The Rock from Dystopia.A very old friend of mine- so old that our first childhood meeting is lost in the haze of early neurological development, came to visit today. I hadn't seen him for the past year and a half, since he went to China to teach English. He brought his Chinese fiancée with him. She's pretty clued up about the whole Communist dictatorship thing, and from what I heard from her I have had to cross my fingers that when the time comes she actually gets back here before she is "invited to tea with the police" as the local saying apparently goes. To hear the details first-hand from a native, one who recognises and sees through the propaganda, is truly chilling.
Anyway, she was charming, my friend mysteriously seems to have physically shrunk, and he brought me an unusual gift. Two actually. One is a 1 Yuan bill, worth about ten pence and emblazoned (as is everything else) with the Face of Mao. The other gift is a rock from North Korea. Apparently he hopped across the border to grab it for me, evidently without being shot. I feel very strangely about this rock. It's an unattractive thing that stands out from our combined collection only in that it lack any fossils or other geological distinction. And here I am, holding it, of all my effects probably by a large margin the one least likely to be in my possession. Weird. |
