Praise Odin
For it is Odin's Day. And by that I mean Wednesday.
This is the abridged version.
According to the Volsung's saga, Odin placed a sword in a tree, from which it could be removed only by the true king.
Enter Sigmund.
Sigmund withdrew the sword from the tree and with it reigned as king for many years, until he fell in battle, the sword shattered.
Years later, and Sigurd son of Sigmund found himself in the unenviable position of having to face the dragon Fafnir. But the only sword capable of slaying the beast was his father's broken blade. So it was reforged for him.
Sigurd laid in wait for Fafnir, and slew him from below. He bathed in the dragon's blood, which made him invunlinerable everywhere except, oddly, his shoulder blades.
After many more years Sigurd was slain in battle, presumably via his scapula. He was award a full Viking funeral pyre, and you know what you get a lot of from funeral pyres, don't you? Ash!
The pre-Christian Norse would mark themselves on Odin's day with ash to grant themselves Odin's protection in battle: the ash represented Sigurd's ash, which bore the power of Fafnir's blood. And when they raided the rest of Europe, they brought this practice with them.
So this fine Ash Odin's Day, give praise to Odin, ruler of Asgard, and certainly don't participate in any great battles without invoking his power.
Be wary of those who clearly have, however. If they consider you a worthy foe, that black smudge might be the only warning you get.
