Video Game Music

Posted 05-12-2015 at 04:00 PM by Scrabaniac
Hey everyone, i've been very busy this year struggling my way through university, and as a part-time hobby / stress reliever i have been brushing up on my music composing, which i have to say i am still a novice at, but i do enjoy it. I used to write instrumental pop/hip hop tracks for people to lease, which was successful, but i have decided to take a break from that and try my hand at writing Video Game Music, which is harder than it seems. Like general music itself, VGM is hard to please people because not everyone likes the same genre. I've been practising with Nintendo music as it's easier to learn.. And if anyone has ever played the retro Mario Kart games, they might appreciate this.

Being at uni me and my flatmates invested in a Wii U (i know its not the best console) but we got it for the new Mario Kart, Smash Bros and other stuff. And with the dlc Mario Kart has offered, the online community has been going nuts over what old tracks they might use, so i got in the mood of recreating a few old gameboy tracks in the style of the newer generation. I know its not amazing, but if you would like to listen, please follow the links below and let me know what you think

The track i decided to recreate is "Sky Garden" from the Gameboy Advance (Also reused in DS).

I like it.

Im not experienced with composing myself, but Ive enjoyed editing music in the past. One of my fav hobbies in high school was spending hours tweaking some of my favourite VGM's by altering the pitch, tempo etc. to get interesting results.

That's really good! Mario Kart DS is still my favorite.

OCRemix is another good site for retro remixes. I particularly like the Sonic 2/3 remixes. Glad people still care about old videogame music!

OCRemix is cool, but I dont care for alot of what they do. Either I dont care for the music or I never played the games, but theres a couple of their tracks I like.

I definately prefer channels like FamilyJules7x and LittleVMills.

Very nice, soft on the ears, good use of velocity. What program did you use?

Keep hearing about Garageband. Is it any good? Id like to make my own music but I dont have the skills to play actual instruments.

I really like Garageband, the instrument packs it is already loaded with is somewhat average, but if you load plugins, it is a great mixing and editing tool. I don't have a keyboard to attach to the computer, so the track i made above was completely written by arranging marks on a scoresheet.

Sounds like something I can get lost in...

In the good way I mean. Type of thing I can spend 5 minutes in, look up and realise its been 5 hours.

Is it a free program? And what are the restrictions on using stuff u create. Like do you have to pay royalties and shit if you end up using it in a product i.e. a game or movie?

Kontakt and Reaktor, which are the plugins i use are completely free. if you wish to increase your instrument library you can buy extra packs. Garageband came free with my Macbook Pro, so I'm not use if you have to pay for it otherwise.

Not with that attitude... I don't have the skills to design the Empire State Building, but I think that might be because I've never bothered to study architecture.

All it takes is practice! I practiced my music writing using old mario music, and i have finally managed to upload a piece composed completely by myself!
This took a very long time to perfect, and about 10 reuploads to youtube before i was happy with the final product!
