Pope condemns love of money, power, possessions.

It's "pagan," like everything the catholic church disapproves of. "A modern-day plague."

“Has not our modern world created its own idols?... [have people] imitated, perhaps inadvertently, the pagans of antiquity?”

:
Paraphrasing from the New Testament, Benedict decried “insatiable greed” and said “the love of money is the root of all evil.”

“Have not money, the thirst for possessions, for power and even knowledge, diverted man from his true destiny?” the pope asked.

Benedict blasted modern society’s thirst for these new “pagan” idols as a “scandal, a real plague.”

The pope urged the faithful to “shun the worship of idols. Do not tire of doing good!”’
This was proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI in a sermon in Paris on Saturday, far away from his home in the Vatican where his words would have visual aids accompanying their hollowness.

Bloody hell. Are popes really hypocritical lying bastards, or genuinely out of contact with reality?

Both, so if the thirst for knowledge is not man's true destiny, then what is?

The surrender of our money, power and possessions to our religious leaders so that we may die in ignorance and poverty while they revel in money, power and their possessions?

But all that grandeur is in service of his god. What he's criticising is, essentially, people putting their priorities on self-aggrandisement over helping others or living a spiritual life.

Which is about as hypocritical as one man can get.

He chastises self-aggrandising while living in a mansion practically made out of gold. Sure, he doesn't need to pursue wealth, but only because he's got most of it already. He wants people to help others while his own campaigns contribute to overpopulation and the unchecked spread of HIV, causing millions of deaths, and actively opposes scientific research that could and has led to amazing scientific breakthroughs. He wants people to live a spiritual life, primarily by controlling their sex lives. He opposes idolatry while at the head of a church worshipping idols of Mary and who knows how many saints, while existing as a living idol himself.

Did I mention the level of opulence he lives in? I keep expecting him to whip off his cloak and announce that the papal office has been an elaborate parody all these years.

You're looking at his church, which is a place of wonder and worship, not his personal residences.

Not arguing with that point.

He wants people to live a spiritual life, primarily by controlling their sex lives.

I would dispute the word 'primarily' in there. The sex lives bit is just the most controvertial.

He opposes idolatry while at the head of a church worshipping idols of Mary and who knows how many saints, while existing as a living idol himself.

Yeah, Jews tend to have a giggle at that one.

Yuh. What I said before.
