This is true, but even writing 'GEORGE BUSH SUX DICK' on a piece of paper in the ballot booth is in some way conveying your thoughts to the nation, I've always thought the majority of Liberal doctrines are half baked philosophies that contradict themselves all the time.

Of course compare this to Right Wing philosophies which are built on a foundation of fear and lies and it's easy to see who wins.

Nah, I'm going to have to agree with Max on this one. There have been times where I actually didn't care about voting; state elections where both parties are as bad as each other. Sure, it's not good to have disenfranchised voters who stay home because they're too lazy, but it's even worse if those people go in to a booth and write 1,2,3,4,5.

Everyone in Australia should have their say on who is elected. Compulsory voting is the means to this end - my stance is simple.

I'd rather have them vote for anyone, than not vote at all. That being said, I don't believe people actually go in and submit any random order - the Pirate Party would have surely been elected if that were the case. I imagine those that don't particularly care will vote blindly for one of the major parties (Labor, Liberal, Greens, and (sadly) perhaps Family First).

As for the idea of it going against the philosophy of democracy - I don't see where you're coming from.

Compulsory voting is bizarre. The vote of a person who really doesn’t care holds the same weight as a person who willingly voted? That skews the results as much as ‘If you don’t vote for us [major party], X [major party] will get in. Y [minor party] stands no chance, so don’t waste your vote.’ What thoroughly bizarre and manipulative ways of polling the nation’s political preferences.
