Biopsy (Dakota Update)

So we got the biopsy back for Dakota. Apparently its cancer.

The doctors say its either Spindle Cell Sarcoma, Fibrosarcoma, or Malignant Melanoma. All three are big bads, have a poor prognosis (afflicted dogs generally only survive a year after surgery), and are resistant to chemo.
Given what I know of them, its most likely Malignant Melanoma, but they need more tests to be sure. Malignant Melanoma is one of those cancers that can be undetectable in blood work and x-rays.

Dakota's prognosis is "guarded" which is better than "poor" but isn't good enough to be happy about. Dakota appears very happy, healthy, and comfortable so I'm trying not to be completely pessimistic. I'm reluctant to think positively, however, because every time I do things just get worse.

I'm sorry if you've mentioned this before, but what kind of dog is she?

He's actually a boy, but everyone thinks he's a girl (Dakota is kind of a girly name).

He's a big ol' German Shepherd Dog, although we've always suspected he has some Chow Chow in him. Considering Chow are predisposed to those types of cancer, he probably is part Chow.

Awwww.

When I was younger I had this Plush "big" beanie baby of the Husky. It was called Dakota but I pronounced it 'Dakato'. Not sure where it went :/ .

I saw on the news the other day that dogs get better cancer treatment than humans, because the experimental drugs that have been proven effective* but haven't gone through full human testing are available for dogs.



*Or whose effectiveness is still being tested.
