Big Blog Fridays #6 - Peculiar Pronunciations

Hello everybody, I am TheManFromMudos, and I'm back again with another of Friday's Big Blogs. Now today, I'd like to talk to you, believe it or not, about the mis-pronunciation of some words within the Oddworld universe. The example I'm going to use is the word 'Mudokon', as I believe it's probably the most difficult word for non-Oddworld fans to pronounce on first sight.

Now, as you will likely already know, the word 'Mudokon' is usually pronounced as either 'Muh-dock-un' or 'Moo-dock-un' when it appears in official Oddworld media. But, not surprisingly, within my closest dozen or so friends, not one of them has ever heard of Oddworld at all. So when a word like 'Mudokon' is presented to them, things get pretty interesting. I've heard all sorts, believe me. 'Muh-duck-un','Muh-doh-k'un', 'Mud-uh-con. The list goes on, and even extends to the names of other Oddworldian species (Can you believe one of my friends thought that 'Vykker' was pronounced the same as 'vicar'?).

So, my big question for you today is this: Does anyone you know have a strange way of pronouncing words like 'Mudokon' and 'Vykker'? Or perhaps you yourself sometimes have a slip of the tongue every now and then, the odd 'Scarab' intead of 'Scrab' (another common mistake)? Let me know your thoughts, and I'll see you in the next Big Blog Friday.

I can't be the only one who originally misheard, thus misspoke, "Steef" as "Steve," can I?

Well, Vlam, I must confess I'm pressed for discussion points at the minute. But don't worry, as soon as I find the perfect topic, Big Blog Fridays will be great once again!

I’ve known friends who pronounce ‘Mudokon’ as ‘muu-dough-kuns’, and it’s kinda annoying but you can’t really police their speech.

MrsKJJ calls scrabs "prancers", paramites "skips", and slogs "scratches".

While I'm here, I'd like to know why y'all capitalise the names of Oddworld's species. They aren't proper nouns. For example, you wouldn't write: "The Dog and the Cat chased each other."

For the record, I'm not being pedantic, I just want to know the thought-process.

kjjcarpenter, I don't know, to be honest. I think it might be because I'm so used to seeing the names within the Oddworld universe, where the words are usually entirely capitalised. I guess it's more a case of decapitalising the rest of the word rather than capitalising the first letter.

Lorne would be proud. Our decapitalisation efforts must continue!

:
These names refer as much to a race of people as a biological species, and are comparable to terms like Americans, Japanese, Phanariotes, or Norvicensians. This is especially important if the race’s name is the same as its position in society.
This seems erroneous. The equivalent would be Mudanchee/Mudomo/Magog Cartel, etc.

I think the more reasonable answer to KJJ’s query is that these (Scrabs, Paramites etc) are fictional species, and because of that there’s a desire to recognize fictional nouns separately from existing species nouns. That’s not a hard and fast grammatical rule, but seems to be the accepted method in fantasy and science fiction.

I'm with Kjj on that one. That rule doesn't seem to make any Senze.
