Fired and burnt down

Posted 11-28-2014 at 05:35 AM by Job McYossie
So I got fired from my job for taking 2 consecutive sick days in a row. Normally I work when sick, but I had a bad cough and I worked on the phone all day, so I wouldn't have been usful. I properly sent in messages to my boss each day to say I was sick, but I guess they don't care. I don't know how to feel. I mostly feel depressed though. This is the first time I have ever been fired. Thankfully, I am still a loser that lives in her parents house, so I wont be too worried about money, but it still makes my stomach turn just thinking about it. Normally I don't like talking about depressing things on this blog, but I needed somewhere to rant.

That's bullshit, I'm pretty sure they aren't legally allowed to do that. You'd better look into it.

If they're 'at will' employment they totally can, Nep.

I can empathize and I sympathize 100% Job. Best of luck next time you go job hunting. Relax in the meantime.

Dude that fucking sucks, labour laws are so shitty in America it's just sickening. What's more if you turn up ill to work you risk making other people sick too. You did the right thing, it's a shame your boss is a dick.

@nep
I was legally "working for myself" even though I really wasn't, so legally I can do nothing.

@slog
Thanks, that helps.

@phylum
Surprised Manco let you have that.

I actually got to work on my computer at home, so no one would have gotten sick, but I still wouldn't have been able to talk on the phone.

I could hardly speak at all today due to a throat infection (my voice figuratively wasn't working), and for some reason my managers made me interact with customers even more. Not as bad as America though. I think some bacteria have better lives than you guys.

If you had a set time that you had to be there, and you were using their tools to do the job, you are not legally a sub-contractor.

That's interesting. I did have set times, and used software they told me to use. Don't know if that'd count since they didn't own the free software and it was on my computer.

It counts. If you had to report to the business at a certain time, and work until they told you that you could leave, then you have legal recourse, and could actually force them to pay all of the taxes that they weren't taking out of your check since they were illegally considering you a sub.

It's a trick that a lot of businesses use to get out of paying unemployment insurance, and the six and a half percent social security tax that the business is responsible for when you are an employee.
