I got a brand new PC today, built by Vy! It's awesome!
: D

Sucks for you, though.

I don't really want a new PC, my desktop is stil pretty solid perfomance-wise. But my HDD is probably breaking again, and I neither have money for another one nor patience to install everything again

(I'm running a LIVE Ubuntu from a pendrive, can't even boot to HDD windows anymore)

Comes with owning a computer, unfortunately. This is why you should backup your stuff to either another HD or the cloud regularly. HDs aren't that expensive these days, though.

It's a shitty SEAGATE drive. I'll never buy another one, ever. I managed to backup everything, fortunately

Everything's expensive when you have no income, I'm afraid

Was gonna include this as an edit to my existing post:

You could get a refurbished one if you can find a computer shop (online or off) that'll sell them, they're a bit cheaper - But of course it's luck of the draw, some may have been used, so may be more prone to failure if you're unlucky, while other HDs become more reliable with age. Others may be brand new and unused but have had the packaging opened and sent back to the manufacturer for some reason.

E: Also I had a Seagate Barracuda 100GB that lasted me 8 years. Only stopped using it when I upgraded - But perhaps I was lucky. HD failures aren't fun.

I don't think I'll manage another HDD failure. I had this one repaired* already but after a couple months the same bad things started to happen

*replaced for a new, identical one

If it's two months old, isn't it covered by warranty?

i have a Seagate. i've never had any problems with it. not trying to be dickish, just the truth. you look after it physically, right? ventilation and keeping mobile phones/magnets away from it etc.

what DH said. i think you get at least a 3 or 6 month warranty on most electrical goods by default when you buy it.

You could always build one. That way you know what goes in it and you can manage it a lot better.

And as for HDDs, yeah they break eventually. I have a external one as a backup. Backups are so important to me

If you have enough space to take a disc image, you could burn it to a new HDD. That way you wouldn't have to reinstall everything.

Personally, I've drag'n'dropped most of my system across three seperate Windows installations, and I've never had more than minor problems.

I got it replaced the first time because of warranty. I don't think they extended it so much that I can do that again.

Also, if you had a seagate drive for a long time without any problems, you're very lucky - they're known to be short-lasting (if you don't believe me, try typing "seagate drives suck" in google)

I generally don't mind reinstalling everything provided I don't have to do it too frequently. The last time however, feels not so long ago to me
