University update Pt:1

Posted 10-10-2009 at 09:06 AM by Wings of Fire
It's been about a month now since I came back to Glasgow, so I figure that right now when I'm in the library trying to procrastinate over starting this goddamned lab report is the perfect opportunity to give y'all an update on the life and times of WoF.

Academically-wise so far I'm finding this year a shitload more enjoyable and involving than last year. I suppose that was because Freshers' Year is a kind of introduction year, I mean, it was great and all but the problem with introducing students to ALL the core concepts within two semesters is that there's so fucking many that you can only spend a week on each and then the exams come requiring slightly more than superfical knowledge on over 9000 concepts and you feel bleh. This time we have two and a half weeks on each area of psychology and about the same (abliet better spaced out across the calender) on philosophy, but I can't dwell on the two subjects I want to do because now it's time to have a little rant on the one I don't like.

Statistics.

It's not like I don't recognize the point of statistics see, even though the area of psychology I wish to spend the prime of my life working with has the same kind of relationship to statistics as the Employee's Lounge has to women I still aknowledge that it truly is useful for all psychologists to know the abstract concepts and scientific contexts they must perform their discipline within.

Problem is I has to do it twice.
Yeah, twice.

Firstly instead of selecting a subject I'm actually interested in for my second year I had to take Stats, otherwise no Psychology at honours, it's the easiest, lankest piece of shit subject I've ever sat through a lecture on. The course is specifically designed to be for Arts students taking psychology, so it's stats without maths (??) which means that MOST OF THE SHIT THEY TEACH ME IS THE SORT OF STUFF I DID AT FUCKING GCSE MATHS LEVEL.
Ahem.

That by itself isn't what's so damn infuriating, I mean it's a worthless subject, but it's a guarenteed fourty credits (Years worth of courses) and as long as I get a D in it (Yeah, like that's not going to happen) then I'm guarenteed a place in Honours Psychology. The real funny thing is that Psychology runs it's own module on stats within the course itself.

So.

Let's get this straight.

The Department is forcing me to take a subject I already know everything pertinent to my actual chosen subject for, and in exchange for taking that subject I had to give up one I wanted to do (Babai Introduction to Linguistics), on top of that the Department itself is running a ten lecture course on the exact same subject (With minor differences on how the material is presented) and I have to essay and exam questions on that too?

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...

Anyhoo I've spent too much time talking about this and you've spent too much time reading it. More on the social side of second year university soon including such amazing highlights as...
  • WoF gets drunk !Outside his bedroom!
  • WoF tries to cook sushi, shenannigans follow.
  • WoF joins the LGBT, is surprisingly at ease around lesbians.
  • WoF gets a schoolgirl crush*, will it all end in tears?

All this and more in the next exciting update to My Blog, stay tuned!
*That is, a crush like a schoolgirl, NOT a crush on a schoolgirl.

I sure hope this series manages to catpivate our minds and hearts like it did in its first season.

This one MAY have plot twists, I'm thinking of having a good death scene or two. Will take suggestions.

Hell what am I talking about, the last season had some serious plot twists, I wasn't a fan of the second act finale though. The writer for that episode needs to go die in a fire.

I told you that you would feel differently about that period once there was distance between you and it. But nooooo. You're the first person to ever experience heartbreak, and NO ONE UNDERSTANDS, AND IT WILL NEVER END, AND YOU WILL NEVER LOVE ANYONE AGAIN, AND.....

Did I go too far?

Meh, it's not like I couldn't joke about the event when it happened, I did actually have a bit of perverse fun constructing that poem and shaping my emotional reaction.

But yeah, I'm still deeply bitter about it, I still believe it shouldn't have happened and I still sort of have feelings for her... but I'm ready to move on.

Sushi does need cooking. You think the rice comes like that out of the packet?

I liked the blunderbuss approach to topics in the first year, spending two hours on the formation of the solar system, the next two on the mouths of polychaete worms and then on to messing around with genetically modified E. coli was fun. When it gets too focussed and specific I feel like I'm missing out on all the other fields.

Statistical analysis in biology is frikkin' hard though. Not so much the calculations, which are easy enough if stupidly long-winded, but rather figuring out which of the 20 or so completely different forms of analysis would be best or at all appropriate to any particular circumstance.

The facepalmometer reached its peak a couple of weeks ago when we were told we'd be moving on from mean median and mode to stranger measures of average that we've likely never seen before.

Namely THE INTERQUARTILE RANGE!
The one...I was kind of doing at GSCE Maths level...

Have you touched on standard deviation yet?

Actually in fairness that was one of the only non-trigonometry things I didn't understand at GCSE level.

And yes we have, the computer has a button that does it all for us
