had to put two criteria to it, it would be #1 playable and #2 fun. MO is both of those things, even if it got a bit tedious at times.

e: fucking typos man

I've been enjoying it. Game has quite a lot wrong with it. Like, s lot. But so does a lot of games I like, so... I think the game would be another tier more enjoyable if it had less bugs. I don't remember Abe being this fun to play in MO. I think I hated his gameplay before because it was far from what Abe should feel like. Munch is still not very fun to play though, just so annoying to hear him walk.

I never said bad games couldn't be fun geez

YOU UNDERESTIMATE HOW MANY BAD GAMES I ENJOY

I can back up my reasoning pretty well, but this is a topic beaten to death and back. I already know a lot of people disagree with me, but that's just a thing that happens if you say anything ever.

If you're not prepared to argue it out can you not throw words like this around then? Thanks.

Also I think you mean that you enjoy games you subjectively define as bad games.

Dude seriously get off my ass

The second anyone actually starts arguing something on here that's been argued a million times before everyone starts bitching and whining and no one's opinions change, the actual facts of the situation don't change, and instead all you have is a bunch of sore butts and spiteful bullshit that carries over from thread to thread and it's stupid and irritating lather rinse repeat

This time isn't going to be any different.

I think at this point we already know where one another stands on certain matters, and I think objectively, given the year this game came out, what OWI has shown it's capable of, what was promised, what was presented, how the game played, how the game was executed, how the story was executed, how the levels and mechanics were designed and implemented were all sub par at best.

If I were to take the game and ignore everything else OWI produced, and just compared it to other games that came out that time period, it would still be sub par at best.

If I took it and compared it to PSX 3D platforming games, it holds ground as far as gameplay goes, but the second you look at the overall design and aesthetics it starts falling short.

Any earlier than that, and there's no basis for comparison, so it couldn't really be deemed on the higher or lower end of that specific style of games.

Regardless of how good or bad the damn game is, though, I can see why people enjoy it and have fun playing it. That doesn't make it any better. After all, if something exists, someone out there is bound to enjoy it in some shape way or form.

My subjective opinion of the game is entirely fucking different.

To further elaborate, when I say the game is "objectively bad", imagine a scale with every single game on it in a nice little row. On the furthest end you have "games that are generally agreed to be pretty damn good, and are worth checking out" and on the other end you have "games that were executed poorly, were completely unenjoyable, and are not worth the time and effort to play". MO would be closer to the latter, but it's not so bad that no one could enjoy it, much less not be able to find good in it.

No, I fucking mean that no matter how you look at said "bad games" the general consensus is: "wow this game really is quite the pile of shit, isn't it"

Ok so if you average everyone's subjective opinions you can start to get some form of objective views. That's fair enough. But you also then have to consider that most people don't look at MO like that.

I can understand everyone having their own views. That's great. "I personally thing MO us an unplayable pile of shit" would be a good way to express that. Telling us that it's objectively a bad game is not.

Okay well I've seen people say exactly that and get attacked for it so what's the point in saying something I know I'd get attacked for that might not even be my actual opinion of the game itself (I did agree on it being playable, as a matter of fact)

I don't say shit purely for the sake of arguing

What I had said was my view didn't matter and I have a hard time calling a game that's there's overwhelming evidence is not in the "good" range of games a good game. Unfortunately, the majority of people who play MO, whether they're familiar with the other games OWI's produced or not, will likely deem the game not very good, okay, or flat out bad. The population of the forum? Yeah they don't count for the majority of people who've played/will play MO they count specifically for the population of the forum.

Or maybe we've just managed to run into and see people who all lean more towards one opinion or the other by pure coincidence and we're both wrong.

E- Actually digressing to the "I personally think..." bit, I specifically stated my personal opinion in the Who Gives a Shit thread on OD and you were kind of an ass about it even though it was supposed to be a discussion purely about individual opinion and why we felt that way

I'm not convinced you actually take that approach as a valid form of expression, and if you do it's specifically because it gives you the opportunity to shit all over someone.

All I said in the "Who Gives a Shit.." thread was that the phrasing of everything was needlessly antagonistic given that it was targeted at a forum full of Oddworld fans. I didn't disagree with anyone's opinions.

I don't think people lean towards it being a good game or a bad game. I think it sits in the middle, and that's probably why it's such a contentious issue.

Other people do state opinions about MO, but they don't try to pretend that they're objective. Read back to my post. That's all this was about.

Slog Bait's Avatar
You only stated that after an equally antagonistic post of your own and while the title can be read as antagonistic, nothing in the thread could have been unless you were looking for something to get exasperated over

I get that, but I was completely bypassing my subjective opinion of the game when I made that post. You seemed to immediately go to "the forum will disagree with you and that's not an objective opinion" then when I showed disinterest in debating it prodded me with a stick

I do need to find better words than good and bad though because they're such vague terms but other than that category dealie where you can put MO into the playable and fun categories, which can get needlessly complicated really fast, I can't think of any exact terms to describe it.

You're both objectively annoying.

I think the words SB is looking for are "relative failure". Regardless of someone's opinion on MO, it's demonstrably shallower than OWI intended.
