Avatar in a nutshell (spoilers inside)

Posted 01-03-2010 at 09:12 AM by AlexFili
I found this description from TV Tropes. It's so accurate.

"He's told that he has 3 months to convince the Na'vi to leave peacefully before action will be taken to move them. So he promptly does nothing about it and frolics in the woods for the entire 3 months. You could argue that he's earning their trust, but the fact remains that he still does nothing right up until the deadline. And no one so much as speaks up to him about it. At the last minute, when he's told in no uncertain terms, that he's waited so long to do anything that the dozers are coming the next day, making this his last chance to do something, he still doesn't do anything. Instead, he parties, boinks the Chief's Daughter and falls asleep. Without a word of the impending Dozer-Apocalypse. Very classy, Jake. Also bonus points for neither of his scientist buddies in avatar bodies doing anything to warn the tribe either during the entire time."

Added bold bits for lols.

Avatar story is full of holes, duh. Didn't ruin the experience for me, though.

I agree, only replace "Avatar story is" with "women are".

It's because he isn't able to 'speak' to the people before being one of them. Note when Sigourney Weaver tries to speak to their elder folk, they're all "You cannot speak here".

Doesn't take much thought.

He could still have told Neytiri.

However, it's possible that it was a deliberate plot point. There was about an hour of extra film that never made it to the theatrical release that most likely explained why he didn't tell them. Even when he found out about getting new legs he decided to keep going along with the program.

Because he was getting emotionally involved with the Na'vi! Come on, are you people even thinking?

Yay for extraneous cynicism. He was in the process of getting a new and better life. A richer culture, the ability to walk (and fly), and love. He knew he would've lost it all if he had revealed his "real" goal. He also already felt like he was on the verge of losing it all, what with the ostracization and life-threatening trials. Such circumstances, especially for someone who already felt betrayed by his own culture, would make anyone (except maybe Quartich) forget about their original priorities and just go with the flow.

I also don't understand how you were so forgiving of what New Moon lacked in plot but gave them credit for special effects and enjoyable characters and you can't be assed to let go of this movie's faults.

Yeah, Tvtropes is awesome and all but it's best to apply lots of salt and use your BRAIN when reading, especially with new releases as some people just love to think themselves critics.

new moon isn't really worth defending gabe, lol. don't you think? whereas with avatar it's a completely different kettle of fish: a good (if not simple) film, where people on the internet attack to seem contrary/smrat.

TVTropes is anti-self-discovery. The fun of half those things is enjoying them on their own merits, not by how you can categorize shit.

It's totally cool to agree with everything you read on TV Tropes and ED.

Avatar is still a brilliant film. However, the whole 'telling them at the last minute' thing just worked out really badly.

I'm not a huge fan of New Moon, but I actually enjoyed it. Particularly the CGI wolves. I think the Twilight series gets too much hate.

If you start off with the assumption that the director/writer knows what they are doing then you can solve most plot holes simply by thinking hard enough about it. Tvtropes even has it's own page for it.

Also I doubt anything but a small elite fan-dumb of tvt actually think that the beauty of a narrative is in its base ingredients.

What the hell are you talking about? The movie was slammed by critics of all shape and size for having crappy CG. Srs.

Well, gee. Maybe he should have told them 10 minutes into being accepted to their clan and we'd have a 30 minute movie on our hands. SOUNDS LIKE A REAL EPIC!
