Big Blog Fridays #3 - Three-Legged Freaks

Posted 02-10-2017 at 07:16 AM by TheManFromMudos
Hi guys, it's TheManFromMudos here, and this week I'd like to talk about something which has been clearly hinted at in Oddworld Inhabitants' latest teaser image. Yes, it is the possibility of Vykkers featuring in Oddworld: Soulstorm. Now, whether you liked Munch's Oddysee or not, you can't deny that the new creatures it gave us (particularly Vykkers and Interns) were an insightful addition to the franchise. In fact, alongside Glukkons and Paramites, the Vykkers are definitely a contender for my personal favourite Oddworldian species.

So, naturally when I heard the news that we may see the Vykkers recreated in Soulstorm's own darker, more serious tone, I was... excited, to say the least. After all, Vykkers are almost synonomous with the words 'torture' and 'suffering', aren't they? It makes perfect sense to me that the Vykkers were the true mastetminds behind Soulstorm Brew (The Glukkons couldn't well have done it, what with them wandering around with their hands in their shoes all the time, could they?) But, just how important the Vykkers are to Soulstorm's tale remains to be seen for the moment.

That brings me to today's question, which is this: Do you think the Vykkers are going to play an integral role in the events of Oddworld: Soulstorm? Will we be able to see, interact with, and perhaps even possess them in game? Or will they be nothing more than a shameful plug, a quick reference to one of Oddworld Inhabitants' past titles? Let me know what you think.

I don't have an opinion one way or the other.

Thanks for listening.

I think we might see them in cutscenes relating to where Brew comes from, but I doubt they’ll feature in the actual gameplay.

I do hope that they’re portrayed a little better in Soulstorm – in MO it felt like they took a good creature design and passed it off to some really uninteresting writers. Humphrey and Irwin are really boring, and we don’t get to really learn anything about them except they make forgettable pharmaceuticals. Doc in SW is pretty two-dimensional as well.

I really hope they show up, they were one of the only Oddworld races to legitimately creep me out, and Soulstorm is starting to look pretty darn creepy in its own right.

I have an opinion, and that is that I agree with what Manco has said here.

But I think he meant "one-dimentional"

I kinda hope if they bring in vykkers they change their voices a bit, make them a little scurrier.

The eery high pitch is OK, but the actual delivery was too cartoonish. They weren’t as creepy as they should have been.

Huh well, I pretty much agree with Mango. Though, I wouldn't mind if Vykkers were featured in some secret levels as enemies(we never did find out what was in those Vykkers lab doors) and I'm hoping for some really creepy cutscenes with these creatures. Heck of a lot of stuff was cut from exoddus but today leaves room for some new story direction, refreshed awesome stuff, new angels and what not. Won't know really until late this year and I'm excited about what will emerge

... whoa dude. Whoa, that's racist :u

Anyway, The Vykers will most likely be there in some form or another, even if it's just a background thing. If you ask me, the Vykers probably came up with the idea to use Mudokon tears and how to extract them as a main ingredient.

Couldn't agree more. Nothing says "Vykker" quite like extracting and profiting from pure suffering.

Also why are we using spoilers

There's probably a Vykker pill for that somewhere. Amnesiac in a Can?

Anyway, speaking of Vykkers, I wouldn't mind them bringing back both the animooos they experimented on as well as some of the critters seen with Stranger's Wrath as ambient animoos. If we ever see Fuzzles again I sincerely hope they're more like their Stranger counterparts, because fuck those little furballs of MO. The "oh so innocent but very rabid and mega dangerous MEMEM EEE MEEE MEE MEE MEH MEEEEE" gets old fast.

Also re: brew being a Vykker invention

I think that's not giving the glukkons enough credit. I can guarantee that Soulstorm Brew as a product was a wholey glukkon product, but I'm sure it utilized vykker technology to produce it. Like, entirely speculation of course, but it isn't a stretch to believe the Tear X-Tractors were a vykker experiment to try and figure something else out, like how a lot of our inventions were originally created for other purposes but made their way into another common usage. Then some over eccentric artistic glukkon thought it'd be a great idea to use one of the extractors to squeeze out an ingredient that could be used in his beverages. I highly doubt the brew master only brewed Soulstorm Brew, I'm sure he had other beverages in his arsonal. It's just clear Brew was his best and most prized product, is all.

It'd be kind of crudy to assume every glukkon just rose to the positions they did like Lulu. You have to have a pretty solid idea of what product or service you're planning to sell is going to be before you jump into a business. I'm sure ideas have been stolen from the vykkers before, but I don't think that's the case with Soulstorm Brewery.

I never said the Vykkers invented it. I meant the Vykkers probably came up with one of the ingredients in a collaborative effort. They're more likely to have thought up the idea of the tears.

Also, no one stole anything from anyone. There is clear evidence that the Vykkers had a lab in the brewery building at some point but it got condemned. Maybe they moved offices?
