I'm 14. We've been making these things since 3rd grade and I still have no idea what the hell they're supposed to mean.
And I think they added colors to distract from the fact they're so damn UGLY.

Actually, I think what Laser said merely proves how fucked up his school system is and how much more competent yours is by comparison. With the possible exception that they've failed to teach you what the plots actually mean.

But at least you've heard of them.

I found box and whisker plots to be quite handy simplifications of large data sets. They’re very simple to devise, construct, and interpret, and are especially handy when you don’t want lots and lots of overlying curves, which impede their own clarity through clutter.

That said, in several years of doing casual non‐academic statistics I’ve never found a use for them, nor have I encountered them in any school work above GCSEs (and that includes Statistics 1 at A-Level, but not Statistics 2).

To conclude, they are easy and simple. The real problem with that graph is that it is very poorly labelled, providing no context or self‐explanation. Assuming (wrongly, given the title of the graph) that it’s a measure of the texture of different commercial apricot breeds, I would be tempted to grow specimen 456 because it has the narrowest range of textures, therefore offering the greatest efficiency in providing fruits of the quality expected by the sellers I supply.

I hate apricots in meals. They are a food for desserts, not mains!
