I Had to Kill a Pigeon.

Posted 09-13-2014 at 07:26 AM by STM
That's the first time I've ever intently killed anything bigger than an insect before and I felt absolutely shit for it.

Basically it flew into my brother's closed bedroom window, smacked its head so the flesh/ skull was showing and was standing there dazed. I picked it up wearing gardening gloves and put it down out of the cat's reach then inspected it. It's back and chest were bloody so I think it was diseased or had been got at, there was also blood coming out of its mouth so I psyched myself up, put my hand around its neck and...bent.

Unfortunately my humanity took hold last second and rather than snap it quickly I literally bent it to the side. I held it like that as it flapped around and gagged hoping to choke it out but I figure its windpipe must be too small to choke because it kept breathing. After about what must have been 20-30 seconds I did finally manage to snap its neck and then I gave it a good second twist just for good measure.

Poor thing, I felt awful as it kept staring up at me...needless to say I was rather upset and once it was disposed of I had a bit of a sob.

The one thing I'm taking from this is to research how to quickly and humanely snap a bird's neck because we get them hitting our windows every few months, usually they fly off eventually though. :'(

I made a flash video about a pigeon. Maybe that will make you feel better

yes, at the end all of them flew to the sun and died. I basically murdered them all.

I can sympathize - This situation isn't fun, particularly if you aren't used to it. I hate euthanizing stuff 'cause I'm always worried I'll mess it up and cause further suffering... But perhaps it's kinder than leaving them to die slowly.

This info may be useful to know, particularly for people who intend to keep chickens, but the neck breaking method described there also works on pigeons.

I've recently experienced seeing my aunt's 15-years old dog which I've known for a large part of my life being euthanized. It feels like a part of you dies. I believe it gets less stressful with each death you see. And each one of us will experience (or at least hear about it) the death of some of our family or friends in the end, provided we don't die first, leaving them with the experience. That's sad. I'd rather people do not die.

Death is just a nasty thing in general, but I really don't want to kill anything in particular.

Poor thing. I honestly don't think I could do something like that.

Did the right thing in a terrible situation to be honest. RIP bird.

You make like appreciate this song. It was at least partly inspired by an experience in which she had to kill an injured bird.

I misread this as "I had to kill a Pagan".

I think Shaman possessed me to kill that pigeon so as to summon a demon or something...

I had to do the same after my cat disemboweled one except I sliced its head off with a knife.

Felt terrible afterwards, my vegetarian neighbour then remarked '...and you still eat meat' complimented by several loud tuts. Stupid bitch.

Yes because if you can't pull a bird's head of you can't eat meat at all.

Remind your neighbour that most of her food contains something harvested by a starving third-world wage-slave. Something tells me she wouldn't want to do their job.

I feel your pain. I had to deprive a frog of its life. It was very old and I occasionally put a brick on it with it not having seen anything. It did not even react to being cut alive, though it was evident, that it felt pain.

Thus I swiftly pressed the brick from above against its body to ensure its painless demise and buried it under the ground on which it was dying.

After this I felt as if I perished with this innocent frog and my mind was unraveling.
