Drama queen. I hate literally everything. April Ludgate is my spirit animal.

[Edit 13 Oct 2017] I just realized how edgy my blog description is but it's funny so I'll leave it there lmao

So I went to Dreamhack

Posted 11-02-2015 at 05:24 AM by FrustratedAssassin
Dreamhack was hosted this year in Romania, so I went to see the CS:GO matches. The final was awesome, loved the onstage explosions when the bomb exploded in the game, bought merchandise and took lots of selfies. I even sent a selfie to my sister and she said I look like a girl which felt pretty damn amazing.

10/10 I'd go again.

I'm still angry with Dreamhack for dropping Quake Live from their esports tournaments. Kids these days don't appreciate real games grumble grumble.

But Quake Live went to Steam, and it's no longer free or OSindependent. Afaik they also cleared all ranks etc. Maybe that's why.

QL lost multiplatform support and launched on Steam in 2014, and the latest update which has been a huge pool of misinformation (the update which added the price and cleared stats) was only in the last week. Dreamhack dropped QL tournaments at the end of 2013.

For the record QL dropped multi-OS support because the browser plugin system it used was dropped by Firefox and Chrome, and the dev team consists of 2 people who aren't Linux/OSX developers. The people that own id don't give enough fucks to pay someone to port it, so it's stuck as Win only for now.

The clearing of stats and stuff is because id literally no longer support the game. It all runs on Steamworks through user hosted servers now. It's literally the best thing to ever happen to the game and I'm working on some cool ideas that were never possible before for game queuing. The price tag was funny, because I'd been in contact with the devs and testing the new versions since August, and I didn't know about the price until after the official launch happened and the price was slapped on. Everyone who had it in their library before (which is lots of people, most of who never played the game) can keep it free.

Play it! Poland has a good community. Now is a good time to play, lots of regulars are really excited by the latest update and are active. Big changes are coming!

I played it, unfortunately not on steam. I can't play it anymore and I'm certainly not giving them so much monee just to play again

Yeah, I'm hoping for a sale over Christmas so people like you get back into it. Hopefully we'll have all kinds of fancy matchmaking and proper game queues sussed out by then

Dreamhacks cool. Theyve been pretty supportive of speedruns lately often hosting marathons there.

Speedruns? Really? Huh. I had no idea they do that, or I'd've totally looked for them. Maybe it has to do something with the fact that I only went on the last day because I didn't really feel like going.

I had a shit week last week and I pretty much only snapped out of it on Sunday, thankfully. I'd've hated myself so much if I'd've missed the final.

Quake Live is the most active. Reflex is also fun, and if you're prepared to sit in IRC it's easy to find games in most places too.

If you're feeling hardcore there's probably some QuakeWorld, if you go to the right IRC channels. QW is definitely more of a European thing though, and I think you're American? In the US I'm pretty sure some people still play NetQuake, the original Quake 1 multiplayer.

But hey, if you have a favorite Quake there's probably an intense handful of people who still play it occasionally. Every Quake except 4 gets played down here, and the Quake 2 group is always the same few guys who meet months apart.
