England update

I'm currently in England and loving it.

The flight over was hell. I slept for 4 hours during a 23 hour flight. The seats were uncomfortable and I had no leg room. I relied on movies and tv shows to pass time. I saw Norwich as we were touching down. Did you see me waving, Will?

We're staying with relatives in London right now. It's a lovely area. The houses are charming and there are local shops just around the corner.

The amount of independent shops I've...

England!

I'm going to be flying out to England a week from today.

Our plane leaves on the 3rd at 11am and we arrive in London at 6am the same day. I'm going to be jet-lagged as fuck. I'm really not looking forward to that part. Other than that, it all sounds as if it will be really good.

We're mainly going over there to visit family. We're also going to head over to see Stonehenge, visit Bath, go to a castle with a maze (my dad and I have always wanted to go in a huge maze,...

Big flutes

Today I had another great musical experience that I was lucky to be invited to.

A flute teacher I know (the one that lent me the contrabass flute for a week) flew the big flute specialist Peter Sheridan over from Melbourne the other day. She flew him over with the intention of him giving a bass flute lesson to her and her friend. She contacted me by email about having a lesson, too.

She decided that, while Peter Sheridan was over, she may as well put on a concert,...

Funky jazz

I've spent the last 3 days been at a nation-wide Bigband competition. It's been fucking amazing.

Schools from all over Australia come down to Mt. Gambier (a city built around a dormant volcano) and either play or listen to jazz the whole time. Naturally after so long I'm all jazzed out.

On Friday, we met at school at 8 in the morning and started on our 6 hour bus ride down from Adelaide. It was horrible. After arriving at Mt. Gambier, we had about 10 minutes to go into...

Stomach pains

I'm sick. Again. I spend half of my time fucking sick. I'm fucking sick of it.

My latest ailment is a constant discomfort in my stomach. Most of the time, I also get jabbing pains. I've barley eaten in the last few days and I've felt really awful.

This stacks atop my ongoing tiredness which is completely inexplicable and annoyingly persistent. I made it 3-4 weeks into this term (we're now in week 10) before I started to get noticeably tired.

I went...

Sweltering

It was fucking hot here yesterday. I believe the temperature climbed as high as 42oc in the shade. It always gets this hot around this time of year and it's awful. All you do all day is sit around and suffer. You don't feel like eating anything and people get headaches and upset stomachs en masse.

There's no airconditioning in my house. We rely on a fan and 2 pathetic evaporative air conditioners to keep cool. One of these air coolers is in our main room and the other is...

Well…

…is what I'm feeling now.

Over the last 11 or so weeks I've been constantly ill. It started with a virus. I was still quite capable of going to scool, so I did. I then got worse an delevoped bronchitis.

After a few weeks on antibiotics, my bronchitis had gone. I still felt bad; I was run down after my illness.

Several weeks later I was well enough to return to school. After a few days I was ill again. I went to the doctor and discovered I had bronchitis...

Music lessons

The three in our lesson group walked into our lesson today. The teacher said:
"Today, we'll be doing some quartet playing."
"There are only 3 of us!" exclaimed one of my peers.
"Including the teacher..." Replied the other.
The teacher continued, "we'll play these... Oh, there's a soprano sax part. I'll just get one of you tenors to play it." (I am one of the 2 tenors.)
"I want to play a soprano..." Said the first of my peers to speak.
"I've wanted to play...

Saxophones.

I just played my alto for the first time all year after being assigned a tenor at the end of last year. It was really cool I thoroughly enjoyed myself. After playing my way through various clichés I'd heard recently (featuring, but not limited to, "Who Can it Be Now" and "You're More Than Fair") I moved onto my dads old rock and roll book. I spent my time getting acquainted with still more clichés.

The alto now seems weightless after I've been lugging my tenor around....
