Uni lyfe

I started uni on Monday. Bachelor of music in classical performance, specialising on the flute with an additional Classical Performance Extension subject in place of semester 1 theory because my entrance exam was good.
I'm expected to do around 4 hours practice a day. Probably more because of extension. The formal requirement to pass is 24 hours a week, but I'll probably end up doing much more than that. It's basically all of the work I have to do, so I just squeeze it in wherever I can. It's pretty intense, and it's only to get better. Basically, I'm loving it. All of the people I've met so far have been lovely. Very friendly, very welcoming. That's not just other first years, this is everyone. I already know lots of people, and they've introduced me to more and more people. I'm doing terribly with names so far, but I don't think anyone could blame me. I have the teacher that I wanted to get, one of the best teachers in Australia right now. We had our first lesson yesterday, and basically just talked about what we're going to be doing over the year. She wants me to prepare one study each week, and to have started on the next, among scales and my actual repertoire for assessments. I'm not sure what pieces I'm going to learn for my end-of-semester assessments yet, but these are a few of the things that we came up with. I really love this, and might do it for my first assessment in 11 weeks. This is my other option, which sounds really fun but I feel more excited about the other one. I'm fairly sure the guy who is playing this taught my current teacher who in turn taught my last teacher. Flute family trees are fun. Mr Bruderhans taught at the Conservatorium I'm studying at a while ago. I have to learn an extended work (entire sonata or concerto) for extension, so I've been listening to a few other things too. I love this piece, and I think I could probably pull it off over the entire year. This suite is another option. This is just the last movement, but that's where 80% of the technical challenges are. So yeah, on the whole I'm incredibly pumped up about life right now. I'm meeting new people. I'm doing the things I've wanted for years. Now, back to practicing! |
