Reviewing games

Posted 11-09-2014 at 07:55 PM by Job McYossie
So finally decided to actually do something on youtube that takes more than 15 minutes of work. I started a game review channels, because that area isn't totally over saturated even slightly. But whatever, I've wanted to do this for years and I finally said "that's it, I'm do this now."

Anyway, I thought the video was pretty well paced and put together. I think you could do something more, or different, with the graphic cards that bookend the video. Your voice sounded quite natural but I suppose it was a bit too quiet in places or lacked some confidence. I say try and channel your best OANST next time.

This is actually fucking awesome advice. Whenever I get in-front of a mic to commentate video game tournaments I put a lot of effort into channeling the confidence of commentators I like (example, that isn't my best work by any means). We might only have 15 people on the stream, but those 15 people are listening to every fucking word I say. Be the boss. Take charge. Etc.

That said, talking about things solo is always harder because you don't have anyone else to play off. You have to be totally convincing and force a lot of energy. Recording audio for something like this, especially alone, should be really exhausting. If you want to sound excited, you have to do 10x more work than you'd expect. I'm lucky, because I have a lot of this knowledge from years of musical performances.

The editing was nice, and you have a good sense of pace for this kind of thing. I do agree with Varrok's criticism that the intro is too long, and the same can be said for the ending really. Don't be afraid to cut the standard "like and subscribe" waffle to a splash screen. Maybe do a similar thing for intros, but if in doubt just spend some time watching videos of successful people. Make a list of things you do and don't like, and what you think would fit your "style" best. Engage your best critical mindset, and don't be afraid to do more than just make videos.

Thanks, it's rather hard sometimes to sound in-charge and still work in my feminine voice. I definitely plan on making more than 2 takes of each recording next time though.

Oh yeah, after Varrok said that I thought about it for a few seconds and could easily agree.
